perf auxtrace: Add 'T' itrace option for timestamp trace An AUX trace can contain timestamp, but in some situations, the hardware trace module (e.g. Arm CoreSight) cannot decide the traced timestamp is the same source with CPU's time, thus the decoder can not use the timestamp trace for samples. This patch introduces 'T' itrace option. If users know the platforms they are working on have the same time counter with CPUs, users can use this new option to tell a decoder for using timestamp trace as kernel time. perf intel-pt: Synthesize cycle events There is no good reason why we cannot synthesize "cycle" events from Intel PT just as we can synthesize "instruction" events, in particular when CYC packets are available. This enables using PT to getting much more accurate cycle profiles than regular sampling (record -e cycles) when the work last for very short periods (<10 ms). Thus, add support for this, based off of the existing IPC calculation framework. The new option to --itrace is "y" (for cYcles), as c was taken for calls. Cycle and instruction events can be synthesized together, and are by default. The only real caveat is that CYC packets are only emitted whenever some other packet is, which in practice is when a branch instruction is encountered (and not even all branches). Thus, even at no subsampling (e.g. --itrace=y0ns), it is impossible to get more accuracy than a single basic block, and all cycles spent executing that block will get attributed to the branch instruction that ends the packet. Thus, one cannot know whether the cycles came from e.g. a specific load, a mispredicted branch, or something else. When subsampling (which is the default), the cycle events will get smeared out even more, but will still be generally useful to attribute cycle counts to functions. perf evlist: Rename cpus to user_requested_cpus evlist contains cpus and all_cpus. all_cpus is the union of the cpu maps of all evsels. For non-task targets, cpus is set to be cpus requested from the command line, defaulting to all online cpus if no cpus are specified. For an uncore event, all_cpus may be just CPU 0 or every online CPU. This causes all_cpus to have fewer values than the cpus variable which is confusing given the 'all' in the name. To try to make the behavior clearer, rename cpus to user_requested_cpus and add comments on the two struct variables. perf cpumap: Give CPUs their own type A common problem is confusing CPU map indices with the CPU, by wrapping the CPU with a struct then this is avoided. This approach is similar to atomic_t. perf auxtrace: Add compat_auxtrace_mmap__{read_head|write_tail} When perf runs in compat mode (kernel in 64-bit mode and the perf is in 32-bit mode), the 64-bit value atomicity in the user space cannot be assured, E.g. on some architectures, the 64-bit value accessing is split into two instructions, one is for the low 32-bit word accessing and another is for the high 32-bit word. This patch introduces weak functions compat_auxtrace_mmap__read_head() and compat_auxtrace_mmap__write_tail(), as their naming indicates, when perf tool works in compat mode, it uses these two functions to access the AUX head and tail. These two functions can allow the perf tool to work properly in certain conditions, e.g. when perf tool works in snapshot mode with only using AUX head pointer, or perf tool uses the AUX buffer and the incremented tail is not bigger than 4GB. When perf tool cannot handle the case when the AUX tail is bigger than 4GB, the function compat_auxtrace_mmap__write_tail() returns -1 and tells the caller to bail out for the error. These two functions are declared as weak attribute, this allows to implement arch specific functions if any arch can support the 64-bit value atomicity in compat mode. perf auxtrace: Fix auxtrace queue conflict The only requirement of an auxtrace queue is that the buffers are in time order. That is achieved by making separate queues for separate perf buffer or AUX area buffer mmaps. That generally means a separate queue per cpu for per-cpu contexts, and a separate queue per thread for per-task contexts. When buffers are added to a queue, perf checks that the buffer cpu and thread id (tid) match the queue cpu and thread id. However, generally, that need not be true, and perf will queue buffers correctly anyway, so the check is not needed. In addition, the check gets erroneously hit when using sample mode to trace multiple threads. Consequently, fix that case by removing the check. tools perf: Move from sane_ctype.h obtained from git to the Linux's original We got the sane_ctype.h headers from git and kept using it so far, but since that code originally came from the kernel sources to the git sources, perhaps its better to just use the one in the kernel, so that we can leverage tools/perf/check_headers.sh to be notified when our copy gets out of sync, i.e. when fixes or goodies are added to the code we've copied. This will help with things like tools/lib/string.c where we want to have more things in common with the kernel, such as strim(), skip_spaces(), etc so as to go on removing the things that we have in tools/perf/util/ and instead using the code in the kernel, indirectly and removing things like EXPORT_SYMBOL(), etc, getting notified when fixes and improvements are made to the original code. Hopefully this also should help with reducing the difference of code hosted in tools/ to the one in the kernel proper. perf script: Make itrace script default to all calls By default 'perf script' for itrace outputs sampled instructions or branches. In my experience this is confusing to users because it's hard to correlate with real program behavior. The sampling makes sense for tools like 'perf report' that actually sample to reduce the run time, but run time is normally not a problem for 'perf script'. It's better to give an accurate representation of the program flow. Default 'perf script' to output all calls for itrace. That's a much saner default. Additional notes about the underlying hardware and software implementation, provided by Hendrik Brueckner (see Link: below). ============================================================================= The CPU-Measurement Facility (CPU-MF) provides a set of functions to obtain performance information on the mainframe. Basically, it was introduced with System z10 years ago for the z/Architecture, that means, 64-bit. For Linux, there are two facilities of interest, counter facility and sampling facility. The counter facility provides hardware counters for instructions, cycles, crypto-activities, and many more. The sampling facility is a hardware sampler that when started will write samples at a particular interval into a sampling buffer. At some point, for example, if a sample block is full, it generates an interrupt to collect samples (while the sampler continues to run). Few years ago, I started to provide the a perf PMU to use the counter and sampling facilities. Recently, the device driver was updated to also "export" the sampling buffer into the AUX area. Thomas now completed the related perf work to interpret and process these AUX data. If people are more interested in the sampling facility, they can have a look into: - The Load-Program-Parameter and the CPU-Measurement Facilities, SA23-2260-05 http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=isg26fcd1cc32246f4c8852574ce0044734a and to learn how-to use it for Linux on Z, have look at chapter 54, "Using the CPU-measurement facilities" in the: - Device Drivers, Features, and Commands, SC33-8411-34 http://public.dhe.ibm.com/software/dw/linux390/docu/l416dd34.pdf ============================================================================= Signed-off-by: Thomas Richter <tmricht@linux.ibm.com> Reviewed-by: Hendrik Brueckner <brueckner@linux.ibm.com> Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20180803100758.GA28475@linux.ibm.com Cc: Heiko Carstens <heiko.carstens@de.ibm.com> Cc: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com> Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20180802074622.13641-2-tmricht@linux.ibm.com Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

perf tools: Add support for skipping itrace instructions When using 'perf script' to look at PT traces it is often useful to ignore the initialization code at the beginning. On larger traces which may have many millions of instructions in initialization code doing that in a pipeline can be very slow, with perf script spending a lot of CPU time calling printf and writing data. This patch adds an extension to the --itrace argument that skips 'n' events (instructions, branches or transactions) at the beginning. This is much more efficient. v2: Add support for BTS (Adrian Hunter) Document in itrace.txt Fix branch check Check transactions and instructions too Committer note: To test intel_pt one needs to make sure VT-x isn't active, i.e. stopping KVM guests on the test machine, as described by Andi Kleen at http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20160301234953.GD23621@tassilo.jf.intel.com Signed-off-by: Andi Kleen <ak@linux.intel.com> Tested-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com> Cc: Adrian Hunter <adrian.hunter@intel.com> Cc: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org> Cc: Stephane Eranian <eranian@google.com> Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1459187142-20035-1-git-send-email-andi@firstfloor.org Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

perf auxtrace: Fix 'instructions' period of zero Instruction tracing options (i.e. --itrace) include an option for sampling instructions at an arbitrary period. e.g. --itrace=i10us means make an 'instructions' sample for every 10us of trace. Currently the logic does not distinguish between a period of zero and no period being specified at all, so it gets treated as the default period which is 100000. That doesn't really make sense. Fix it so that zero period is accepted and treated as meaning "as often as possible". In the case of Intel PT that is the same as a period of 1 and a unit of 'instructions' (i.e. --itrace=i1i). perf tools: Take Intel PT into use To record an AUX area, the weak function auxtrace_record__init() must be implemented. Equally to decode an AUX area, the AUX area tracing type must be added to the perf_event__process_auxtrace_info() function. perf tools: Add AUX area tracing index Add an index of AUX area tracing events within a perf.data file. perf record uses a special user event PERF_RECORD_FINISHED_ROUND to enable sorting of events in chunks instead of having to sort all events altogether. AUX area tracing events contain data that can span back to the very beginning of the recording period. i.e. they do not obey the rules of PERF_RECORD_FINISHED_ROUND. By adding an index, AUX area tracing events can be found in advance and the PERF_RECORD_FINISHED_ROUND approach works as usual. The index is recorded with the auxtrace feature in the perf.data file. A session reads the index but does not process it. An AUX area decoder can queue all the AUX area data in advance using auxtrace_queues__process_index() or otherwise process the index in some custom manner. perf auxtrace: Add support for AUX area recording Add support for reading from the AUX area tracing mmap and synthesizing AUX area tracing events. Recording is mainly handled by auxtrace_mmap__read() and perf_event__synthesize_auxtrace() but there are callbacks for miscellaneous needs including validating and processing user options, populating private data in auxtrace_info_event, and freeing the structure when finished.
