kbuild: unexport abs_srctree and abs_objtree Commit 25b146c5b8ce ("kbuild: allow Kbuild to start from any directory") exported abs_srctree and abs_objtree to avoid recomputation after the sub-make. However, this approach turned out to be fragile. Commit 5fa94ceb793e ("kbuild: set correct abs_srctree and abs_objtree for package builds") moved them above "ifneq ($(sub_make_done),1)", eliminating the need for exporting them. These are only needed in the top Makefile. If an absolute path is required in sub-directories, you can use $(abspath ) or $(realpath ) as needed. libbpf: Add BPF-side of USDT support Add BPF-side implementation of libbpf-provided USDT support. This consists of single header library, usdt.bpf.h, which is meant to be used from user's BPF-side source code. This header is added to the list of installed libbpf header, along bpf_helpers.h and others. BPF-side implementation consists of two BPF maps: - spec map, which contains "a USDT spec" which encodes information necessary to be able to fetch USDT arguments and other information (argument count, user-provided cookie value, etc) at runtime; - IP-to-spec-ID map, which is only used on kernels that don't support BPF cookie feature. It allows to lookup spec ID based on the place in user application that triggers USDT program. These maps have default sizes, 256 and 1024, which are chosen conservatively to not waste a lot of space, but handling a lot of common cases. But there could be cases when user application needs to either trace a lot of different USDTs, or USDTs are heavily inlined and their arguments are located in a lot of differing locations. For such cases it might be necessary to size those maps up, which libbpf allows to do by overriding BPF_USDT_MAX_SPEC_CNT and BPF_USDT_MAX_IP_CNT macros. It is an important aspect to keep in mind. Single USDT (user-space equivalent of kernel tracepoint) can have multiple USDT "call sites". That is, single logical USDT is triggered from multiple places in user application. This can happen due to function inlining. Each such inlined instance of USDT invocation can have its own unique USDT argument specification (instructions about the location of the value of each of USDT arguments). So while USDT looks very similar to usual uprobe or kernel tracepoint, under the hood it's actually a collection of uprobes, each potentially needing different spec to know how to fetch arguments. User-visible API consists of three helper functions: - bpf_usdt_arg_cnt(), which returns number of arguments of current USDT; - bpf_usdt_arg(), which reads value of specified USDT argument (by it's zero-indexed position) and returns it as 64-bit value; - bpf_usdt_cookie(), which functions like BPF cookie for USDT programs; this is necessary as libbpf doesn't allow specifying actual BPF cookie and utilizes it internally for USDT support implementation. Each bpf_usdt_xxx() APIs expect struct pt_regs * context, passed into BPF program. On kernels that don't support BPF cookie it is used to fetch absolute IP address of the underlying uprobe. usdt.bpf.h also provides BPF_USDT() macro, which functions like BPF_PROG() and BPF_KPROBE() and allows much more user-friendly way to get access to USDT arguments, if USDT definition is static and known to the user. It is expected that majority of use cases won't have to use bpf_usdt_arg_cnt() and bpf_usdt_arg() directly and BPF_USDT() will cover all their needs. Last, usdt.bpf.h is utilizing BPF CO-RE for one single purpose: to detect kernel support for BPF cookie. If BPF CO-RE dependency is undesirable, user application can redefine BPF_USDT_HAS_BPF_COOKIE to either a boolean constant (or equivalently zero and non-zero), or even point it to its own .rodata variable that can be specified from user's application user-space code. It is important that BPF_USDT_HAS_BPF_COOKIE is known to BPF verifier as static value (thus .rodata and not just .data), as otherwise BPF code will still contain bpf_get_attach_cookie() BPF helper call and will fail validation at runtime, if not dead-code eliminated. bpf: Use $(pound) instead of \# in Makefiles Recent-ish versions of make do no longer consider number signs ("#") as comment symbols when they are inserted inside of a macro reference or in a function invocation. In such cases, the symbols should not be escaped. There are a few occurrences of "\#" in libbpf's and samples' Makefiles. In the former, the backslash is harmless, because grep associates no particular meaning to the escaped symbol and reads it as a regular "#". In samples' Makefile, recent versions of make will pass the backslash down to the compiler, making the probe fail all the time and resulting in the display of a warning about "make headers_install" being required, even after headers have been installed. A similar issue has been addressed at some other locations by commit 9564a8cf422d ("Kbuild: fix # escaping in .cmd files for future Make"). Let's address it for libbpf's and samples' Makefiles in the same fashion, by using a "$(pound)" variable (pulled from tools/scripts/Makefile.include for libbpf, or re-defined for the samples). libbpf: Make libbpf_version.h non-auto-generated Turn previously auto-generated libbpf_version.h header into a normal header file. This prevents various tricky Makefile integration issues, simplifies the overall build process, but also allows to further extend it with some more versioning-related APIs in the future. To prevent accidental out-of-sync versions as defined by libbpf.map and libbpf_version.h, Makefile checks their consistency at build time. Simultaneously with this change bump libbpf.map to v0.6. Also undo adding libbpf's output directory into include path for kernel/bpf/preload, bpftool, and resolve_btfids, which is not necessary because libbpf_version.h is just a normal header like any other. libbpf: Add LIBBPF_DEPRECATED_SINCE macro for scheduling API deprecations Introduce a macro LIBBPF_DEPRECATED_SINCE(major, minor, message) to prepare the deprecation of two API functions. This macro marks functions as deprecated when libbpf's version reaches the values passed as an argument. As part of this change libbpf_version.h header is added with recorded major (LIBBPF_MAJOR_VERSION) and minor (LIBBPF_MINOR_VERSION) libbpf version macros. They are now part of libbpf public API and can be relied upon by user code. libbpf_version.h is installed system-wide along other libbpf public headers. Due to this new build-time auto-generated header, in-kernel applications relying on libbpf (resolve_btfids, bpftool, bpf_preload) are updated to include libbpf's output directory as part of a list of include search paths. Better fix would be to use libbpf's make_install target to install public API headers, but that clean up is left out as a future improvement. The build changes were tested by building kernel (with KBUILD_OUTPUT and O= specified explicitly), bpftool, libbpf, selftests/bpf, and resolve_btfids builds. No problems were detected. Note that because of the constraints of the C preprocessor we have to write a few lines of macro magic for each version used to prepare deprecation (0.6 for now). Also, use LIBBPF_DEPRECATED_SINCE() to schedule deprecation of btf__get_from_id() and btf__load(), which are replaced by btf__load_from_kernel_by_id() and btf__load_into_kernel(), respectively, starting from future libbpf v0.6. libbpf: Stop using feature-detection Makefiles Libbpf's Makefile relies on Linux tools infrastructure's feature detection framework, but libbpf's needs are very modest: it detects the presence of libelf and libz, both of which are mandatory. So it doesn't benefit much from the framework, but pays significant costs in terms of maintainability and debugging experience, when something goes wrong. The other feature detector, testing for the presernce of minimal BPF API in system headers is long obsolete as well, providing no value. So stop using feature detection and just assume the presence of libelf and libz during build time. Worst case, user will get a clear and actionable linker error, e.g.: /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lelf On the other hand, we completely bypass recurring issues various users reported over time with false negatives of feature detection (libelf or libz not being detected, while they are actually present in the system). libbpf: Fix VERSIONED_SYM_COUNT number parsing We remove "other info" from "readelf -s --wide" output when parsing GLOBAL_SYM_COUNT variable, which was added in [1]. But we don't do that for VERSIONED_SYM_COUNT and it's failing the check_abi target on powerpc Fedora 33. The extra "other info" wasn't problem for VERSIONED_SYM_COUNT parsing until commit [2] added awk in the pipe, which assumes that the last column is symbol, but it can be "other info". Adding "other info" removal for VERSIONED_SYM_COUNT the same way as we did for GLOBAL_SYM_COUNT parsing. tools, bpf/build: Cleanup feature files on make clean The system for "Auto-detecting system features" located under tools/build/ are (currently) used by perf, libbpf and bpftool. It can contain stalled feature detection files, which are not cleaned up by libbpf and bpftool on make clean (side-note: perf tool is correct). Fix this by making the users invoke the make clean target. Some details about the changes. The libbpf Makefile already had a clean-config target (which seems to be copy-pasted from perf), but this target was not "connected" (a make dependency) to clean target. Choose not to rename target as someone might be using it. Did change the output from "CLEAN config" to "CLEAN feature-detect", to make it more clear what happens. All this complicates build of libbpf unnecessarily and is just a maintenance burden. Instead, it's trivial to implement libbpf-specific internal version and use it throughout libbpf. libbpf: Support libbpf-provided extern variables Add support for extern variables, provided to BPF program by libbpf. Currently the following extern variables are supported: - LINUX_KERNEL_VERSION; version of a kernel in which BPF program is executing, follows KERNEL_VERSION() macro convention, can be 4- and 8-byte long; - CONFIG_xxx values; a set of values of actual kernel config. Tristate, boolean, strings, and integer values are supported. Set of possible values is determined by declared type of extern variable. Supported types of variables are: - Tristate values. Are represented as `enum libbpf_tristate`. Accepted values are **strictly** 'y', 'n', or 'm', which are represented as TRI_YES, TRI_NO, or TRI_MODULE, respectively. - Boolean values. Are represented as bool (_Bool) types. Accepted values are 'y' and 'n' only, turning into true/false values, respectively. - Single-character values. Can be used both as a substritute for bool/tristate, or as a small-range integer: - 'y'/'n'/'m' are represented as is, as characters 'y', 'n', or 'm'; - integers in a range [-128, 127] or [0, 255] (depending on signedness of char in target architecture) are recognized and represented with respective values of char type. - Strings. String values are declared as fixed-length char arrays. String of up to that length will be accepted and put in first N bytes of char array, with the rest of bytes zeroed out. If config string value is longer than space alloted, it will be truncated and warning message emitted. Char array is always zero terminated. String literals in config have to be enclosed in double quotes, just like C-style string literals. - Integers. 8-, 16-, 32-, and 64-bit integers are supported, both signed and unsigned variants. Libbpf enforces parsed config value to be in the supported range of corresponding integer type. Integers values in config can be: - decimal integers, with optional + and - signs; - hexadecimal integers, prefixed with 0x or 0X; - octal integers, starting with 0. Config file itself is searched in /boot/config-$(uname -r) location with fallback to /proc/config.gz, unless config path is specified explicitly through bpf_object_open_opts' kernel_config_path option. Both gzipped and plain text formats are supported. Libbpf adds explicit dependency on zlib because of this, but this shouldn't be a problem, given libelf already depends on zlib. All detected extern variables, are put into a separate .extern internal map. It, similarly to .rodata map, is marked as read-only from BPF program side, as well as is frozen on load. This allows BPF verifier to track extern values as constants and perform enhanced branch prediction and dead code elimination. This can be relied upon for doing kernel version/feature detection and using potentially unsupported field relocations or BPF helpers in a CO-RE-based BPF program, while still having a single version of BPF program running on old and new kernels. Selftests are validating this explicitly for unexisting BPF helper. libbpf: handle symbol versioning properly for libbpf.a bcc uses libbpf repo as a submodule. It brings in libbpf source code and builds everything together to produce shared libraries. With latest libbpf, I got the following errors: /bin/ld: libbcc_bpf.so.0.10.0: version node not found for symbol xsk_umem__create@LIBBPF_0.0.2 /bin/ld: failed to set dynamic section sizes: Bad value collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status make[2]: *** [src/cc/libbcc_bpf.so.0.10.0] Error 1 In xsk.c, we have asm(".symver xsk_umem__create_v0_0_2, xsk_umem__create@LIBBPF_0.0.2"); asm(".symver xsk_umem__create_v0_0_4, xsk_umem__create@@LIBBPF_0.0.4"); The linker thinks the built is for LIBBPF but cannot find proper version LIBBPF_0.0.2/4, so emit errors. I also confirmed that using libbpf.a to produce a shared library also has issues: -bash-4.4$ cat t.c extern void *xsk_umem__create; void * test() { return xsk_umem__create; } -bash-4.4$ gcc -c -fPIC t.c -bash-4.4$ gcc -shared t.o libbpf.a -o t.so /bin/ld: t.so: version node not found for symbol xsk_umem__create@LIBBPF_0.0.2 /bin/ld: failed to set dynamic section sizes: Bad value collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status -bash-4.4$ Symbol versioning does happens in commonly used libraries, e.g., elfutils and glibc. libbpf: make libbpf.map source of truth for libbpf version Currently libbpf version is specified in 2 places: libbpf.map and Makefile. They easily get out of sync and it's very easy to update one, but forget to update another one. In addition, Github projection of libbpf has to maintain its own version which has to be remembered to be kept in sync manually, which is very error-prone approach. This patch makes libbpf.map a source of truth for libbpf version and uses shell invocation to parse out correct full and major libbpf version to use during build. Now we need to make sure that once new release cycle starts, we need to add (initially) empty section to libbpf.map with correct latest version. This also will make it possible to keep Github projection consistent with kernel sources version of libbpf by adopting similar parsing of version from libbpf.map. v2->v3: - grep -o + sort -rV (Andrey); v1->v2: - eager version vars evaluation (Jakub); - simplified version regex (Andrey); Cc: Andrey Ignatov <rdna@fb.com> Signed-off-by: Andrii Nakryiko <andriin@fb.com> Acked-by: Andrey Ignatov <rdna@fb.com> Signed-off-by: Alexei Starovoitov <ast@kernel.org>

libbpf: add bpf_object__load_xattr() API function to pass log_level libbpf was recently made aware of the log_level attribute for programs, used to specify the level of information expected to be dumped by the verifier. Function bpf_prog_load_xattr() got support for this log_level parameter. But some applications using libbpf rely on another function to load programs, bpf_object__load(), which does accept any parameter for log level. Create an API function based on bpf_object__load(), but accepting an "attr" object as a parameter. Then add a log_level field to that object, so that applications calling the new bpf_object__load_xattr() can pick the desired log level. v3: - Rewrite commit log. v2: - We are in a new cycle, bump libbpf extraversion number. bpf, libbpf: support global data/bss/rodata sections This work adds BPF loader support for global data sections to libbpf. This allows to write BPF programs in more natural C-like way by being able to define global variables and const data. Back at LPC 2018 [0] we presented a first prototype which implemented support for global data sections by extending BPF syscall where union bpf_attr would get additional memory/size pair for each section passed during prog load in order to later add this base address into the ldimm64 instruction along with the user provided offset when accessing a variable. Consensus from LPC was that for proper upstream support, it would be more desirable to use maps instead of bpf_attr extension as this would allow for introspection of these sections as well as potential live updates of their content. This work follows this path by taking the following steps from loader side: 1) In bpf_object__elf_collect() step we pick up ".data", ".rodata", and ".bss" section information. 2) If present, in bpf_object__init_internal_map() we add maps to the obj's map array that corresponds to each of the present sections. Given section size and access properties can differ, a single entry array map is created with value size that is corresponding to the ELF section size of .data, .bss or .rodata. These internal maps are integrated into the normal map handling of libbpf such that when user traverses all obj maps, they can be differentiated from user-created ones via bpf_map__is_internal(). In later steps when we actually create these maps in the kernel via bpf_object__create_maps(), then for .data and .rodata sections their content is copied into the map through bpf_map_update_elem(). For .bss this is not necessary since array map is already zero-initialized by default. Additionally, for .rodata the map is frozen as read-only after setup, such that neither from program nor syscall side writes would be possible. 3) In bpf_program__collect_reloc() step, we record the corresponding map, insn index, and relocation type for the global data. 4) And last but not least in the actual relocation step in bpf_program__relocate(), we mark the ldimm64 instruction with src_reg = BPF_PSEUDO_MAP_VALUE where in the first imm field the map's file descriptor is stored as similarly done as in BPF_PSEUDO_MAP_FD, and in the second imm field (as ldimm64 is 2-insn wide) we store the access offset into the section. Given these maps have only single element ldimm64's off remains zero in both parts. 5) On kernel side, this special marked BPF_PSEUDO_MAP_VALUE load will then store the actual target address in order to have a 'map-lookup'-free access. That is, the actual map value base address + offset. The destination register in the verifier will then be marked as PTR_TO_MAP_VALUE, containing the fixed offset as reg->off and backing BPF map as reg->map_ptr. Meaning, it's treated as any other normal map value from verification side, only with efficient, direct value access instead of actual call to map lookup helper as in the typical case. Currently, only support for static global variables has been added, and libbpf rejects non-static global variables from loading. This can be lifted until we have proper semantics for how BPF will treat multi-object BPF loads. From BTF side, libbpf will set the value type id of the types corresponding to the ".bss", ".data" and ".rodata" names which LLVM will emit without the object name prefix. The key type will be left as zero, thus making use of the key-less BTF option in array maps. Simple example dump of program using globals vars in each section: # bpftool prog [...] 6784: sched_cls name load_static_dat tag a7e1291567277844 gpl loaded_at 2019-03-11T15:39:34+0000 uid 0 xlated 1776B jited 993B memlock 4096B map_ids 2238,2237,2235,2236,2239,2240 # bpftool map show id 2237 2237: array name test_glo.bss flags 0x0 key 4B value 64B max_entries 1 memlock 4096B # bpftool map show id 2235 2235: array name test_glo.data flags 0x0 key 4B value 64B max_entries 1 memlock 4096B # bpftool map show id 2236 2236: array name test_glo.rodata flags 0x80 key 4B value 96B max_entries 1 memlock 4096B # bpftool prog dump xlated id 6784 int load_static_data(struct __sk_buff * skb): ; int load_static_data(struct __sk_buff *skb) 0: (b7) r6 = 0 ; test_reloc(number, 0, &num0); 1: (63) *(u32 *)(r10 -4) = r6 2: (bf) r2 = r10 ; int load_static_data(struct __sk_buff *skb) 3: (07) r2 += -4 ; test_reloc(number, 0, &num0); 4: (18) r1 = map[id:2238] 6: (18) r3 = map[id:2237][0]+0 <-- direct addr in .bss area 8: (b7) r4 = 0 9: (85) call array_map_update_elem#100464 10: (b7) r1 = 1 ; test_reloc(number, 1, &num1); [...] ; test_reloc(string, 2, str2); 120: (18) r8 = map[id:2237][0]+16 <-- same here at offset +16 122: (18) r1 = map[id:2239] 124: (18) r3 = map[id:2237][0]+16 126: (b7) r4 = 0 127: (85) call array_map_update_elem#100464 128: (b7) r1 = 120 ; str1[5] = 'x'; 129: (73) *(u8 *)(r9 +5) = r1 ; test_reloc(string, 3, str1); 130: (b7) r1 = 3 131: (63) *(u32 *)(r10 -4) = r1 132: (b7) r9 = 3 133: (bf) r2 = r10 ; int load_static_data(struct __sk_buff *skb) 134: (07) r2 += -4 ; test_reloc(string, 3, str1); 135: (18) r1 = map[id:2239] 137: (18) r3 = map[id:2235][0]+16 <-- direct addr in .data area 139: (b7) r4 = 0 140: (85) call array_map_update_elem#100464 141: (b7) r1 = 111 ; __builtin_memcpy(&str2[2], "hello", sizeof("hello")); 142: (73) *(u8 *)(r8 +6) = r1 <-- further access based on .bss data 143: (b7) r1 = 108 144: (73) *(u8 *)(r8 +5) = r1 [...] For Cilium use-case in particular, this enables migrating configuration constants from Cilium daemon's generated header defines into global data sections such that expensive runtime recompilations with LLVM can be avoided altogether. Instead, the ELF file becomes effectively a "template", meaning, it is compiled only once (!) and the Cilium daemon will then rewrite relevant configuration data from the ELF's .data or .rodata sections directly instead of recompiling the program. The updated ELF is then loaded into the kernel and atomically replaces the existing program in the networking datapath. More info in [0]. libbpf: add libelf dependency to shared library build The DPDK project is moving forward with its AF_XDP PMD, and during that process some libbpf issues surfaced [1]: When libbpf was built as a shared library, libelf was not included in the linking phase. bpf, libbpf: fix version info and add it to shared object Even though libbpf's versioning script for the linker (libbpf.map) is pointing to 0.0.2, the BPF_EXTRAVERSION in the Makefile has not been updated along with it and is therefore still on 0.0.1. While fixing up, I also noticed that the generated shared object versioning information is missing, typical convention is to have a linker name (libbpf.so), soname (libbpf.so.0) and real name (libbpf.so.0.0.2) for library management. This is based upon the LIBBPF_VERSION as well. The build will then produce the following bpf libraries: # ll libbpf* libbpf.a libbpf.so -> libbpf.so.0.0.2 libbpf.so.0 -> libbpf.so.0.0.2 libbpf.so.0.0.2 # readelf -d libbpf.so.0.0.2 | grep SONAME 0x000000000000000e (SONAME) Library soname: [libbpf.so.0] And install them accordingly: # rm -rf /tmp/bld; mkdir /tmp/bld; make -j$(nproc) O=/tmp/bld install Auto-detecting system features: ... libelf: [ on ] ... bpf: [ on ] CC /tmp/bld/libbpf.o CC /tmp/bld/bpf.o CC /tmp/bld/nlattr.o CC /tmp/bld/btf.o CC /tmp/bld/libbpf_errno.o CC /tmp/bld/str_error.o CC /tmp/bld/netlink.o CC /tmp/bld/bpf_prog_linfo.o CC /tmp/bld/libbpf_probes.o CC /tmp/bld/xsk.o LD /tmp/bld/libbpf-in.o LINK /tmp/bld/libbpf.a LINK /tmp/bld/libbpf.so.0.0.2 LINK /tmp/bld/test_libbpf INSTALL /tmp/bld/libbpf.a INSTALL /tmp/bld/libbpf.so.0.0.2 # ll /usr/local/lib64/libbpf.* /usr/local/lib64/libbpf.a /usr/local/lib64/libbpf.so -> libbpf.so.0.0.2 /usr/local/lib64/libbpf.so.0 -> libbpf.so.0.0.2 /usr/local/lib64/libbpf.so.0.0.2 Fixes: 1bf4b05810fe ("tools: bpftool: add probes for eBPF program types") Fixes: 1b76c13e4b36 ("bpf tools: Introduce 'bpf' library and add bpf feature check") Reported-by: Stanislav Fomichev <sdf@google.com> Signed-off-by: Daniel Borkmann <daniel@iogearbox.net> Signed-off-by: Alexei Starovoitov <ast@kernel.org>

libbpf: add support for using AF_XDP sockets This commit adds AF_XDP support to libbpf. The main reason for this is to facilitate writing applications that use AF_XDP by offering higher-level APIs that hide many of the details of the AF_XDP uapi. This is in the same vein as libbpf facilitates XDP adoption by offering easy-to-use higher level interfaces of XDP functionality. Hopefully this will facilitate adoption of AF_XDP, make applications using it simpler and smaller, and finally also make it possible for applications to benefit from optimizations in the AF_XDP user space access code. Previously, people just copied and pasted the code from the sample application into their application, which is not desirable. The interface is composed of two parts: * Low-level access interface to the four rings and the packet * High-level control plane interface for creating and setting up umems and af_xdp sockets as well as a simple XDP program. libbpf: Verify versioned symbols Since ABI versioning info is kept separately from the code it's easy to forget to update it while adding a new API. Add simple verification that all global symbols exported with LIBBPF_API are versioned in libbpf.map version script. The idea is to check that number of global symbols in libbpf-in.o, that is the input to the linker, matches with number of unique versioned symbols in libbpf.so, that is the output of the linker. If these numbers don't match, it may mean some symbol was not versioned and make will fail. "Unique" means that if a symbol is present in more than one version of ABI due to ABI changes, it'll be counted once. Another option to calculate number of global symbols in the "input" could be to count number of LIBBPF_ABI entries in C headers but it seems to be fragile. Example of output when a symbol is missing in version script: ... LD libbpf-in.o LINK libbpf.a LINK libbpf.so Warning: Num of global symbols in libbpf-in.o (115) does NOT match with num of versioned symbols in libbpf.so (114). libbpf: Add version script for DSO More and more projects use libbpf and one day it'll likely be packaged and distributed as DSO and that requires ABI versioning so that both compatible and incompatible changes to ABI can be introduced in a safe way in the future without breaking executables dynamically linked with a previous version of the library. Usual way to do ABI versioning is version script for the linker. Add such a script for libbpf. All global symbols currently exported via LIBBPF_API macro are added to the version script libbpf.map. The version name LIBBPF_0.0.1 is constructed from the name of the library + version specified by $(LIBBPF_VERSION) in Makefile. Version script does not duplicate the work done by LIBBPF_API macro, it rather complements it. The macro is used at compile time and can be used by compiler to do optimization that can't be done at link time, it is purely about global symbol visibility. The version script, in turn, is used at link time and takes care of ABI versioning. Both techniques are described in details in [1]. Whenever ABI is changed in the future, version script should be changed appropriately. libbpf: Per-symbol visibility for DSO Make global symbols in libbpf DSO hidden by default with -fvisibility=hidden and export symbols that are part of ABI explicitly with __attribute__((visibility("default"))). This is common practice that should prevent from accidentally exporting a symbol, that is not supposed to be a part of ABI what, in turn, improves both libbpf developer- and user-experiences. See [1] for more details. Export control becomes more important since more and more projects use libbpf. The patch doesn't export a bunch of netlink related functions since as agreed in [2] they'll be reworked. That doesn't break bpftool since bpftool links libbpf statically. License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. tools lib bpf: Use FEATURE_USER to allow building in the same dir as perf When building tools/lib/bpf as part of the tools/perf/ build process, which will happend when we introduce a patch wiring that up, we end up stomping on the feature detection caching mechanism, that uses a file in the output directory (O=) that is shared by libbpf and perf to check if something changed from one build to another that requires redoing the feature detection process. Due to another recently bug fixed in the tools/build/ infrastructure ("tools build: Fixup feature detection display function name") the results for the entries in the FEATURE_DISPLAY, for this case, were appearing as all succeeding, when two of them (the ones only on the DISPLAY) were not even being performed. bpf tools: Introduce 'bpf' library and add bpf feature check This is the first patch of libbpf. The goal of libbpf is to create a standard way for accessing eBPF object files. This patch creates 'Makefile' and 'Build' for it, allows 'make' to build libbpf.a and libbpf.so, 'make install' to put them into proper directories. Most part of Makefile is borrowed from traceevent. Before building, it checks the existence of libelf in Makefile, and deny to build if not found. Instead of throwing an error if libelf not found, the error raises in a phony target "elfdep". This design is to ensure 'make clean' still workable even if libelf is not found. Because libbpf requires 'kern_version' field set for 'union bpf_attr' (bpfdep" is used for that dependency), Kernel BPF API is also checked by intruducing a new feature check 'bpf' into tools/build/feature, which checks the existence and version of linux/bpf.h. When building libbpf, it searches that file from include/uapi/linux in kernel source tree (controlled by FEATURE_CHECK_CFLAGS-bpf). Since it searches kernel source tree it reside, installing of newest kernel headers is not required, except we are trying to port these files to an old kernel. To avoid checking that file when perf building, the newly introduced 'bpf' feature check doesn't added into FEATURE_TESTS and FEATURE_DISPLAY by default in tools/build/Makefile.feature, but added into libbpf's specific.
