libperf cpumap: Rename perf_cpu_map__empty() to perf_cpu_map__has_any_cpu_or_is_empty() The name perf_cpu_map_empty is misleading as true is also returned when the map contains an "any" CPU (aka dummy) map. Rename to perf_cpu_map__has_any_cpu_or_is_empty(), later changes will (re)introduce perf_cpu_map__empty() and perf_cpu_map__has_any_cpu(). perf pmu: Lazily compute default config The default config is computed during creation of the PMU and may do things like scanning sysfs, when the PMU may just be used as part of scanning. Change default_config to perf_event_attr_init_default, a callback that is used when a default config needs initializing. This avoids holding onto the memory for a perf_event_attr and copying. On a tigerlake laptop running the pmu-scan benchmark: Before: Running 'internals/pmu-scan' benchmark: Computing performance of sysfs PMU event scan for 100 times Average core PMU scanning took: 28.780 usec (+- 0.503 usec) Average PMU scanning took: 283.480 usec (+- 18.471 usec) Number of openat syscalls: 30,227 After: Running 'internals/pmu-scan' benchmark: Computing performance of sysfs PMU event scan for 100 times Average core PMU scanning took: 27.880 usec (+- 0.169 usec) Average PMU scanning took: 245.260 usec (+- 15.758 usec) Number of openat syscalls: 28,914 Over 3 runs it is a nearly 12% reduction in execution time and a 4.3% of openat calls. perf parse-events: Introduce 'struct parse_events_terms' parse_events_terms() existed in function names but was passed a 'struct list_head'. As many parse_events functions take an evsel_config list as well as a parse_event_term list, and the naming head_terms and head_config is inconsistent, there's a potential to switch the lists and get errors. Introduce a 'struct parse_events_terms', that just wraps a list_head, to avoid this. Add the regular init/exit functions and transition the code to use them. perf pmu: Parse sysfs events directly from a file Rather than read a sysfs events file into a 256 byte char buffer, pass the FILE* directly to the lex/yacc parser. This avoids there being a maximum events file size. While changing the API, constify some arguments to remove unnecessary casts. Allocating the read buffer decreases the performance of pmu-scan by around 3%. perf pmu: Avoid passing format list to perf_pmu__config_terms() Abstract the format list better, hiding it in the PMU, by changing perf_pmu__config_terms() the PMU rather than the format list in the PMU. Change the PMU test to pass a dummy PMU for this purpose. Changing the test allows perf_pmu__del_formats() to become static. perf build: Use libtraceevent from the system Remove the LIBTRACEEVENT_DYNAMIC and LIBTRACEFS_DYNAMIC make command line variables. If libtraceevent isn't installed or NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 is passed to the build, don't compile in libtraceevent and libtracefs support. This also disables CONFIG_TRACE that controls "perf trace". Simplification here to avoid these two ways of disabling builtin-trace.c and not having CONFIG_TRACE=y when libtraceevent-devel isn't installed is the clean way. perf intel-pt: Fix system_wide dummy event for hybrid User space tasks can migrate between CPUs, so when tracing selected CPUs, system-wide sideband is still needed, however evlist->core.has_user_cpus is not set in the hybrid case, so check the target cpu_list instead. perf evlist: Rename cpus to user_requested_cpus evlist contains cpus and all_cpus. all_cpus is the union of the cpu maps of all evsels. For non-task targets, cpus is set to be cpus requested from the command line, defaulting to all online cpus if no cpus are specified. For an uncore event, all_cpus may be just CPU 0 or every online CPU. This causes all_cpus to have fewer values than the cpus variable which is confusing given the 'all' in the name. To try to make the behavior clearer, rename cpus to user_requested_cpus and add comments on the two struct variables. perf intel-pt: Use aux_watermark Turns out, the default setting of attr.aux_watermark to half of the total buffer size is not very useful, especially with smaller buffers. The problem is that, after half of the buffer is filled up, the kernel updates ->aux_head and sets up the next "transaction", while observing that ->aux_tail is still zero (as userspace haven't had the chance to update it), meaning that the trace will have to stop at the end of this second "transaction". This means, for example, that the second PERF_RECORD_AUX in every trace comes with TRUNCATED flag set. Setting attr.aux_watermark to quarter of the buffer gives enough space for the ->aux_tail update to be observed and prevents the data loss. perf parse-events: Make add PMU verbose output clearer On a CPU like skylakex an uncore_iio_0 PMU may alias with uncore_iio_free_running_0. The latter PMU doesn't support fc_mask as a parameter and so pmu_config_term fails. Typically parse_events_add_pmu is called in a loop where if one alias succeeds errors are ignored, however, if multiple errors occur parse_events__handle_error will currently give a WARN_ONCE. This change removes the WARN_ONCE in parse_events__handle_error and makes it a pr_debug. It adds verbose messages to parse_events_add_pmu warning that non-fatal errors may occur, while giving details on the pmu and config terms for useful context. pmu_config_term is altered so the failing term and pmu are present in the case of the 'unknown term' error which makes spotting the free_running case more straightforward. perf evlist: Adopt backwards ring buffer state enum As this isn't used at all in mmap.h but in evlist.h, so to cut down the header dependency tree, move it to where it is used. Also add mmap.h to the places using it but previously getting it indirectly via evlist.h. Add missing pthread.h to evlist.h, as it has a pthread_t struct member and was getting the header via mmap.h. Noticed while processing a Jiri's libperf batch touching mmap.h, where almost everything gets rebuilt because evlist.h is so popular, so cut down't this rebuild the world party. PT implicitly adds dummy event in perf tool. dummy event is software event which doesn't support LBR. Always setting no branch for dummy event in Intel PT. perf intel-pt: Fix occasional decoding errors when tracing system-wide In order to successfully decode Intel PT traces, context switch events are needed from the moment the trace starts. Currently that is ensured by using the 'immediate' flag which enables the switch event when it is opened. However, since commit 86c2786994bd ("perf intel-pt: Add support for PERF_RECORD_SWITCH") that might not always happen. When tracing system-wide the context switch event is added to the tracking event which was not set as 'immediate'. Change that so it is. perf subcmd: Create subcmd library Move the subcommand-related files from perf to a new library named libsubcmd.a. perf intel-pt: Add support for PERF_RECORD_SWITCH Add support for selecting and processing PERF_RECORD_SWITCH events for use by Intel PT. If they are available, they will be used in preference to sched_switch events. This enables an unprivileged user to trace multi-threaded or multi-process workloads with any level of perf_event_paranoid. However it depends on kernel support for PERF_RECORD_SWITCH. Without this patch, tracing a multi-threaded workload will decode without error but all the data will be attributed to the main thread. Without this patch, tracing a multi-process workload will result in decoder errors because the decoder will not know which executable is executing. perf tools: Add Intel PT support for using CYC packets CYC packets are a new Intel PT feature. CYC packets provide even finer grain timestamp information than MTC and TSC packets. A CYC packet contains the number of CPU cycles since the last CYC packet. Unlike MTC and TSC packets, CYC packets are only sent when another packet is also sent. Support for this feature is indicated by: /sys/bus/event_source/devices/intel_pt/caps/psb_cyc which contains "1" if the feature is supported and "0" otherwise. CYC packets can be requested using a PMU config term e.g. perf record -e intel_pt/cyc/u sleep 1 The frequency of CYC packets can also be specified. e.g. perf record -e intel_pt/cyc,cyc_thresh=2/u sleep 1 CYC packets are not requested by default. Valid cyc_thresh values are given by: /sys/bus/event_source/devices/intel_pt/caps/cycle_thresholds which contains a hexadecimal value, the bits of which represent valid values e.g. bit 2 set means value 2 is valid. The value represents the minimum number of CPU cycles that must have passed before a CYC packet can be sent. The number of CPU cycles is: 2 ^ (value - 1) e.g. value 4 means 8 CPU cycles must pass before a CYC packet can be sent. Note a CYC packet is still only sent when another packet is sent, not at, e.g. every 8 CPU cycles. If an invalid value is entered, the error message will give a list of valid values e.g. $ perf record -e intel_pt/cyc,cyc_thresh=15/u uname Invalid cyc_thresh for intel_pt. Valid values are: 0-12 tools/perf/Documentation/intel-pt.txt is updated in a later patch as there are a number of new features being added. perf tools: Pass Intel PT information for decoding MTC and CYC Record additional information in the AUXTRACE_INFO event in preparation for decoding MTC and CYC packets. Pass the information to the decoder. The AUXTRACE_INFO record can be extended by using the size to indicate the presence of new members. The additional information includes PMU config bit positions and the TSC to CTC (hardware crystal clock) ratio needed to decode MTC packets. This patch adds support for a new Intel PT feature that allows the frequency of PSB packets to be specified. Support for this feature is indicated by /sys/bus/event_source/devices/intel_pt/caps/psb_cyc which contains "1" if the feature is supported and "0" otherwise. The PSB period can be specified as a PMU config term e.g. perf record -e intel_pt/psb_period=2/u sleep 1 The default value is 3 or the nearest lower value that is supported. 0 is always supported. Valid values are given by: /sys/bus/event_source/devices/intel_pt/caps/psb_periods which contains a hexadecimal value, the bits of which represent valid values e.g. bit 2 set means value 2 is valid. The value is converted to the approximate number of trace bytes between PSB packets as: 2 ^ (value + 11) e.g. value 3 means 16KiB bytes between PSBs If an invalid value is entered, the error message will give a list of valid values e.g. $ perf record -e intel_pt/psb_period=15/u uname Invalid psb_period for intel_pt. perf tools: Add Intel PT support Add support for Intel Processor Trace. Intel PT support fits within the new auxtrace infrastructure. Recording is supporting by identifying the Intel PT PMU, parsing options and setting up events. Decoding is supported by queuing up trace data by cpu or thread and then decoding synchronously delivering synthesized event samples into the session processing for tools to consume.
