perf addr_location: Add init/exit/copy functions struct addr_location holds references to multiple reference counted objects. Add init/exit functions to make maintenance of those more consistent with the rest of the code and to try to avoid leaks. Modification of thread reference counts isn't included in this change. Committer notes: I needed to initialize result to sample->ip to make sure is set to something, fixing a compile time error, mostly keeping the previous logic as build_alloc_func_list() already does debugging/error prints about what went wrong if it takes the 'goto out'. perf map: Add accessor for dso Later changes will add reference count checking for struct map, with dso being the most frequently accessed variable. Add an accessor so that the reference count check is only necessary in one place. Additional changes: - add a dso variable to avoid repeated map__dso calls. - in builtin-mem.c dump_raw_samples, code only partially tested for dso == NULL. Make the possibility of NULL consistent. - in thread.c thread__memcpy fix use of spaces and use tabs. Also adds file to this folder under build id. The code path and function (build_id_cache__add to add a file to the cache is in "util/build-id.c". In build_id_cache__add() function, it first attempts to link the original file to destination cache folder. If linking the file fails (which can happen if the destination and source is on a different mount points), it will copy the file to destination. Here copyfile() routine explicitly uses mode as "755" and hence file in the destination will have executable permission. Since the testcase "tests/shell/buildid.sh" always looks for executable file, test fails in powerpc environment when test is run from /root. The patch adds a change in build_id_cache__add() to use copyfile_mode() which also passes the file’s original mode as argument. This way the destination file mode also will be same as original file. perf buildid-cache: Add guestmount'd files to the build ID cache When the guestmount option is used, a guest machine's file system mount point is recorded in machine->root_dir. perf already iterates guest machines when adding files to the build ID cache, but does not take machine->root_dir into account. Use machine->root_dir to find files for guest build IDs, and add them to the build ID cache using the "proper" name i.e. relative to the guest root directory not the host root directory. perf build-id: Fix caching files with a wrong build ID Build ID events associate a file name with a build ID. However, when using perf inject, there is no guarantee that the file on the current machine at the current time has that build ID. Fix by comparing the build IDs and skip adding to the cache if they are different. perf buildid-cache: Don't skip 16-byte build-ids lsdir_bid_tail_filter() ignored any build-id that wasn't exactly 20 bytes. This worked only for SHA-1 build-ids. The build-id for a PE file is always a 16-byte GUID and ELF files can also have MD5 or UUID build-ids. This fix changes the filter to allow build-ids between 16 and 20 bytes. perf symbols: Try to load vmlinux from buildid database Currently we don't check on kernel's vmlinux the same way as we do for normal binaries, but we either look for kallsyms file in build id database or check on known vmlinux locations (plus some other optional paths). This patch adds the check for standard build id binary location, so we are ready once we start to store it there from debuginfod in following changes. tools perf: Move from sane_ctype.h obtained from git to the Linux's original We got the sane_ctype.h headers from git and kept using it so far, but since that code originally came from the kernel sources to the git sources, perhaps its better to just use the one in the kernel, so that we can leverage tools/perf/check_headers.sh to be notified when our copy gets out of sync, i.e. when fixes or goodies are added to the code we've copied. This will help with things like tools/lib/string.c where we want to have more things in common with the kernel, such as strim(), skip_spaces(), etc so as to go on removing the things that we have in tools/perf/util/ and instead using the code in the kernel, indirectly and removing things like EXPORT_SYMBOL(), etc, getting notified when fixes and improvements are made to the original code. Hopefully this also should help with reducing the difference of code hosted in tools/ to the one in the kernel proper. perf machine: Use cached rbtrees At the cost of an extra pointer, we can avoid the O(logN) cost of finding the first element in the tree (smallest node), which is something required for nearly every operation dealing with machine->guests and threads->entries. The conversion is straightforward, however, it's worth noticing that the rb_erase_init() calls have been replaced by rb_erase_cached() which has no _init() flavor, however, the node is explicitly cleared next anyway, which was redundant until now. perf thread: Introduce thread__find_map() Out of thread__find_add_map(..., MAP__FUNCTION, ...), idea here is to continue removing references to MAP__{FUNCTION,VARIABLE} ahead of getting both types of symbols in the same rbtree, as various places do two lookups, looking first at MAP__FUNCTION, then at MAP__VARIABLE. So thread__find_map() will eventually do just that, and 'struct symbol' will have the symbol type, for code that cares about that. License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. perf buildid-cache: Cache debuginfo If a stripped binary is placed in the cache, the user is in a situation where there's a cached elf file present, but it doesn't have any symtab to use for name resolution. perf symbols: Kill dso__build_id_is_kmod() The commit e7ee40475760 ("perf symbols: Fix symbols searching for module in buildid-cache") added the function to check kernel modules reside in the build-id cache. This was because there's no way to identify a DSO which is actually a kernel module. So it searched linkname of the file and find ".ko" suffix. But this does not work for compressed kernel modules and now such DSOs hCcave correct symtab_type now. So no need to check it anymore. This patch essentially reverts the commit. perf tools: Add feature detection for gelf_getnote() That is not present on some libelf implementations, such as the one used in Alpine Linux: libelf-0.8.13. This ends up disabling the SDT code, that relies on this function. One alternative would be to provide an weak fallback implementation or the open coded variant used by the buildid sysfs notes reading code. perf symbols: Store vdso buildid unconditionally When unwinding callchains on a different machine, vdso info should be available so the unwind process won't be interrupted if address falls into vdso region. But in most cases, the addresses of sample events are not in vdso range, the buildid of a zero hit vdso won't be stored into perf.data. This patch stores vdso buildid regardless of whether the vdso is hit or not. In dso__load(), kmod is true only when its file is found in some well know directories. All files loaded from buildid-cache are treated as user programs. Following dso__load_sym() set map->pgoff incorrectly. This patch gives kernel modules in buildid-cache a chance to adjust value of kmod. After dso__load() get the type of symbols, if it is buildid, check the last 3 chars of original filename against '.ko', and adjust the value of kmod if the file is a kernel module. perf buildid: Fix cpumode of buildid event There is a nasty confusion that, for kernel module, dso->kernel is not necessary to be DSO_TYPE_KERNEL or DSO_TYPE_GUEST_KERNEL. These two enums are for vmlinux. See thread [1]. We tried to fix this part but it is costy. Code machine__write_buildid_table() is another unfortunate function fall into this trap that, when issuing buildid event for a kernel module, cpumode it gives to the event is PERF_RECORD_MISC_USER, not PERF_RECORD_MISC_KERNEL. However, even with this bug, most of the time it doesn't causes real problem. I find this issue when trying to use a perf before commit 3d39ac538629 ("perf machine: No need to have two DSOs lists") to parse a perf.data generated by newest perf. perf buildid-list: Requires ordered events 'perf buildid-list' processes events to determine hits (i.e. with-hits option). That may not work if events are not sorted in order. i.e. MMAP events must be processed before the samples that depend on them so that sample processing can 'hit' the DSO to which the MMAP refers. perf machine: Protect the machine->threads with a rwlock In addition to using refcounts for the struct thread lifetime management, we need to protect access to machine->threads from concurrent access. That happens in 'perf top', where a thread processes events, inserting and deleting entries from that rb_tree while another thread decays hist_entries, that end up dropping references and ultimately deleting threads from the rb_tree and releasing its resources when no further hist_entry (or other data structures, like in 'perf sched') references it. So the rule is the same for refcounts + protected trees in the kernel, get the tree lock, find object, bump the refcount, drop the tree lock, return, use object, drop the refcount if no more use of it is needed, keep it if storing it in some other data structure, drop when releasing that data structure. I.e. pair "t = machine__find(new)_thread()" with a "thread__put(t)", and "perf_event__preprocess_sample(&al)" with "addr_location__put(&al)". The addr_location__put() one is because as we return references to several data structures, we may end up adding more reference counting for the other data structures and then we'll drop it at addr_location__put() time. perf buildid-list: Fix segfault when show DSOs with hits commit: f3b623b8490a ("perf tools: Reference count struct thread") appends every thread->node to dead_threads in machine__remove_thread() and list_del_init() this node in thread__put(). perf_event__exit_del_thread() releases thread wihout using machine__remove_thread(), and causes a NULL pointer crash when list_del_init(&thread->node) is called. Fix this by using machine_remove_thread() instead of using thread__put() directly. perf tools: Reference count struct thread We need to do that to stop accumulating entries in the dead_threads linked list, i.e. we were keeping references to threads in struct hists that continue to exist even after a thread exited and was removed from the machine threads rbtree. We still keep the dead_threads list, but just for debugging, allowing us to iterate at any given point over the threads that still are referenced by things like struct hist_entry. perf tools: Use tid for finding thread I believe that passing pid (instead of tid) as the 3rd arg of the machine__find*_thread() was to find a main thread so that it can search proper map group for symbols. However with the map sharing patch applied, it now can do it in any thread. It fixes a bug when each thread has different name, it only reports a main thread for samples in other threads. perf symbols: Load kernel maps before using In order to use kernel maps to read object code, those maps must be adjusted to map to the dso file offset. Because lazy-initialization is used, that is not done until symbols are loaded. However the maps are first used by thread__find_addr_map() before symbols are loaded. So this patch changes thread__find_addr() to "load" kernel maps before using them. perf event: No need to create a thread when handling PERF_RECORD_EXIT When we were processing a PERF_RECORD_EXIT event we first used machine__findnew_thread for both the thread exiting and for its parent, only to use just the thread struct associated with the one exiting, and to just delete it. If it existed, i.e. not created at this very moment in machine__findnew_thread, it will be moved to the machine->dead_threads linked list, because we may have hist_entries pointing to it, but if it was created just do be deleted, it will just sit there with no references at all. Use the new machine__find_thread() method so that if it is not there, we don't create it. As a bonus the parent thread will also not be created at this point. Create process_fork() and process_exit() helpers to use this and make the builtins use it instead of the generic process_task(), ditched by this patch. perf tools: Use __maybe_used for unused variables perf defines both __used and __unused variables to use for marking unused variables. The variable __used is defined to __attribute__((__unused__)), which contradicts the kernel definition to __attribute__((__used__)) for new gcc versions. On Android, __used is also defined in system headers and this leads to warnings like: warning: '__used__' attribute ignored __unused is not defined in the kernel and is not a standard definition. If __unused is included everywhere instead of __used, this leads to conflicts with glibc headers, since glibc has a variables with this name in its headers. The best approach is to use __maybe_unused, the definition used in the kernel for __attribute__((unused)). In this way there is only one definition in perf sources (instead of 2 definitions that point to the same thing: __used and __unused) and it works on both Linux and Android. This patch simply replaces all instances of __used and __unused with __maybe_unused. perf buildid-list: Work better with pipe mode In order for perf buildid-list to work with pipe-mode files, it needs to process buildids and event attr structs. $ perf record -o - noploop 2 | ./perf inject -b | perf buildid-list -i - -H noploop for 2 seconds [ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ] [ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.084 MB - (~3678 samples) ] 0000000000000000000000000000000000000000 [kernel.kallsyms] 3a0d0629efe74a8da3eeba372cdbd74ad9b8f5d5 /usr/local/bin/noploop The reason [kernel.kallsyms] shows a 0 build-id comes from the way buildids are injected in the stream. The buildid for the kernel is provided by a BUILD_ID record. The [kernel.kallsyms] is provided by a MMAP record. There is no clean and obvious way to link the two, unfortunately. In regular mode, the kernel buildid is generated from reading the ELF image or kallsyms and perf knows to associate [kernel.kallsyms] to it. Later on, when perf processes the [kernel.kallsyms] MMAP record, it will already have a dso for it. So for now, make sure perf buildid-list shows the buildids for everything but the kernel image. perf session: Move threads to struct machine The 'machine' abstraction was introduced with 'perf kvm' where we could have samples for the host and multiple guests, but at the time we ended up keeping the list of all machines threads all in session->host_machine. Move the threads rb_tree to struct machine to separate the namespaces. perf session: Pass evsel in event_ops->sample() Resolving the sample->id to an evsel since the most advanced tools, report and annotate, and the others will too when they evolve to properly support multi-event perf.data files. Good also because it does an extra validation, checking that the ID is valid when present. When that is not the case, the overhead is just a branch + function call (perf_evlist__id2evsel). perf session: Parse sample earlier At perf_session__process_event, so that we reduce the number of lines in eache tool sample processing routine that now receives a sample_data pointer already parsed. This will also be useful in the next patch, where we'll allow sample the identity fields in MMAP, FORK, EXIT, etc, when it will be possible to see (cpu, timestamp) just after before every event. Also validate callchains in perf_session__process_event, i.e. as early as possible, and keep a counter of the number of events discarded due to invalid callchains, warning the user about it if it happens. There is an assumption that was kept that all events have the same sample_type, that will be dealt with in the future, when this preexisting limitation will be removed. perf tools: Release thread resources on PERF_RECORD_EXIT For long running sessions with many threads with short lifetimes the amount of memory that the buildid process takes is too much. Since we don't have hist_entries that may be pointing to them, we can just release the resources associated with each thread when the exit (PERF_RECORD_EXIT) event is received. For normal processing we need to annotate maps with hits, and thus hist_entries pointing to it and drop the ones that had none. Will be done in a followup patch. Cc: David S. perf buildid: add perfconfig option to specify buildid cache dir This patch adds the ability to specify an alternate directory to store the buildid cache (buildids, copy of binaries). By default, it is hardcoded to $HOME/.debug. This directory contains immutable data. The layout of the directory is such that no conflicts in filenames are possible. A modification in a file, yields a different buildid and thus a different location in the subdir hierarchy. You may want to put the buildid cache elsewhere because of disk space limitation or simply to share the cache between users. It is also useful for remote collect vs. local analysis of profiles. This patch adds a new config option to the perfconfig file. Under the tag 'buildid', there is a dir option. For instance, if you have: $ cat /etc/perfconfig [buildid] dir = /var/cache/perf-buildid All buildids and binaries are be saved in the directory specified. The perf record, buildid-list, buildid-cache, report, annotate, and archive commands will it to pull information out. The option can be set in the system-wide perfconfig file or in the $HOME/.perfconfig file. Cc: David S. perf annotate: Use build-ids to find the right DSO We were still using the pathname found on the MMAP event, that could not be the one we used when recording, so use the build-id cache for that, only falling back to use the pathname in the MMAP event if no build-ids are available.
