perf kvm: Reference count 'struct kvm_info' hists__add_entry_ops() doesn't allocate a new histogram entry if it has an existing entry for a KVM event, in this case, find_create_kvm_event() allocates a 'struct kvm_info' but it's not used by any histograms and never freed. To fix the memory leak, this patch first introduces a refcnt and a set of functions for refcnt operations on 'struct kvm_info'. When the data structure is not anymore used (the refcnt hits zero) kvm_info__zput() will free the memory used. Committer: Provide a nop version of kvm_info__zput() to be used when HAVE_KVM_STAT_SUPPORT isn't defined as it is used unconditionally in hists__findnew_entry() and hist_entry__delete(). perf kvm: Use histograms list to replace cached list perf kvm tool defines its own cached list which is managed with RB tree, histograms also provide RB tree to manage data entries. Since now we have introduced histograms in the tool, it's not necessary to use the self defined list and we can directly use histograms list to manage KVM events. This patch changes to use histograms list to track KVM events, and it invokes the common function hists__output_resort_cb() to sort result, this also give us flexibility to extend more sorting key words easily. After histograms list supported, the cached list is redundant so remove the relevant code for it. Building without libtraceevent-devel installed uncovered more build failures: - The python binding tools/perf/util/python.c was assuming that traceevent/parse-events.h was always available, which was the case when we defaulted to using the in-kernel tools/lib/traceevent/ files, now we need to enclose it under ifdef HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT, just like the other parts of it that deal with tracepoints. - We have to ifdef the rules in the Build files with CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y to build builtin-trace.c and tools/perf/trace/beauty/ as we only ifdef setting CONFIG_TRACE=y when setting NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 in the make command line, not when we don't detect libtraceevent-devel installed in the system. Simplification here to avoid these two ways of disabling builtin-trace.c and not having CONFIG_TRACE=y when libtraceevent-devel isn't installed is the clean way. From Athira: <quote> tools/perf/arch/powerpc/util/Build -perf-y += kvm-stat.o +perf-$(CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT) += kvm-stat.o </quote> Then, ditto for arm64 and s390, detected by container cross build tests. - s/390 uses test__checkevent_tracepoint() that is now only available if HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is defined, enclose the callsite with ifder HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT. Also from Athira: <quote> With this change, I could successfully compile in these environment: - Without libtraceevent-devel installed - With libtraceevent-devel installed - With “make NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1” </quote> Then, finally rename CONFIG_TRACEEVENT to CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT for consistency with other libraries detected in tools/perf/. perf kvm: Fix subcommand matching error Currently the 'diff', 'top', 'buildid-list' and 'stat' perf commands use strncmp() to match subcommands. As a result, matching does not meet expectation. For example: # perf kvm diff1234 # Event 'cycles' # # Baseline Delta Abs Shared Object Symbol # ........ ......... ............. ...... # # Event 'dummy:HG' # # Baseline Delta Abs Shared Object Symbol # ........ ......... ............. ...... # # echo $? 0 # Invalid information should be returned, but success is actually returned. Solution: Use strstarts() to match subcommands. After: # perf kvm diff1234 Usage: perf kvm [<options>] {top|record|report|diff|buildid-list|stat} -i, --input <file> Input file name -o, --output <file> Output file name -v, --verbose be more verbose (show counter open errors, etc) --guest Collect guest os data --guest-code Guest code can be found in hypervisor process --guestkallsyms <file> file saving guest os /proc/kallsyms --guestmodules <file> file saving guest os /proc/modules --guestmount <directory> guest mount directory under which every guest os instance has a subdir --guestvmlinux <file> file saving guest os vmlinux --host Collect host os data # echo $? 129 # Signed-off-by: Yang Jihong <yangjihong1@huawei.com> Acked-by: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org> Tested-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com> Cc: Alexander Shishkin <alexander.shishkin@linux.intel.com> Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@redhat.com> Cc: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org> Cc: Mark Rutland <mark.rutland@arm.com> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20220808092408.107399-2-yangjihong1@huawei.com Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

perf tools: Enhance the matching of sub-commands abbreviations We support short command 'rec*' for 'record' and 'rep*' for 'report' in lots of sub-commands, but the matching is not quite strict currnetly. It may be puzzling sometime, like we mis-type a 'recport' to report but it will perform 'record' in fact without any message. To fix this, add a check to ensure that the short cmd is valid prefix of the real command. Committer testing: [root@quaco ~]# perf c2c re sleep 1 Usage: perf c2c {record|report} -v, --verbose be more verbose (show counter open errors, etc) # perf c2c rec sleep 1 [ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ] [ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.038 MB perf.data (16 samples) ] # perf c2c recport sleep 1 Usage: perf c2c {record|report} -v, --verbose be more verbose (show counter open errors, etc) # perf c2c record sleep 1 [ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ] [ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.038 MB perf.data (15 samples) ] # perf c2c records sleep 1 Usage: perf c2c {record|report} -v, --verbose be more verbose (show counter open errors, etc) # Signed-off-by: Wei Li <liwei391@huawei.com> Tested-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com> Cc: Alexander Shishkin <alexander.shishkin@linux.intel.com> Cc: Hanjun Guo <guohanjun@huawei.com> Cc: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org> Cc: Mark Rutland <mark.rutland@arm.com> Cc: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org> Cc: Rui Xiang <rui.xiang@huawei.com> Link: http://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20220325092032.2956161-1-liwei391@huawei.com Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

perf evlist: Adopt backwards ring buffer state enum As this isn't used at all in mmap.h but in evlist.h, so to cut down the header dependency tree, move it to where it is used. Also add mmap.h to the places using it but previously getting it indirectly via evlist.h. Add missing pthread.h to evlist.h, as it has a pthread_t struct member and was getting the header via mmap.h. Noticed while processing a Jiri's libperf batch touching mmap.h, where almost everything gets rebuilt because evlist.h is so popular, so cut down't this rebuild the world party. perf session: Return error code for perf_session__new() function on failure This patch is to return error code of perf_new_session function on failure instead of NULL. perf kvm: Add arch neutral function to choose event for perf kvm record 'perf kvm record' uses 'cycles'(if the user did not specify any event) as the default event to profile the guest. This will not provide any proper samples from the guest incase of powerpc architecture, since in powerpc the PMUs are controlled by the guest rather than the host. Patch adds a function to pick an arch specific event for 'perf kvm record', instead of selecting 'cycles' as a default event for all architectures. For powerpc this function checks for any user specified event, and if there isn't any it returns invalid instead of proceeding with 'cycles' event. perf data: Add global path holder Add a 'path' member to 'struct perf_data'. It will keep the configured path for the data (const char *). The path in struct perf_data_file is now dynamically allocated (duped) from it. This scheme is useful/used in following patches where struct perf_data::path holds the 'configure' directory path and struct perf_data_file::path holds the allocated path for specific files. perf tools: Optimize sample parsing for ordered events Currently when using ordered events we parse the sample twice (the perf_evlist__parse_sample function). Once before we queue the sample for sorting: perf_session__process_event perf_evlist__parse_sample(sample) perf_session__queue_event(sample.time) And then when we deliver the sorted sample: ordered_events__deliver_event perf_evlist__parse_sample perf_session__deliver_event We can skip the initial full sample parsing by using perf_evlist__parse_sample_timestamp function, which got introduced earlier. The new path looks like: perf_session__process_event perf_evlist__parse_sample_timestamp perf_session__queue_event ordered_events__deliver_event perf_session__deliver_event perf_evlist__parse_sample It saves some instructions and is slightly faster: Before: Performance counter stats for './perf.old report --stdio' (5 runs): 64,396,007,225 cycles:u ( +- 0.97% ) 105,882,112,735 instructions:u # 1.64 insn per cycle ( +- 0.00% ) 21.618103465 seconds time elapsed ( +- 1.12% ) After: Performance counter stats for './perf report --stdio' (5 runs): 60,567,807,182 cycles:u ( +- 0.40% ) 104,853,333,514 instructions:u # 1.73 insn per cycle ( +- 0.00% ) 20.168895243 seconds time elapsed ( +- 0.32% ) Signed-off-by: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org> Cc: Adrian Hunter <adrian.hunter@intel.com> Cc: David Ahern <dsahern@gmail.com> Cc: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org> Cc: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org> Cc: Wang Nan <wangnan0@huawei.com> Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/n/tip-cjp2tuk0qkjs9dxzlpmm34ua@git.kernel.org Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. perf top: Implement multithreading for perf_event__synthesize_threads The proc files which is sorted with alphabetical order are evenly assigned to several synthesize threads to be processed in parallel. For 'perf top', the threads number hard code to online CPU number. The following patch will introduce an option to set it. For other perf tools, the thread number is 1. Because the process function is not ready for multithreading, e.g. process_synthesized_event. This patch series only support event synthesize multithreading for 'perf top'. For other tools, it can be done separately later. With multithread applied, the total processing time can get up to 1.56x speedup on Knights Mill for 'perf top'. For specific single event processing, the processing time could increase because of the lock contention. So proc_map_timeout may need to be increased. Otherwise some proc maps will be truncated. Based on my test, increasing the proc_map_timeout has small impact on the total processing time. The total processing time still get 1.49x speedup on Knights Mill after increasing the proc_map_timeout. The patch itself doesn't increase the proc_map_timeout. Doesn't need to implement multithreading for per task monitoring, perf_event__synthesize_thread_map. It doesn't have performance issue. perf tools: Provide mutex wrappers for pthreads rwlocks Andi reported a performance drop in single threaded perf tools such as 'perf script' due to the growing number of locks being put in place to allow for multithreaded tools, so wrap the POSIX threads rwlock routines with the names used for such kinds of locks in the Linux kernel and then allow for tools to ask for those locks to be used or not. I.e. a tool may have a multithreaded phase and then switch to single threaded, like the upcoming patches for the synthesizing of PERF_RECORD_{FORK,MMAP,etc} for pre-existing processes to then switch to single threaded mode in 'perf top'. The init routines will not be conditional, this way starting as single threaded to then move to multi threaded mode should be possible. tools: Introduce str_error_r() The tools so far have been using the strerror_r() GNU variant, that returns a string, be it the buffer passed or something else. But that, besides being tricky in cases where we expect that the function using strerror_r() returns the error formatted in a provided buffer (we have to check if it returned something else and copy that instead), breaks the build on systems not using glibc, like Alpine Linux, where musl libc is used. So, introduce yet another wrapper, str_error_r(), that has the GNU interface, but uses the portable XSI variant of strerror_r(), so that users rest asured that the provided buffer is used and it is what is returned. perf kvm/powerpc: Port perf kvm stat to powerpc perf kvm can be used to analyze guest exit reasons. This support already exists in x86. Hence, porting it to powerpc. - To trace KVM events : perf kvm stat record If many guests are running, we can track for a specific guest by using --pid as in : perf kvm stat record --pid <pid> - To see the results : perf kvm stat report The result shows the number of exits (from the guest context to host/hypervisor context) grouped by their respective exit reasons with their frequency. Since, different powerpc machines have different KVM tracepoints, this patch discovers the available tracepoints dynamically and accordingly looks for them. If any single tracepoint is not present, this support won't be enabled for reporting. To record, this will fail if any of the events we are looking to record isn't available. Right now, its only supported on PowerPC Book3S_HV architectures. To analyze the different exits, group them and present them (in a slight descriptive way) to the user, we need a mapping between the "exit code" (dumped in the kvm_guest_exit tracepoint data) and to its related Interrupt vector description (exit reason). This patch adds this mapping in book3s_hv_exits.h. It records on two available KVM tracepoints for book3s_hv: "kvm_hv:kvm_guest_exit" and "kvm_hv:kvm_guest_enter". perf machine: Protect the machine->threads with a rwlock In addition to using refcounts for the struct thread lifetime management, we need to protect access to machine->threads from concurrent access. That happens in 'perf top', where a thread processes events, inserting and deleting entries from that rb_tree while another thread decays hist_entries, that end up dropping references and ultimately deleting threads from the rb_tree and releasing its resources when no further hist_entry (or other data structures, like in 'perf sched') references it. So the rule is the same for refcounts + protected trees in the kernel, get the tree lock, find object, bump the refcount, drop the tree lock, return, use object, drop the refcount if no more use of it is needed, keep it if storing it in some other data structure, drop when releasing that data structure. I.e. pair "t = machine__find(new)_thread()" with a "thread__put(t)", and "perf_event__preprocess_sample(&al)" with "addr_location__put(&al)". The addr_location__put() one is because as we return references to several data structures, we may end up adding more reference counting for the other data structures and then we'll drop it at addr_location__put() time. perf kvm stat live: Enable events copying Process of analyzing events caused by 2 functions: mmap_read() and finished_round(). During mmap_read(), perf receives events from shared memory, queues their pointers for further processing in finished_round() and notifies the kernel that the events have been processed. Example: # perf kvm stat report Analyze events for all VCPUs: VM-EXIT Samples Samples% Time% Min Time Max Time Avg time [..] 0xB2 MSCH 12 0.07% 0.00% 0us 8us 7.31us ( +- 2.11% ) 0xB2 CHSC 12 0.07% 0.00% 0us 18us 9.39us ( +- 9.49% ) 0xB2 STPX 8 0.05% 0.00% 0us 2us 1.88us ( +- 7.18% ) 0xB2 STSI 7 0.04% 0.00% 0us 44us 16.49us ( +- 38.20% ) [..] This happens because the 'stats' structure is not initialized and stats->min equals to 0. Lets initialize the structure for every event after its allocation using init_stats() function. This initializes stats->min to -1 and makes 'Min time' statistics counting work: # perf kvm stat report Analyze events for all VCPUs: VM-EXIT Samples Samples% Time% Min Time Max Time Avg time [..] 0xB2 MSCH 12 0.07% 0.00% 6us 8us 7.31us ( +- 2.11% ) 0xB2 CHSC 12 0.07% 0.00% 7us 18us 9.39us ( +- 9.49% ) 0xB2 STPX 8 0.05% 0.00% 1us 2us 1.88us ( +- 7.18% ) 0xB2 STSI 7 0.04% 0.00% 1us 44us 16.49us ( +- 38.20% ) [..] Signed-off-by: Alexander Yarygin <yarygin@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Christian Borntraeger <borntraeger@de.ibm.com> Reviewed-by: David Ahern <dsahern@gmail.com> Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1397053319-2130-3-git-send-email-borntraeger@de.ibm.com [ Fixing the perf examples changelog output ] Signed-off-by: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@redhat.com>

tools/: Convert to new topic libraries Move debugfs.* to api/fs/. We have a common tools/lib/api/ place where the Makefile lives and then we place the headers in subdirs. For example, all the fs-related stuff goes to tools/lib/api/fs/ from which we get libapikfs.a (acme got almost the naming he wanted :-)) and we link it into the tools which need it - in this case perf and tools/vm/page-types. acme: "Looking at the implementation, I think some tools can even link directly to the .o files, avoiding the .a file altogether. perf kvm: Add live mode perf kvm stat currently requires back to back record and report commands to see stats. e.g,. perf kvm stat record -p $pid -- sleep 1 perf kvm stat report This is inconvenvient for on box monitoring of a VM. This patch introduces a 'live' mode that in effect combines the record plus report into one command. e.g., to monitor a single VM: perf kvm stat live -p $pid or all VMs: perf kvm stat live Same stats options for the record+report path work with the live mode. Display rate defaults to 1 second and can be changed using the -d option. v4: - address comments from Xiao -- verify_vcpu check should not look at processors on line for the host, prune configurable options. - set attr->{mmap,comm,task} to 0 - don't need task events so trim events we have to deal with - better control of time for queue event flushing to reduce frequency of "Timestamp below last timeslice flush" failures. v3: updated to use existing tracepoint parsing code v2: removed ABSTIME arg from timerfd_settime as mentioned by Namhyung only call perf_kvm__handle_stdin when poll returns activity. perf kvm: Initialize file_name var to fix segfault The 3786063 commit: perf kvm: Rename perf_kvm to perf_kvm_stat Moved the file_name from inside a local struct var that initialized some of its members, thus zero initializing the not explicitely initialized variables, one of which was 'file_name', to a standalone local variable, but forgot to initialize it explicitely to NULL, so it then got some undefined value, causing a segfault in strdup when it wasn't, by luck, zero. perf: Make perf build for x86 with UAPI disintegration applied Make perf build for x86 once the UAPI disintegration patches for that arch have been applied by adding the appropriate -I flags - in the right order - and then converting some #includes that use ../.. notation to find main kernel headerfiles to use <asm/foo.h> and <linux/foo.h> instead. Note that -Iarch/foo/include/uapi is present _before_ -Iarch/foo/include. This makes sure we get the userspace version of the pt_regs struct. Ideally, we wouldn't have the latter -I flag at all, but unfortunately we want asm/svm.h and asm/vmx.h in builtin-kvm.c and these aren't part of the UAPI - at least not for x86. I wonder if the bits outside of the __KERNEL__ guards *should* be transferred there. I note also that perf seems to do its dependency handling manually by listing all the header files it might want to use in LIB_H in the Makefile. Can this be changed to use -MD? Note that to do make this work, we need to export and UAPI disintegrate linux/hw_breakpoint.h, which I think should've been exported previously so that perf can access the bits. We have to do this in the same patch to maintain bisectability. Signed-off-by: David Howells <dhowells@redhat.com>

perf tools: Use __maybe_used for unused variables perf defines both __used and __unused variables to use for marking unused variables. The variable __used is defined to __attribute__((__unused__)), which contradicts the kernel definition to __attribute__((__used__)) for new gcc versions. On Android, __used is also defined in system headers and this leads to warnings like: warning: '__used__' attribute ignored __unused is not defined in the kernel and is not a standard definition. If __unused is included everywhere instead of __used, this leads to conflicts with glibc headers, since glibc has a variables with this name in its headers. The best approach is to use __maybe_unused, the definition used in the kernel for __attribute__((unused)). In this way there is only one definition in perf sources (instead of 2 definitions that point to the same thing: __used and __unused) and it works on both Linux and Android. This patch simply replaces all instances of __used and __unused with __maybe_unused.
