perf stat: Support per-cluster aggregation Some platforms have 'cluster' topology and CPUs in the cluster will share resources like L3 Cache Tag (for HiSilicon Kunpeng SoC) or L2 cache (for Intel Jacobsville). Currently parsing and building cluster topology have been supported since [1]. perf stat has already supported aggregation for other topologies like die or socket, etc. It'll be useful to aggregate per-cluster to find problems like L3T bandwidth contention. This patch add support for "--per-cluster" option for per-cluster aggregation. Also update the docs and related test. The output will be like: [root@localhost tmp]# perf stat -a -e LLC-load --per-cluster -- sleep 5 Performance counter stats for 'system wide': S56-D0-CLS158 4 1,321,521,570 LLC-load S56-D0-CLS594 4 794,211,453 LLC-load S56-D0-CLS1030 4 41,623 LLC-load S56-D0-CLS1466 4 41,646 LLC-load S56-D0-CLS1902 4 16,863 LLC-load S56-D0-CLS2338 4 15,721 LLC-load S56-D0-CLS2774 4 22,671 LLC-load [...] On a legacy system without cluster or cluster support, the output will be look like: [root@localhost perf]# perf stat -a -e cycles --per-cluster -- sleep 1 Performance counter stats for 'system wide': S56-D0-CLS0 64 18,011,485 cycles S7182-D0-CLS0 64 16,548,835 cycles Note that this patch doesn't mix the cluster information in the outputs of --per-core to avoid breaking any tools/scripts using it. Note that perf recently supports "--per-cache" aggregation, but it's not the same with the cluster although cluster CPUs may share some cache resources. For example on my machine all clusters within a die share the same L3 cache: $ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cache/index3/shared_cpu_list 0-31 $ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/topology/cluster_cpus_list 0-3 [1] commit c5e22feffdd7 ("topology: Represent clusters of CPUs within a die") Tested-by: Jie Zhan <zhanjie9@hisilicon.com> Reviewed-by: Tim Chen <tim.c.chen@linux.intel.com> Reviewed-by: Ian Rogers <irogers@google.com> Signed-off-by: Yicong Yang <yangyicong@hisilicon.com> Cc: james.clark@arm.com Cc: 21cnbao@gmail.com Cc: prime.zeng@hisilicon.com Cc: Jonathan.Cameron@huawei.com Cc: fanghao11@huawei.com Cc: linuxarm@huawei.com Cc: tim.c.chen@intel.com Cc: linux-arm-kernel@lists.infradead.org Signed-off-by: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20240208024026.2691-1-yangyicong@huawei.com

perf stat: Setup the foundation to allow aggregation based on cache topology Processors based on chiplet architecture, such as AMD EPYC and Hygon do not expose the chiplet details in the sysfs CPU topology information. However, this information can be derived from the per CPU cache level information from the sysfs. 'perf stat' has already supported aggregation based on topology information using core ID, socket ID, etc. It'll be useful to aggregate based on the cache topology to detect problems like imbalance and cache-to-cache sharing at various cache levels. This patch lays the foundation for aggregating data in 'perf stat' based on the processor's cache topology. The cmdline option to aggregate data based on the cache topology is added in Patch 4 of the series while this patch sets up all the necessary functions and variables required to support the new aggregation option. The patch also adds support to display per-cache aggregation, or save it as a JSON or CSV, as splitting it into a separate patch would break builds when compiling with "-Werror=switch-enum" where the compiler will complain about the lack of handling for the AGGR_CACHE case in the output functions. Committer notes: Don't use perf_stat_config in tools/perf/util/cpumap.c, this would make code that is in util/, thus not really specific to a single builtin, use a specific builtin config structure. Move the functions introduced in this patch from tools/perf/util/cpumap.c since it needs access to builtin specific and is not strictly needed to live in the util/ directory. With this 'perf test python' is back building. perf cpumap: Fix alignment for masks in event encoding A mask encoding of a cpu map is laid out as: u16 nr u16 long_size unsigned long mask[]; However, the mask may be 8-byte aligned meaning there is a 4-byte pad after long_size. This means 32-bit and 64-bit builds see the mask as being at different offsets. On top of this the structure is in the byte data[] encoded as: u16 type char data[] This means the mask's struct isn't the required 4 or 8 byte aligned, but is offset by 2. Consequently the long reads and writes are causing undefined behavior as the alignment is broken. Fix the mask struct by creating explicit 32 and 64-bit variants, use a union to avoid data[] and casts; the struct must be packed so the layout matches the existing perf.data layout. Taking an address of a member of a packed struct breaks alignment so pass the packed perf_record_cpu_map_data to functions, so they can access variables with the right alignment. As the 64-bit version has 4 bytes of padding, optimizing writing to only write the 32-bit version. Committer notes: Disable warnings about 'packed' that break the build in some arches like riscv64, but just around that specific struct. perf stat aggregation: Add separate socket member Add socket as a separate member so that it doesn't have to be packed into the int value. When the socket ID was larger than 8 bits the output appeared corrupted or incomplete. For example, here on ThunderX2 'perf stat' reports a socket of -1 and an invalid die number: ./perf stat -a --per-die The socket id number is too big. Performance counter stats for 'system wide': S-1-D255 128 687.99 msec cpu-clock # 57.240 CPUs utilized ... S36-D0 128 842.34 msec cpu-clock # 70.081 CPUs utilized ... And with --per-core there is an entry with an invalid core ID: ./perf stat record -a --per-core The socket id number is too big. Performance counter stats for 'system wide': S-1-D255-C65535 128 671.04 msec cpu-clock # 54.112 CPUs utilized ... S36-D0-C0 4 28.27 msec cpu-clock # 2.279 CPUs utilized ... This fixes the "Session topology" self test on ThunderX2. After this fix the output contains the correct socket and die IDs and no longer prints a warning about the size of the socket ID: ./perf stat --per-die -a Performance counter stats for 'system wide': S36-D0 128 169,869.39 msec cpu-clock # 127.501 CPUs utilized ... perf stat: Support per-die aggregation It is useful to aggregate counts per die. E.g. Uncore becomes die-scope on Xeon Cascade Lake-AP. Introduce a new option "--per-die" to support per-die aggregation. The global id for each core has been changed to socket + die id + core id. The global id for each die is socket + die id. Add die information for per-core aggregation. The output of per-core aggregation will be changed from "S0-C0" to "S0-D0-C0". Any scripts which rely on the output format of per-core aggregation probably be broken. For 'perf stat record/report', there is no die information when processing the old perf.data. The per-die result will be the same as per-socket. License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. perf stat: Add per-core aggregation This patch adds the --per-core option to perf stat. This option is used to aggregate system-wide counts on a per physical core basis. On processors with hyperthreading, this means counts of all HT threads running on a physical core are aggregated. This mode is useful to find imblance between physical cores running an uniform workload. Cores are identified by socket: S0-C1, means physical core 1 on socket 0. Note that cores are identified using their physical core id, thus their numbering may not be continuous. Per core aggregation can be combined with interval printing: # perf stat -a --per-core -I 1000 -e cycles sleep 1000 # time core cpus counts events 1.000090030 S0-C0 1 4,765,747 cycles 1.000090030 S0-C1 1 5,580,647 cycles 1.000090030 S0-C2 1 221,181 cycles 1.000090030 S0-C3 1 266,092 cycles Signed-off-by: Stephane Eranian <eranian@google.com> Cc: Andi Kleen <ak@linux.intel.com> Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu> Cc: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@redhat.com> Cc: Namhyung Kim <namhyung.kim@lge.com> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1360846649-6411-4-git-send-email-eranian@google.com [ committer note: Remove parts already applied on 86ee6e1 to keep bisectability ] Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

perf tools: Fix sparse CPU numbering related bugs At present, the perf subcommands that do system-wide monitoring (perf stat, perf record and perf top) don't work properly unless the online cpus are numbered 0, 1, ..., N-1. These tools ask for the number of online cpus with sysconf(_SC_NPROCESSORS_ONLN) and then try to create events for cpus 0, 1, ..., N-1. This creates problems for systems where the online cpus are numbered sparsely. For example, a POWER6 system in single-threaded mode (i.e. only running 1 hardware thread per core) will have only even-numbered cpus online. This fixes the problem by reading the /sys/devices/system/cpu/online file to find out which cpus are online. The code that does that is in tools/perf/util/cpumap.[ch], and consists of a read_cpu_map() function that sets up a cpumap[] array and returns the number of online cpus. If /sys/devices/system/cpu/online can't be read or can't be parsed successfully, it falls back to using sysconf to ask how many cpus are online and sets up an identity map in cpumap[]. The perf record, perf stat and perf top code then calls read_cpu_map() in the system-wide monitoring case (instead of sysconf) and uses cpumap[] to get the cpu numbers to pass to perf_event_open.
