perf probe: Provide clearer message permission error for tracefs access Report permission error for the tracefs open and rewrite whole the error message code around it. You'll see a hint according to what you want to do with perf probe as below. $ perf probe -l No permission to read tracefs. Please try 'sudo mount -o remount,mode=755 /sys/kernel/tracing/' Error: Failed to show event list. $ perf probe -d \* No permission to write tracefs. Please run this command again with sudo. Error: Failed to delete events. This also fixes -ENOTSUP checking for mounting tracefs/debugfs. Actually open returns -ENOENT in that case and we have to check it with current mount point list. perf probe: Fixup Arm64 SDT arguments Arm64 ELF section '.note.stapsdt' uses string format "-4@[sp, NUM]" if the probe is to access data in stack, e.g. below is an example for dumping Arm64 ELF file and shows the argument format: Arguments: -4@[sp, 12] -4@[sp, 8] -4@[sp, 4] Comparing against other archs' argument format, Arm64's argument introduces an extra space character in the middle of square brackets, due to argv_split() uses space as splitter, the argument is wrongly divided into two items. To support Arm64 SDT, this patch fixes up for this case, if any item contains sub string "[sp", concatenates the two continuous items. And adds the detailed explaination in comment. perf-probe: Add user memory access attribute support Add user memory access attribute for kprobe event arguments. If a given 'local variable' is in user-space, User can specify memory access method by '@user' suffix. This is not only for string but also for data structure. If we access a field of data structure in user memory from kernel on some arch, it will fail. e.g. perf probe -a "sched_setscheduler param->sched_priority" This will fail to access the "param->sched_priority" because the param is __user pointer. Instead, we can now specify @user suffix for such argument. perf probe -a "sched_setscheduler param->sched_priority@user" Note that kernel memory access with "@user" must always fail on any arch. perf probe: Fix unchecked usage of strncpy() The strncpy() function may leave the destination string buffer unterminated, better use strlcpy() that we have a __weak fallback implementation for systems without it. tools: Introduce str_error_r() The tools so far have been using the strerror_r() GNU variant, that returns a string, be it the buffer passed or something else. But that, besides being tricky in cases where we expect that the function using strerror_r() returns the error formatted in a provided buffer (we have to check if it returned something else and copy that instead), breaks the build on systems not using glibc, like Alpine Linux, where musl libc is used. So, introduce yet another wrapper, str_error_r(), that has the GNU interface, but uses the portable XSI variant of strerror_r(), so that users rest asured that the provided buffer is used and it is what is returned. perf buildid-cache: Scan and import user SDT events to probe cache perf buildid-cache --add <binary> scans given binary and add the SDT events to probe cache. "sdt_" prefix is appended for all SDT providers to avoid event-name clash with other pre-defined events. It is possible to use the cached SDT events as other cached events, via perf probe --add "sdt_<provider>:<event>=<event>". e.g. ---- # perf buildid-cache --add /lib/libc-2.17.so # perf probe --cache --list | head -n 5 /usr/lib/libc-2.17.so (a6fb821bdf53660eb2c29f778757aef294d3d392): sdt_libc:setjmp=setjmp sdt_libc:longjmp=longjmp sdt_libc:longjmp_target=longjmp_target sdt_libc:memory_heap_new=memory_heap_new # perf probe -x /usr/lib/libc-2.17.so \ -a sdt_libc:memory_heap_new=memory_heap_new Added new event: sdt_libc:memory_heap_new (on memory_heap_new in /usr/lib/libc-2.17.so) You can now use it in all perf tools, such as: perf record -e sdt_libc:memory_heap_new -aR sleep 1 # perf probe -l sdt_libc:memory_heap_new (on new_heap+183 in /usr/lib/libc-2.17.so) ---- Note that SDT event entries in probe-cache file is somewhat different from normal cached events. perf probe: Remove caches when --cache is given 'perf probe --del' removes caches when '--cache' is given. Note that the delete pattern is not the same as for normal events. If you cached probes with event name, --del "eventname" works as expected. However, if you skipped it, the cached probes doesn't have actual event name. In that case --del "probe-desc" is required (wildcard is acceptable). For example a cache entry has the probe-desc "vfs_read $params", you can remove it with --del 'vfs_read*'. ----- # perf probe --cache --list /[kernel.kallsyms] (1466a0a250b5d0070c6d0f03c5fed30b237970a1): vfs_read $params /usr/lib64/libc-2.17.so (c31ffe7942bfd77b2fca8f9bd5709d387a86d3bc): getaddrinfo $params # perf probe --cache --del vfs_read\* Removed cached event: probe:vfs_read # perf probe --cache --list /[kernel.kallsyms] (1466a0a250b5d0070c6d0f03c5fed30b237970a1): /usr/lib64/libc-2.17.so (c31ffe7942bfd77b2fca8f9bd5709d387a86d3bc): getaddrinfo $params ----- Signed-off-by: Masami Hiramatsu <mhiramat@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Masami Hiramatsu <masami.hiramatsu.pt@hitachi.com> Tested-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com> Cc: Ananth N Mavinakayanahalli <ananth@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Cc: Brendan Gregg <brendan.d.gregg@gmail.com> Cc: Hemant Kumar <hemant@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Cc: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/146736021651.27797.10250879847070772920.stgit@devbox Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

perf probe: Verify parameters in two functions On kernel with only one out of CONFIG_KPROBE_EVENTS and CONFIG_UPROBE_EVENTS enabled, 'perf probe -d' causes a segfault because perf_del_probe_events() calls probe_file__get_events() with a negative fd. This patch fixes it by adding parameter validation at the entry of probe_file__get_events() and probe_file__get_rawlist(). Since they are both non-static public functions (in .h file), parameter verifying is required. v1 -> v2: Verify fd at the head of probe_file__get_rawlist() instead of checking at call site (suggested by Masami and Arnaldo at [1,2]).
