perf build: Use libtraceevent from the system Remove the LIBTRACEEVENT_DYNAMIC and LIBTRACEFS_DYNAMIC make command line variables. If libtraceevent isn't installed or NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 is passed to the build, don't compile in libtraceevent and libtracefs support. This also disables CONFIG_TRACE that controls "perf trace". CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT is used to control enablement in Build/Makefiles, HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is used in C code. Without HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT tracepoints are disabled and as such the commands kmem, kwork, lock, sched and timechart are removed. The majority of commands continue to work including "perf test". Committer notes: Fixed up a tools/perf/util/Build reject and added: #include <traceevent/event-parse.h> to tools/perf/util/scripting-engines/trace-event-perl.c. Building with NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 uncovered some more build failures: - Make building of data-convert-bt.c to CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y - perf-$(CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT) += scripts/ - bpf_kwork.o needs also to be dependent on CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y - The python binding needed some fixups and util/trace-event.c can't be built and linked with the python binding shared object, so remove it in tools/perf/util/setup.py and exclude it from the list of dependencies in the python/perf.so Makefile.perf target. Building without libtraceevent-devel installed uncovered more build failures: - The python binding tools/perf/util/python.c was assuming that traceevent/parse-events.h was always available, which was the case when we defaulted to using the in-kernel tools/lib/traceevent/ files, now we need to enclose it under ifdef HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT, just like the other parts of it that deal with tracepoints. - We have to ifdef the rules in the Build files with CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y to build builtin-trace.c and tools/perf/trace/beauty/ as we only ifdef setting CONFIG_TRACE=y when setting NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 in the make command line, not when we don't detect libtraceevent-devel installed in the system. Simplification here to avoid these two ways of disabling builtin-trace.c and not having CONFIG_TRACE=y when libtraceevent-devel isn't installed is the clean way. From Athira: <quote> tools/perf/arch/powerpc/util/Build -perf-y += kvm-stat.o +perf-$(CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT) += kvm-stat.o </quote> Then, ditto for arm64 and s390, detected by container cross build tests. - s/390 uses test__checkevent_tracepoint() that is now only available if HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is defined, enclose the callsite with ifder HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT. Also from Athira: <quote> With this change, I could successfully compile in these environment: - Without libtraceevent-devel installed - With libtraceevent-devel installed - With “make NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1” </quote> Then, finally rename CONFIG_TRACEEVENT to CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT for consistency with other libraries detected in tools/perf/. perf data: Add JSON export This adds a feature to export perf data to JSON. The resolved symbols are exported into the JSON so that external tools don't need to load the dsos themselves (or even have access to them at all.) This makes it easy to load and analyze perf data with standalone tools where direct perf or libbabeltrace integration is impractical. The exporter uses a minimal inline JSON encoding without any external dependencies. Currently it only outputs some headers and sample metadata but it's easily extensible. Use it like this: $ perf data convert --to-json out.json Committer notes: Fixup a __printf() bug that broke the build: util/data-convert-json.c:103:11: error: expected ‘)’ before numeric constant 103 | __(printf, 5, 6) | ^~ | ) util/data-convert-json.c: In function ‘output_sample_callchain_entry’: util/data-convert-json.c:124:2: error: implicit declaration of function ‘output_json_key_format’; did you mean ‘output_json_format’? tools perf: Move from sane_ctype.h obtained from git to the Linux's original We got the sane_ctype.h headers from git and kept using it so far, but since that code originally came from the kernel sources to the git sources, perhaps its better to just use the one in the kernel, so that we can leverage tools/perf/check_headers.sh to be notified when our copy gets out of sync, i.e. when fixes or goodies are added to the code we've copied. This will help with things like tools/lib/string.c where we want to have more things in common with the kernel, such as strim(), skip_spaces(), etc so as to go on removing the things that we have in tools/perf/util/ and instead using the code in the kernel, indirectly and removing things like EXPORT_SYMBOL(), etc, getting notified when fixes and improvements are made to the original code. Hopefully this also should help with reducing the difference of code hosted in tools/ to the one in the kernel proper. perf data: Explicitly set byte order for integer types After babeltrace commit 5cec03e402aa ("ir: copy variants and sequences when setting a field path"), 'perf data convert' gets incorrect result if there's bpf output data. For example: # perf data convert --to-ctf ./out.ctf # babeltrace ./out.ctf [10:44:31.186045346] (+?.?????????) evt: { cpu_id = 0 }, { perf_ip = 0xFFFFFFFF810E7DD1, perf_tid = 23819, perf_pid = 23819, perf_id = 518, raw_len = 3, raw_data = [ [0] = 0xC028E32F, [1] = 0x815D0100, [2] = 0x1000000 ] } [10:44:31.286101003] (+0.100055657) evt: { cpu_id = 0 }, { perf_ip = 0xFFFFFFFF8105B609, perf_tid = 23819, perf_pid = 23819, perf_id = 518, raw_len = 3, raw_data = [ [0] = 0x35D9F1EB, [1] = 0x15D81, [2] = 0x2 ] } The expected result of the first sample should be: raw_data = [ [0] = 0x2FE328C0, [1] = 0x15D81, [2] = 0x1 ] } however, 'perf data convert' output big endian value to resuling CTF file. The reason is a internal change (or a bug?) of babeltrace. Before this patch, at the first add_bpf_output_values(), byte order of all integer type is uncertain (is 0, neither 1234 (le) nor 4321 (be)). It would be fixed by: perf_evlist__deliver_sample -> process_sample_event -> ctf_stream ... ->bt_ctf_trace_add_stream_class ->bt_ctf_field_type_structure_set_byte_order ->bt_ctf_field_type_integer_set_byte_order during creating the stream. However, the babeltrace commit mentioned above duplicates types in sequence to prevent potential conflict in following call stack and link the newly allocated type into the 'raw_data' sequence: perf_evlist__deliver_sample -> process_sample_event -> ctf_stream ... -> bt_ctf_trace_add_stream_class -> bt_ctf_stream_class_resolve_types ... -> bt_ctf_field_type_sequence_copy ->bt_ctf_field_type_integer_copy This happens before byte order setting, so only the newly allocated type is initialized, the byte order of original type perf choose to create the first raw_data is still uncertain. Byte order in CTF output is not related to byte order in perf.data. Setting it to anything other than BT_CTF_BYTE_ORDER_NATIVE solves this problem (only BT_CTF_BYTE_ORDER_NATIVE needs to be fixed). To reduce behavior changing, set byte order according to compiling options. perf config: Bring perf_default_config to the very beginning at main() Before this patch each subcommand calls perf_config() by themself, reading the default configuration together with subcommand specific options. If a subcommand doesn't have it own options, it needs to call 'perf_config(perf_default_config, NULL)' to ensure .perfconfig is loaded. This patch brings perf_config(perf_default_config, NULL) to the very start of main(), so subcommands don't need to do it. After this patch, 'llvm.clang-path' works for 'perf trace'. perf data: Fix releasing event_class A new patch in libbabeltrace [1] reveals a object leak problem in 'perf data' CTF support: perf code never releases the event_class which is allocated in add_event() and stored in evsel's private field. If libbabeltrace has the above patch applied, leaking event_class prevents the writer from being destroyed and flushing metadata. For example: $ perf record ls perf.data [ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ] [ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.012 MB perf.data (12 samples) ] $ perf data convert --to-ctf ./out.ctf [ perf data convert: Converted 'perf.data' into CTF data './out.ctf' ] [ perf data convert: Converted and wrote 0.000 MB (12 samples) ] $ cat ./out.ctf/metadata $ ls -l ./out.ctf/metadata -rw-r----- 1 w00229757 mm 0 Jan 27 10:49 ./out.ctf/metadata The correct result should be: ... $ cat ./out.ctf/metadata /* CTF 1.8 */ trace { [SNIP] $ ls -l ./out.ctf/metadata -rw-r----- 1 w00229757 mm 2446 Jan 27 10:52 ./out.ctf/metadata The full story is: Patch [1] of babeltrace redesigns its reference counting scheme. In that patch: * writer <- trace (bt_ctf_writer_create) * trace <- stream_class (bt_ctf_trace_add_stream_class) * stream_class <- event_class (bt_ctf_stream_class_add_event_class) ('<-' means 'is a parent of') Holding of event_class causes reference count of corresponding 'writer' to increase through parent chain. Perf expects that 'writer' is released (so metadata is flushed) through bt_ctf_writer_put() in ctf_writer__cleanup(). However, since it never releases event_class, the reference of 'writer' won't be dropped, so bt_ctf_writer_put() won't lead to the release of writer. Before this CTF patch, !(writer <- trace). Even with event_class leaking, the writer ends up being released. perf data: Fix signedness of value When converting int values, perf first extractes it to a ulonglong, then feeds it to babeltrace as a signed value. For negative 32 bit values (for example, return values of failed syscalls), the extracted data should be something like 0xfffffffe (-2). It becomes a large int64 value. Babeltrace denies to insert it with bt_ctf_field_signed_integer_set_value() because it is larger than 0x7fffffff, the largest positive value a 32 bit int can be. This patch introduces adjust_signedness(), which fills high bits of ulonglong with 1 if the value is negative. perf data: Fix duplicate field names and avoid reserved keywords Some parameters of syscall tracepoints named as 'nr', 'event', etc. When dealing with them, perf convert to ctf meets some problem: 1. If a parameter with name 'nr', it will duplicate syscall's common field 'nr'. One such syscall is io_submit(). 2. If a parameter with name 'event', it is denied to be inserted because 'event' is a CTF spec keyword[1]. One such syscall is epoll_ctl. This patch appends '_dupl_X' suffix to avoid problem 1, prepend a '_' prefix to avoid problem 2. perf data: Switch to multiple cpu stream files Currently we store the data into single data strea/file. The cpu if data is stored within the event sample. The lttng puts the CPU number that belongs to the event into the packet context instead into the event. This patch makes sure that the trace produce by perf does look the same way. We now use one stream per-CPU. Having it all in one stream increased the total size of the resulting file. The test went from 416KiB (with perf_cpu event member) to 24MiB due to the required (and pointless) flush. With the per-cpu streams the total size went up to 588KiB. The converted CTF data could be analyzed by CTF tools, like babletrace or tracecompass [1]. $ babeltrace ./ctf-data/ [03:19:13.962125533] (+?.?????????) cycles: { }, { ip = 0xFFFFFFFF8105443A, tid = 20714, pid = 20714, period = 1 } [03:19:13.962130001] (+0.000004468) cycles: { }, { ip = 0xFFFFFFFF8105443A, tid = 20714, pid = 20714, period = 1 } [03:19:13.962131936] (+0.000001935) cycles: { }, { ip = 0xFFFFFFFF8105443A, tid = 20714, pid = 20714, period = 8 } [03:19:13.962133732] (+0.000001796) cycles: { }, { ip = 0xFFFFFFFF8105443A, tid = 20714, pid = 20714, period = 114 } [03:19:13.962135557] (+0.000001825) cycles: { }, { ip = 0xFFFFFFFF8105443A, tid = 20714, pid = 20714, period = 2087 } [03:19:13.962137627] (+0.000002070) cycles: { }, { ip = 0xFFFFFFFF81361938, tid = 20714, pid = 20714, period = 37582 } [03:19:13.962161091] (+0.000023464) cycles: { }, { ip = 0xFFFFFFFF8124218F, tid = 20714, pid = 20714, period = 600246 } [03:19:13.962517569] (+0.000356478) cycles: { }, { ip = 0xFFFFFFFF811A75DB, tid = 20714, pid = 20714, period = 1325731 } [03:19:13.969518008] (+0.007000439) cycles: { }, { ip = 0x34080917B2, tid = 20714, pid = 20714, period = 1144298 } The following members to the ctf-environment were decided to be added to distinguish and specify perf CTF data: - domain It says "kernel" because it contains a kernel trace (not to be confused with a user space like lttng-ust does) - tracer_name It says perf. This can be used to distinguish between lttng and perf CTF based trace. - version The kernel version from stream.
