perf build: Shellcheck support for OUTPUT directory Migrate Makefile.tests to Build so that variables like rule_mkdir are defined via Makefile.build (needed so the output directory can be created). This requires SHELLCHECK being exported and the clean rule tweaking to remove the files in find. Change find "-perm -o=x" as it was failing on my Debian based Linux kernel tree, switch to using "-executable". Adding a filename prefix of "." to the shellcheck log files is a pain and error prone in make, remove this prefix and just add the shellcheck log files to .gitignore. Fix the command echo so that running the test is displayed. perf parse-events: Remove BPF event support New features like the BPF --filter support in perf record have made the BPF event functionality somewhat redundant. As shown by commit fcb027c1a4f6 ("perf tools: Revert enable indices setting syntax for BPF map") and commit 14e4b9f4289a ("perf trace: Raw augmented syscalls fix libbpf 1.0+ compatibility") the BPF event support hasn't been well maintained and it adds considerable complexity in areas like event parsing, not least as '/' is a separator for event modifiers as well as in paths. This patch removes support in the event parser for BPF events and then the associated functions are removed. This leads to the removal of whole source files like bpf-loader.c. Removing support means that augmented syscalls in perf trace is broken, this will be fixed in a later commit adding support using BPF skeletons. The removal of BPF events causes an unused label warning from flex generated code, so update build to ignore it: ``` util/parse-events-flex.c:2704:1: error: label ‘find_rule’ defined but not used [-Werror=unused-label] 2704 | find_rule: /* we branch to this label when backing up */ ``` Committer notes: Extracted from a larger patch that was also removing the support for linking with libllvm and libclang, that were an alternative to using an external clang execution to compile the .c event source code into BPF bytecode. Testing it: # perf trace -e /home/acme/git/perf/tools/perf/examples/bpf/augmented_raw_syscalls.c event syntax error: '/home/acme/git/perf/tools/perf/examples/bpf/augmented_raw_syscalls.c' \___ Bad event or PMU Unabled to find PMU or event on a PMU of 'home' Initial error: event syntax error: '/home/acme/git/perf/tools/perf/examples/bpf/augmented_raw_syscalls.c' \___ Cannot find PMU `home'. perf bpf: Remove support for embedding clang for compiling BPF events (-e foo.c) This never was in the default build for perf, is difficult to maintain as it uses clang/llvm internals so ditch it, keeping, for now, the external compilation of .c BPF into .o bytecode and its subsequent loading, that is also going to be removed, do it separately to help bisection and to properly document what is being removed and why. perf test: Add Symbols test Add a test to check function symbols do not overlap and are not zero length. The main motivation for the test is to make it easier to review changes to PLT symbol synthesis i.e. changes to dso__synthesize_plt_symbols(). By default the test uses the perf executable as a test DSO, but a specific DSO can be specified via a new perf test option "--dso". The test is useful in the following ways: - Any DSO can be tested, even ones that do not run on the current architecture. For example, using cross-compiled DSOs to see how well perf handles different architectures. - With verbose > 1 (e.g. -vv), all the symbols are printed, which makes it easier to see issues. - perf removes duplicate symbols and expands zero-length symbols to reach the next symbol, however that is done before adding synthesized symbols, so the test is checking those also. Example: $ perf test -v Symbols 74: Symbols : --- start --- test child forked, pid 154918 Testing /home/user/bin/perf Overlapping symbols: 7d000-7f3a0 g _init 7d030-7d040 g __printf_chk@plt test child finished with -1 ---- end ---- Symbols: FAILED! Note the test fails because perf expands the _init symbol over the PLT because there are no PLT symbols at that point, but then dso__synthesize_plt_symbols() creates them. perf build: Use libtraceevent from the system Remove the LIBTRACEEVENT_DYNAMIC and LIBTRACEFS_DYNAMIC make command line variables. If libtraceevent isn't installed or NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 is passed to the build, don't compile in libtraceevent and libtracefs support. This also disables CONFIG_TRACE that controls "perf trace". Building with NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 uncovered some more build failures: - Make building of data-convert-bt.c to CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y - perf-$(CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT) += scripts/ - bpf_kwork.o needs also to be dependent on CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y - The python binding needed some fixups and util/trace-event.c can't be built and linked with the python binding shared object, so remove it in tools/perf/util/setup.py and exclude it from the list of dependencies in the python/perf.so Makefile.perf target. Building without libtraceevent-devel installed uncovered more build failures: - The python binding tools/perf/util/python.c was assuming that traceevent/parse-events.h was always available, which was the case when we defaulted to using the in-kernel tools/lib/traceevent/ files, now we need to enclose it under ifdef HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT, just like the other parts of it that deal with tracepoints. - We have to ifdef the rules in the Build files with CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y to build builtin-trace.c and tools/perf/trace/beauty/ as we only ifdef setting CONFIG_TRACE=y when setting NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 in the make command line, not when we don't detect libtraceevent-devel installed in the system. Simplification here to avoid these two ways of disabling builtin-trace.c and not having CONFIG_TRACE=y when libtraceevent-devel isn't installed is the clean way. From Athira: <quote> tools/perf/arch/powerpc/util/Build -perf-y += kvm-stat.o +perf-$(CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT) += kvm-stat.o </quote> Then, ditto for arm64 and s390, detected by container cross build tests. - s/390 uses test__checkevent_tracepoint() that is now only available if HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is defined, enclose the callsite with ifder HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT. Also from Athira: <quote> With this change, I could successfully compile in these environment: - Without libtraceevent-devel installed - With libtraceevent-devel installed - With “make NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1” </quote> Then, finally rename CONFIG_TRACEEVENT to CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT for consistency with other libraries detected in tools/perf/. perf test: Refactor shell tests allowing subdirs This is a prelude to adding more tests to shell tests and in order to support putting those tests into subdirectories, I need to change the test code that scans/finds and runs them. To support subdirs I have to recurse so it's time to refactor the code to allow this and centralize the shell script finding into one location and only one single scan that builds a list of all the found tests in memory instead of it being duplicated in 3 places. This code also optimizes things like knowing the max width of desciption strings (as we can do that while we scan instead of a whole new pass of opening files). It also more cleanly filters scripts to see only *.sh files thus skipping random other files in directories like *~ backup files, other random junk/data files that may appear and the scripts must be executable to make the cut (this ensures the script lib dir is not seen as scripts to run). This avoids perf test running previous older versions of test scripts that are editor backup files as well as skipping perf.data files that may appear and so on. perf tools: Add optional support for libpfm4 This patch links perf with the libpfm4 library if it is available and LIBPFM4 is passed to the build. The libpfm4 library contains hardware event tables for all processors supported by perf_events. It is a helper library that helps convert from a symbolic event name to the event encoding required by the underlying kernel interface. This library is open-source and available from: http://perfmon2.sf.net. With this patch, it is possible to specify full hardware events by name. Hardware filters are also supported. Events must be specified via the --pfm-events and not -e option. Both options are active at the same time and it is possible to mix and match: $ perf stat --pfm-events inst_retired:any_p:c=1:i -e cycles .... One needs to explicitely ask for its inclusion by using the LIBPFM4 make command line option, ie its opt-in rather than opt-out of feature detection and build support. perf tools: Fix build with ARCH=x86_64 With commit: 0a943cb10ce78 (tools build: Add HOSTARCH Makefile variable) when building for ARCH=x86_64, ARCH=x86_64 is passed to perf instead of ARCH=x86, so the perf build process searchs header files from tools/arch/x86_64/include, which doesn't exist. The following build failure is seen: In file included from util/event.c:2:0: tools/include/uapi/linux/mman.h:4:27: fatal error: uapi/asm/mman.h: No such file or directory compilation terminated. perf tools: Add a simple expression parser for JSON Add a simple expression parser good enough to parse JSON relation expressions. The parser is implemented using bison. This is just intended as an simple parser for internal usage in the event lists, not the beginning of a "perf scripting language" v2: Use expr__ prefix instead of expr_ Support multiple free variables for parser Committer note: The v2 patch had: %define api.pure full In expr.y, that is a feature introduced in bison 2.7, to have reentrant parsers, not using global variables, which would make tools/perf stop building with the bison version shipped in older distros, so Andi realised that the other parsers (e.g. parse-events.y) were using: %pure-parser Which is present in older versions of bison and fits the bill. I added: CFLAGS_expr-bison.o += -DYYENABLE_NLS=0 -DYYLTYPE_IS_TRIVIAL=0 -w To finally make it build, copying what was there for pmu-bison.o, another parser. perf test: Add libbpf relocation checker There's a bug in LLVM that it can generate unneeded relocation information. See [1] and [2]. Libbpf should check the target section of a relocation symbol. Before fixing libbpf, the new test case can be loaded into kernel, the global variable acts like the first map. It is incorrect. perf test: Test the BPF prologue adding infrastructure This patch introduces a new BPF script to test the BPF prologue adding routines. The new script probes at null_lseek, which is the function pointer used when we try to lseek on '/dev/null'. The null_lseek function is chosen because it is used by function pointers, so we don't need to consider inlining and LTO. By extracting file->f_mode, bpf-script-test-prologue.c should know whether the file is writable or readonly. According to llseek_loop() and bpf-script-test-prologue.c, one fourth of total lseeks should be collected. perf test: Add 'perf test BPF' This patch adds BPF testcase for testing BPF event filtering. By utilizing the result of 'perf test LLVM', this patch compiles the eBPF sample program then test its ability. The BPF script in 'perf test LLVM' lets only 50% samples generated by epoll_pwait() to be captured. This patch runs that system call for 111 times, so the result should contain 56 samples. perf test: Enhance the LLVM test: update basic BPF test program This patch replaces the original toy BPF program with the previously introduced bpf-script-example.c. Dynamically embeddeding it into 'llvm-src-base.c'. The newly introduced BPF program attaches a BPF program to 'sys_epoll_pwait()'. perf itself never use that syscall, so further test can verify their result with it. The program would generate 1 sample in every 2 calls of epoll_pwait() system call. Since the resulting BPF object is useful per se for further tests, test_llvm__fetch_bpf_obj() is introduced for creating BPF objects from source. The LLVM test was rewritten to use it. perf tools: Add a test for decoding of new x86 instructions Add a new test titled: Test x86 instruction decoder - new instructions The purpose of this test is to check the instruction decoder after new instructions have been added. Initially, MPX instructions are tested which are already supported, but the definitions in x86-opcode-map.txt will be tweaked in a subsequent patch, after which this test can be run to verify those changes. The data for the test comes from assembly language instructions in insn-x86-dat-src.c which is converted into bytes by the scripts gen-insn-x86-dat.sh and gen-insn-x86-dat.awk, and included into the test program insn-x86.c as insn-x86-dat-32.c and insn-x86-dat-64.c. The conversion is not done as part of the perf tools build because the test data must be under (git) change control in order for the test to be repeatably-correct. Also it may require a recent version of binutils. perf tests: Add LLVM test for eBPF on-the-fly compiling Previous patches introduce llvm__compile_bpf() to compile source file to eBPF object. This patch adds testcase to test it. It also tests libbpf by opening generated object after applying next patch which introduces HAVE_LIBBPF_SUPPORT option. Since llvm__compile_bpf() prints long messages which users who don't explicitly test llvm doesn't care, this patch set verbose to -1 to suppress all debug, warning and error message, and hint user use 'perf test -v' to see the full output. For the same reason, if clang is not found in PATH and there's no [llvm] section in .perfconfig, skip this test. perf tools: Add kmod_path__parse function Provides united way of parsing kernel module path into several components. The new kmod_path__parse function and few defines: int __kmod_path__parse(struct kmod_path *m, const char *path, bool alloc_name, bool alloc_ext); #define kmod_path__parse(__m, __p) __kmod_path__parse(__m, __p, false, false) #define kmod_path__parse_name(__m, __p) __kmod_path__parse(__m, __p, true , false) #define kmod_path__parse_ext(__m, __p) __kmod_path__parse(__m, __p, false, true) parse kernel module @path and updates @m argument like: @comp - true if @path contains supported compression suffix, false otherwise @kmod - true if @path contains '.ko' suffix in right position, false otherwise @name - if (@alloc_name && @kmod) is true, it contains strdup-ed base name of the kernel module without suffixes, otherwise strudup-ed base name of @path @ext - if (@alloc_ext && @comp) is true, it contains strdup-ed string the compression suffix It returns 0 if there's no strdup error, -ENOMEM otherwise.
