fbdev: Make support for userspace interfaces configurable Add Kconfig option CONFIG_FB_DEVICE and make the virtual fbdev device optional. If the new option has not been selected, fbdev does not create files in devfs, sysfs or procfs. Most modern Linux systems run a DRM-based graphics stack that uses the kernel's framebuffer console, but has otherwise deprecated fbdev support. Yet fbdev userspace interfaces are still present. The option makes it possible to use the fbdev subsystem as console implementation without support for userspace. This closes potential entry points to manipulate kernel or I/O memory via framebuffers. It also prevents the execution of driver code via ioctl or sysfs, both of which might allow malicious software to exploit bugs in the fbdev code. A small number of fbdev drivers require struct fbinfo.dev to be initialized, usually for the support of sysfs interface. Make these drivers depend on FB_DEVICE. They can later be fixed if necessary. v3: * effect -> affect in Kconfig help (Daniel) v2: * set FB_DEVICE default to y (Geert) * comment on {get,put}_device() (Sam) * Kconfig fixes (Sam) * add TODO item about FB_DEVICE dependencies (Sam) Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Acked-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org> Reviewed-by: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20230613110953.24176-39-tzimmermann@suse.de

fbdev: Move framebuffer I/O helpers into <asm/fb.h> Implement framebuffer I/O helpers, such as fb_read*() and fb_write*(), in the architecture's <asm/fb.h> header file or the generic one. The common case has been the use of regular I/O functions, such as __raw_readb() or memset_io(). A few architectures used plain system- memory reads and writes. Sparc used helpers for its SBus. fbdev: Fix incorrect page mapping clearance at fb_deferred_io_release() The recent fix for the deferred I/O by the commit 3efc61d95259 ("fbdev: Fix invalid page access after closing deferred I/O devices") caused a regression when the same fb device is opened/closed while it's being used. It resulted in a frozen screen even if something is redrawn there after the close. The breakage is because the patch was made under a wrong assumption of a single open; in the current code, fb_deferred_io_release() cleans up the page mapping of the pageref list and it calls cancel_delayed_work_sync() unconditionally, where both are no correct behavior for multiple opens. This patch adds a refcount for the opens of the device, and applies the cleanup only when all files get closed. As both fb_deferred_io_open() and _close() are called always in the fb_info lock (mutex), it's safe to use the normal int for the refcounting. Also, a useless BUG_ON() is dropped. fbdev: Add support for the nomodeset kernel parameter Support the kernel's nomodeset parameter for all PCI-based fbdev drivers that use aperture helpers to remove other, hardware-agnostic graphics drivers. The parameter is a simple way of using the firmware-provided scanout buffer if the hardware's native driver is broken. The same effect could be achieved with per-driver options, but the importance of the graphics output for many users makes a single, unified approach worthwhile. With nomodeset specified, the fbdev driver module will not load. This unifies behavior with similar DRM drivers. In DRM helpers, modules first check the nomodeset parameter before registering the PCI driver. As fbdev has no such module helpers, we have to modify each driver individually. The name 'nomodeset' is slightly misleading, but has been chosen for historical reasons. Several drivers implemented it before it became a general option for DRM. So keeping the existing name was preferred over introducing a new one. v2: * print a warning if a driver does not init (Helge) * wrap video_firmware_drivers_only() in helper Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Reviewed-by: Javier Martinez Canillas <javierm@redhat.com> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20221111133024.9897-3-tzimmermann@suse.de

drm/fb-helper: Schedule deferred-I/O worker after writing to framebuffer Schedule the deferred-I/O worker instead of the damage worker after writing to the fbdev framebuffer. The deferred-I/O worker then performs the dirty-fb update. The fbdev emulation will initialize deferred I/O for all drivers that require damage updates. It is therefore a valid assumption that the deferred-I/O worker is present. It would be possible to perform the damage handling directly from within the write operation. But doing this could increase the overhead of the write or interfere with a concurrently scheduled deferred-I/O worker. Instead, scheduling the deferred-I/O worker with its regular delay of 50 ms removes load off the write operation and allows the deferred-I/O worker to handle multiple write operations that arrived during the delay time window. v3: * remove unused variable (lkp) v2: * keep drm_fb_helper_damage() (Daniel) * use fb_deferred_io_schedule_flush() (Daniel) * clarify comments (Daniel) Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Reviewed-by: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20221115115819.23088-6-tzimmermann@suse.de

fbdev: Restart conflicting fb removal loop when unregistering devices Drivers that want to remove registered conflicting framebuffers prior to register their own framebuffer, call to remove_conflicting_framebuffers(). This function takes the registration_lock mutex, to prevent a race when drivers register framebuffer devices. But if a conflicting framebuffer device is found, the underlaying platform device is unregistered and this will lead to the platform driver .remove callback to be called. Which in turn will call to unregister_framebuffer() that takes the same lock. To prevent this, a struct fb_info.forced_out field was used as indication to unregister_framebuffer() whether the mutex has to be grabbed or not. But this could be unsafe, since the fbdev core is making assumptions about what drivers may or may not do in their .remove callbacks. Allowing to run these callbacks with the registration_lock held can cause deadlocks, since the fbdev core has no control over what drivers do in their removal path. A better solution is to drop the lock before platform_device_unregister(), so unregister_framebuffer() can take it when called from the fbdev driver. The lock is acquired again after the device has been unregistered and at this point the removal loop can be restarted. Since the conflicting framebuffer device has already been removed, the loop would just finish when no more conflicting framebuffers are found. fbdev: Track deferred-I/O pages in pageref struct Store the per-page state for fbdev's deferred I/O in struct fb_deferred_io_pageref. Maintain a list of pagerefs for the pages that have to be written back to video memory. Update all affected drivers. As with pages before, fbdev acquires a pageref when an mmaped page of the framebuffer is being written to. It holds the pageref in a list of all currently written pagerefs until it flushes the written pages to video memory. Writeback occurs periodically. After writeback fbdev releases all pagerefs and builds up a new dirty list until the next writeback occurs. Using pagerefs has a number of benefits. For pages of the framebuffer, the deferred I/O code used struct page.lru as an entry into the list of dirty pages. The lru field is owned by the page cache, which makes deferred I/O incompatible with some memory pages (e.g., most notably DRM's GEM SHMEM allocator). struct fb_deferred_io_pageref now provides an entry into a list of dirty framebuffer pages, freeing lru for use with the page cache. Drivers also assumed that struct page.index is the page offset into the framebuffer. This is not true for DRM buffers, which are located at various offset within a mapped area. struct fb_deferred_io_pageref explicitly stores an offset into the framebuffer. struct page.index is now only the page offset into the mapped area. These changes will allow DRM to use fbdev deferred I/O without an intermediate shadow buffer. v3: * use pageref->offset for sorting * fix grammar in comment v2: * minor fixes in commit message Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Reviewed-by: Javier Martinez Canillas <javierm@redhat.com> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20220429100834.18898-3-tzimmermann@suse.de

fbdev: Don't sort deferred-I/O pages by default Fbdev's deferred I/O sorts all dirty pages by default, which incurs a significant overhead. Make the sorting step optional and update the few drivers that require it. Use a FIFO list by default. Most fbdev drivers with deferred I/O build a bounding rectangle around the dirty pages or simply flush the whole screen. The only two affected DRM drivers, generic fbdev and vmwgfx, both use a bounding rectangle. In those cases, the exact order of the pages doesn't matter. The other drivers look at the page index or handle pages one-by-one. The patch sets the sort_pagelist flag for those, even though some of them would probably work correctly without sorting. Driver maintainers should update their driver accordingly. Sorting pages by memory offset for deferred I/O performs an implicit bubble-sort step on the list of dirty pages. The algorithm goes through the list of dirty pages and inserts each new page according to its index field. Even worse, list traversal always starts at the first entry. As video memory is most likely updated scanline by scanline, the algorithm traverses through the complete list for each updated page. For example, with 1024x768x32bpp each page covers exactly one scanline. Writing a single screen update from top to bottom requires updating 768 pages. With an average list length of 384 entries, a screen update creates (768 * 384 =) 294912 compare operation. Fix this by making the sorting step opt-in and update the few drivers that require it. All other drivers work with unsorted page lists. Pages are appended to the list. Therefore, in the common case of writing the framebuffer top to bottom, pages are still sorted by offset, which may have a positive effect on performance. Playing a video [1] in mplayer's benchmark mode shows the difference (i7-4790, FullHD, simpledrm, kernel with debugging). mplayer -benchmark -nosound -vo fbdev ./big_buck_bunny_720p_stereo.ogg With sorted page lists: BENCHMARKs: VC: 32.960s VO: 73.068s A: 0.000s Sys: 2.413s = 108.441s BENCHMARK%: VC: 30.3947% VO: 67.3802% A: 0.0000% Sys: 2.2251% = 100.0000% With unsorted page lists: BENCHMARKs: VC: 31.005s VO: 42.889s A: 0.000s Sys: 2.256s = 76.150s BENCHMARK%: VC: 40.7156% VO: 56.3219% A: 0.0000% Sys: 2.9625% = 100.0000% VC shows the overhead of video decoding, VO shows the overhead of the video output. fbdev: Hot-unplug firmware fb devices on forced removal Hot-unplug all firmware-framebuffer devices as part of removing them via remove_conflicting_framebuffers() et al. Releases all memory regions to be acquired by native drivers. Firmware, such as EFI, install a framebuffer while posting the computer. After removing the firmware-framebuffer device from fbdev, a native driver takes over the hardware and the firmware framebuffer becomes invalid. Firmware-framebuffer drivers, specifically simplefb, don't release their device from Linux' device hierarchy. It still owns the firmware framebuffer and blocks the native drivers from loading. This has been observed in the vmwgfx driver. Revert "fbdev: Garbage collect fbdev scrolling acceleration, part 1 (from TODO list)" This reverts commit b3ec8cdf457e5e63d396fe1346cc788cf7c1b578. Revert the second (of 2) commits which disabled scrolling acceleration in fbcon/fbdev. It introduced a regression for fbdev-supported graphic cards because of the performance penalty by doing screen scrolling by software instead of using the existing graphic card 2D hardware acceleration. Console scrolling acceleration was disabled by dropping code which checked at runtime the driver hardware capabilities for the BINFO_HWACCEL_COPYAREA or FBINFO_HWACCEL_FILLRECT flags and if set, it enabled scrollmode SCROLL_MOVE which uses hardware acceleration to move screen contents. After dropping those checks scrollmode was hard-wired to SCROLL_REDRAW instead, which forces all graphic cards to redraw every character at the new screen position when scrolling. This change effectively disabled all hardware-based scrolling acceleration for ALL drivers, because now all kind of 2D hardware acceleration (bitblt, fillrect) in the drivers isn't used any longer. The original commit message mentions that only 3 DRM drivers (nouveau, omapdrm and gma500) used hardware acceleration in the past and thus code for checking and using scrolling acceleration is obsolete. This statement is NOT TRUE, because beside the DRM drivers there are around 35 other fbdev drivers which depend on fbdev/fbcon and still provide hardware acceleration for fbdev/fbcon. The original commit message also states that syzbot found lots of bugs in fbcon and thus it's "often the solution to just delete code and remove features". This is true, and the bugs - which actually affected all users of fbcon, including DRM - were fixed, or code was dropped like e.g. the support for software scrollback in vgacon (commit 973c096f6a85). So to further analyze which bugs were found by syzbot, I've looked through all patches in drivers/video which were tagged with syzbot or syzkaller back to year 2005. The vast majority fixed the reported issues on a higher level, e.g. when screen is to be resized, or when font size is to be changed. The few ones which touched driver code fixed a real driver bug, e.g. by adding a check. But NONE of those patches touched code of either the SCROLL_MOVE or the SCROLL_REDRAW case. That means, there was no real reason why SCROLL_MOVE had to be ripped-out and just SCROLL_REDRAW had to be used instead. The only reason I can imagine so far was that SCROLL_MOVE wasn't used by DRM and as such it was assumed that it could go away. That argument completely missed the fact that SCROLL_MOVE is still heavily used by fbdev (non-DRM) drivers. Some people mention that using memcpy() instead of the hardware acceleration is pretty much the same speed. But that's not true, at least not for older graphic cards and machines where we see speed decreases by factor 10 and more and thus this change leads to console responsiveness way worse than before. That's why the original commit is to be reverted. By reverting we reintroduce hardware-based scrolling acceleration and fix the performance regression for fbdev drivers. There isn't any impact on DRM when reverting those patches. Revert "fb_defio: Remove custom address_space_operations" Commit ccf953d8f3d6 makes framebuffers which use deferred I/O stop displaying updates after the first one. This is because the pages handled by fb_defio no longer have a page_mapping(). That prevents page_mkclean() from marking the PTEs as clean, and so writes are only noticed the first time. fbmem: pull fbcon_update_vcs() out of fb_set_var() syzbot is reporting OOB read bug in vc_do_resize() [1] caused by memcpy() based on outdated old_{rows,row_size} values, for resize_screen() can recurse into vc_do_resize() which changes vc->vc_{cols,rows} that outdates old_{rows,row_size} values which were saved before calling resize_screen(). Daniel Vetter explained that resize_screen() should not recurse into fbcon_update_vcs() path due to FBINFO_MISC_USEREVENT being still set when calling resize_screen(). Instead of masking FBINFO_MISC_USEREVENT before calling fbcon_update_vcs(), we can remove FBINFO_MISC_USEREVENT by calling fbcon_update_vcs() only if fb_set_var() returned 0. This change assumes that it is harmless to call fbcon_update_vcs() when fb_set_var() returned 0 without reaching fb_notifier_call_chain(). fbcon: Call con2fb_map functions directly These are actually fbcon ioctls which just happen to be exposed through /dev/fb*. They completely ignore which fb_info they're called on, and I think the userspace tool even hardcodes to /dev/fb0. Hence just forward the entire thing to fbcon.c wholesale. Note that this patch drops the fb_lock/unlock on the set side. Since the ioctl can operate on any fb (as passed in through con2fb.framebuffer) this is bogus. Also note that fbcon.c in general never calls fb_lock on anything, so this has been badly broken already. With this the last user of the fbcon notifier callback is gone, and we can garbage collect that too. v2: add missing uaccess.h include (alpha fails to compile otherwise), reported by kbuild. v3: Remember to also drop the #defines (Maarten) v4: Add the static inline to dummy functions. Revert "backlight/fbcon: Add FB_EVENT_CONBLANK" This reverts commit 994efacdf9a087b52f71e620b58dfa526b0cf928. The justification is that if hw blanking fails (i.e. fbops->fb_blank) fails, then we still want to shut down the backlight. Which is exactly _not_ what fb_blank() does and so rather inconsistent if we end up with different behaviour between fbcon and direct fbdev usage. Given that the entire notifier maze is getting in the way anyway I figured it's simplest to revert this not well justified commit. v2: Add static inline to the dummy version. fbdev: lock_fb_info cannot fail Ever since commit c47747fde931c02455683bd00ea43eaa62f35b0e Author: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> Date: Wed May 11 14:58:34 2011 -0700 fbmem: make read/write/ioctl use the frame buffer at open time fbdev has gained proper refcounting for the fbinfo attached to any open files, which means that the backing driver (stored in fb_info->fbops) cannot untimely disappear anymore. The only thing that can happen is that the entire device just outright disappears and gets unregistered, but file_fb_info does check for that. Except that it's racy - it only checks once at the start of a file_ops, there's no guarantee that the underlying fbdev won't untimely disappear. Aside: A proper way to fix that race is probably to replicate the srcu trickery we've rolled out in drm. But given that this race has existed since forever it's probably not one we need to fix right away. do_unregister_framebuffer also nowhere clears fb_info->fbops, hence the check in lock_fb_info can't possible catch a disappearing fbdev later on. Long story short: Ever since the above commit the fb_info->fbops checks have essentially become dead code. Remove this all. Aside from the file_ops callbacks, and stuff called from there there's only register/unregister code left. If that goes wrong a driver managed to register/unregister a device instance twice or in the wrong order. fbcon: call fbcon_fb_(un)registered directly With commit 6104c37094e729f3d4ce65797002112735d49cd1 Author: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch> Date: Tue Aug 1 17:32:07 2017 +0200 fbcon: Make fbcon a built-time depency for fbdev we have a static dependency between fbcon and fbdev, and we can replace the indirection through the notifier chain with a function call. v2: Sam Ravnborg noticed that mach-pxa/am200epd.c has a notifier too, and listens to this. ... Looking at the code it seems to wait for some fb to show up, so that it can get the framebuffer base address from the fb_info struct. I suspect his is some firmware fbdev. Then it uses that information to let the real fbdev driver (metronomefb.c by the looks) get at the framebuffer memory. This doesn't looke like it's easy to fix (except by deleting the entire thing, seems untouched since 2008, we might be able to get away with that), so let's just stuff a few #ifdef into fb.h and fbmem.c and cry over them for a bit. fbdev: Add FBINFO_HIDE_SMEM_START flag DRM drivers really, really, really don't want random userspace to share buffer behind it's back, bypassing the dma-buf buffer sharing machanism. For that reason we've ruthlessly rejected any IOCTL exposing the physical address of any graphics buffer. Unfortunately fbdev comes with that built-in. We could just set smem_start to 0, but that means we'd have to hand-roll our own fb_mmap implementation. For good reasons many drivers do that, but smem_start/length is still super convenient. Hence instead just stop the leak in the ioctl, to keep fb mmap working as-is. A second patch will set this flag for all drm drivers. Unfortunately this never really worked reliably, and in practice ended up pushing the real Oops off the screen due to plentyfull locking, sleep-while-atomic and other issues. So we removed all that support from the fbdev emulation a while back. Aside: We've also removed the kgdb support, for similar reasons. Since it's such a small patch I figured I don't split this up into the usual 3-phase removal. Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org> |
License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. fbdev: fb_defio: Export fb_deferred_io_mmap Export fb_deferred_io_mmap so drivers can change vma->vm_page_prot. When the framebuffer memory is allocated using dma_alloc_writecombine() instead of vmalloc(), I get cache syncing problems on ARM. This solves it: static int drm_fbdev_cma_deferred_io_mmap(struct fb_info *info, struct vm_area_struct *vma) { fb_deferred_io_mmap(info, vma); vma->vm_page_prot = pgprot_writecombine(vma->vm_page_prot); return 0; } Could this have been done in the core? Drivers that don't set (struct fb_ops *)->fb_mmap, gets a call to fb_pgprotect() at the end of the default fb_mmap implementation (drivers/video/fbdev/core/fbmem.c). This is an architecture specific function that on many platforms uses pgprot_writecombine(), but not on all. And looking at some of the fb_mmap implementations, some of them sets vm_page_prot to nocache for instance, so I think the safest bet is to do this in the driver and not in the fbdev core. And we can't call fb_pgprotect() from fb_deferred_io_mmap() either because we don't have access to the file pointer that powerpc needs. fbdev: fix cea_modes array size CEA defines 64 modes, indexed from 1 to 64. modedb has cea_modes arrays, which contains 64 entries. However, the code uses the CEA indices directly, i.e. the first mode is at cea_modes[1]. This means the array is one too short. This does not cause references to uninitialized memory as the code in fbmon only allows indexes up to 63, and the cea_modes does not contain an entry for the mode 64 so it could not be used in any case. However, the code contains a check 'if (idx > ARRAY_SIZE(cea_modes)', and while that check is a no-op as at that point idx cannot be >= 63, it upsets static checkers. Fix this by increasing the cea_array size to be 65, and change the code to allow mode 64. Signed-off-by: Tomi Valkeinen <tomi.valkeinen@ti.com> Reported-by: Dan Carpenter <dan.carpenter@oracle.com>

fb_defio: add first_io callback With this optional callback the driver is notified when the first page is entered into the pagelist and a new deferred_io call is scheduled. A possible use-case for this is runtime-pm. In the first_io call pm_runtime_get() could be called, which starts an asynchronous runtime_resume of the device. In the deferred_io callback a call to pm_runtime_barrier() makes the sure, the device is resumed by then and a pm_runtime_put() may put the device back to sleep. Also, some SoCs may use the runtime-pm system to determine if they are able to enter deeper idle states. Therefore it is necessary to keep the use-count from the first written page until the conclusion of the screen update, to prevent the system from going to sleep before completing the pending update. Two users of defio were using kmalloc to allocate the structure. These allocations are changed to kzalloc, to prevent uninitialised .first_io members in those drivers. device.h: audit and cleanup users in main include dir The <linux/device.h> header includes a lot of stuff, and it in turn gets a lot of use just for the basic "struct device" which appears so often. Clean up the users as follows: 1) For those headers only needing "struct device" as a pointer in fcn args, replace the include with exactly that. 2) For headers not really using anything from device.h, simply delete the include altogether. 3) For headers relying on getting device.h implicitly before being included themselves, now explicitly include device.h 4) For files in which doing #1 or #2 uncovers an implicit dependency on some other header, fix by explicitly adding the required header(s). Any C files that were implicitly relying on device.h to be present have already been dealt with in advance. Total removals from #1 and #2: 51. Total additions coming from #3: 9. Total other implicit dependencies from #4: 7. As of 3.3-rc1, there were 110, so a net removal of 42 gives about a 38% reduction in device.h presence in include/* Signed-off-by: Paul Gortmaker <paul.gortmaker@windriver.com>

fs: push i_mutex and filemap_write_and_wait down into ->fsync() handlers Btrfs needs to be able to control how filemap_write_and_wait_range() is called in fsync to make it less of a painful operation, so push down taking i_mutex and the calling of filemap_write_and_wait() down into the ->fsync() handlers. Some file systems can drop taking the i_mutex altogether it seems, like ext3 and ocfs2. For correctness sake I just pushed everything down in all cases to make sure that we keep the current behavior the same for everybody, and then each individual fs maintainer can make up their mind about what to do from there. fbcon: add lifetime refcount to opened frame buffers This just adds the refcount and the new registration lock logic. It does not (for example) actually change the read/write/ioctl routines to actually use the frame buffer that was opened: those function still end up alway susing whatever the current frame buffer is at the time of the call. Without this, if something holds the frame buffer open over a framebuffer switch, the close() operation after the switch will access a fb_info that has been free'd by the unregistering of the old frame buffer. (The read/write/ioctl operations will normally not cause problems, because they will - illogically - pick up the new fbcon instead. But a switch that happens just as one of those is going on might see problems too, the window is just much smaller: one individual op rather than the whole open-close sequence.) This use-after-free is apparently fairly easily triggered by the Ubuntu 11.04 boot sequence. fbcmap: integer overflow bug There is an integer overflow in fb_set_user_cmap() because cmap->len * 2 can wrap. It's basically harmless. Your terminal will be messed up until you type reset. This patch does three things to fix the bug. First, it checks the return value of fb_copy_cmap() in fb_alloc_cmap(). That is enough to fix address the overflow. Second it checks for the integer overflow in fb_set_user_cmap(). Lastly I wanted to cap "cmap->len" in fb_set_user_cmap() much lower because it gets used to determine the size of allocation. Unfortunately no one knows what the limit should be. Instead what this patch does is makes the allocation happen with GFP_KERNEL instead of GFP_ATOMIC and lets the kmalloc() decide what values of cmap->len are reasonable. To do this, the patch introduces a function called fb_alloc_cmap_gfp() which is like fb_alloc_cmap() except that it takes a GFP flag. vt/console: try harder to print output when panicing Jesse's initial patch commit said: "At panic time (i.e. when oops_in_progress is set) we should try a bit harder to update the screen and make sure output gets to the VT, since some drivers are capable of flipping back to it. So make sure we try to unblank and update the display if called from a panic context." I've enhanced this to add a flag to the vc that console layer can set to indicate they want this behaviour to occur. These GPUs are typically wired to the laptop panel and VGA ports via a multiplexer unit which is controlled via ACPI methods. 4 combinations of systems typically exist - with 2 ACPI methods. Intel/ATI - Lenovo W500/T500 - use ATPX ACPI method ATI/ATI - some ASUS - use ATPX ACPI Method Intel/Nvidia - - use _DSM ACPI method Nvidia/Nvidia - - use _DSM ACPI method. TODO: This patch adds support for the ATPX method and initial bits for the _DSM methods that need to written by someone with access to the hardware. Add a proper non-debugfs interface - need to get some proper testing first. v2: add power up/down support for both devices on W500 puts i915/radeon into D3 and cuts power to radeon. v3: redo probing methods, no DMI list, drm devices call to register with switcheroo, it tries to find an ATPX method on any device and once there is two devices + ATPX it inits the switcher. v4: ATPX msg handling using buffers - should work on more machines v5: rearchitect after more mjg59 discussion - move ATPX handling to radeon driver. v6: add file headers + initial nouveau bits (to be filled out). v7: merge delayed switcher code. v8: avoid suspend/resume of gpu that is off v9: rearchitect - mjg59 is always right. - move all ATPX code to radeon, should allow simpler DSM also proper ATRM handling v10: add ATRM support for radeon BIOS, add mutex to lock vgasr_priv v11: fix bug in resuming Intel for 2nd time. v12: start fixing up nvidia code blindly. v13: blindly guess at finishing nvidia code v14: remove radeon audio hacks - fix up intel resume more like upstream v15: clean up printks + remove unnecessary igd/dis pointers mount debugfs /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch - should exist if ATPX detected + 2 cards. DIS - immediate change to discrete IGD - immediate change to IGD DDIS - delayed change to discrete DIGD - delayed change to IGD ON - turn on not in use OFF - turn off not in use Tested on W500 (Intel/ATI) and T500 (Intel/ATI) Signed-off-by: Dave Airlie <airlied@redhat.com>

fb: remove fb_save_state() and fb_restore_state operations Remove fb_save_state() and fb_restore_state operations from frame buffer layer. They are used only in two drivers: 1. savagefb - and cause bug #11248 2. uvesafb Usage of these operations is misunderstood in both drivers so kill these operations, fix the bug #11248 and avoid confusion in the future. Tested on Savage 3D/MV card and the patch fixes the bug #11248. The frame buffer layer uses these funtions during switch between graphics and text mode of the console, but these drivers saves state before switching of the frame buffer (in the fb_open) and after releasing it (in the fb_release). This defeats the purpose of these operations. fbdev: add mutex for fb_mmap locking Add a mutex to avoid a circular locking problem between the mm layer semaphore and fbdev ioctl mutex through the fb_mmap() call. Also, add mutex to all places where smem_start and smem_len fields change so the mutex inside the fb_mmap() is actually used. Changing of these fields before calling the framebuffer_register() are not mutexed. This is 2.6.31 material. It removes one lockdep (fb_mmap() and register_framebuffer()) but there is still another one (fb_release() and register_framebuffer()). It also cleans up handling of the smem_start and smem_len fields used by mutexed section of the fb_mmap(). fbdev: add support for handoff from firmware to hw framebuffers With KMS we have ran into an issue where we really want the KMS fb driver to be the one running the console, so panics etc can be shown by switching out of X etc. However with vesafb/efifb built-in, we end up with those on fb0 and the KMS fb driver on fb1, driving the same piece of hw, so this adds an fb info flag to denote a firmware fbdev, and adds a new aperture base/size range which can be compared when the hw drivers are installed to see if there is a conflict with a firmware driver, and if there is the firmware driver is unregistered and the hw driver takes over. It uses new aperture_base/size members instead of comparing on the fix smem_start/length, as smem_start/length might for example only cover the first 1MB of the PCI aperture, and we could allocate the kms fb from 8MB into the aperture, thus they would never overlap. fbdev: fbcon: console unregistration from unregister_framebuffer This allows for proper console unregistration via the VT layer, and updates the FB layer to use it. This makes debugging new console drivers much easier, since you can properly clean them up before unloading. [adaplas] unregister_framebuffer() is typically called as part of the driver's module_exit(). Doing so otherwise will freeze the machine as the VT layer is holding reference counts on fbcon, and fbcon on the driver. With this change, it allows unregister_framebuffer() to be called safely anywhere as needed. Additions from the original: If multiple drivers are used by fbcon, and if one of them unregisters, a driver will take over the consoles vacated by the outgoing one (via set_con2fb_map). Once only the outgoing driver remains, then fbcon will unbind from the VT layer (if CONFIG_HW_CONSOLE_UNBINDING is set to y). It is important that these drivers implement fb_open() and fb_release() just to ensure that no other process is using the driver. Likewise, these drivers _must_ check the return value of unregister_framebuffer(). fbdev: mm: Deferred IO support This implements deferred IO support in fbdev. Deferred IO is a way to delay and repurpose IO. This implementation is done using mm's page_mkwrite and page_mkclean hooks in order to detect, delay and then rewrite IO. This functionality is used by hecubafb. [adaplas] This is useful for graphics hardware with no directly addressable/mappable framebuffer. Implementing this will allow the "framebuffer" to be accesible from user space via mmap(). [PATCH] VT binding: Update fbcon to support binding The control for binding/unbinding is moved from fbcon to the console layer. Thus the fbcon sysfs attributes, attach and detach, are also gone. 1. Add a notifier event that tells fbcon if a framebuffer driver has been unregistered. If no registered driver remains, fbcon will unregister itself from the console layer. 2. Replaced calls to give_up_console() with unregister_con_driver(). 3. Still use take_over_console() instead of register_con_driver() to maintain compatibility 4. Respect the parameter first_fb_vc and last_fb_vc instead of using 0 and MAX_NR_CONSOLES - 1. These parameters are settable by the user. 5. When fbcon is completely unbound from the console layer, fbcon will also release (iow, decrement module reference counts to zero) all fbdev drivers. In other words, a bind or unbind request from the console layer will propagate down to the framebuffer drivers. 6. If fbcon is not bound to the console, it will ignore all notifier events (except driver registration and unregistration) and all sysfs requests. [PATCH] fbdev: fix switch to KD_TEXT, enhanced version Every framebuffer driver relies on the assumption that the set_par() function of the driver is called before drawing functions and other functions dependent on the hardware state are executed. Whenever you switch from X to a framebuffer console for the very first time, there is a chance that a broken X system has _not_ set the mode to KD_GRAPHICS, thus the vt and framebuffer code executes a screen redraw and several other functions before a set_par() is executed. This is believed to be not a bug of linux but a bug of X/xdm. At least some X releases used by SuSE and Debian show this behaviour. There was a 2nd case, but that has been fixed by Antonino Daplas on 10-dec-2005. This patch allows drivers to set a flag to inform fbcon_switch() that they prefer a set_par() call on every console switch, working around the problems caused by the broken X releases. The flag will be used by the next release of cyblafb and might help other drivers that assume a hardware state different to the one used by X. As the default behaviour does not change, this patch should be acceptable to everybody. Signed-off-by: Knut Petersen <Knut_Petersen@t-online.de> Acked-by: "Antonino A. [PATCH] fbcon: Console Rotation - Add ability to control rotation via sysfs Add ability to set rotation via sysfs. The attributes are located in /sys/class/graphics/fb[n] and accepts 0 - unrotated; 1 - clockwise; 2 - upside down; 3 - counterclockwise. The attributes are: con_rotate (r/w) - set rotation of the active console con_rotate_all (w) - set rotation of all consoles rotate (r/w) - set rotation of the framebuffer, if supported. Currently, none of the drivers support this. This is probably temporary, since con_rotate and con_rotate_all are console-specific and has no business being under the fb device. [PATCH] fbcon: Console Rotation - Prepare fbcon for console rotation This patch series implements generic code to rotate the console at 90, 180, and 270 degrees. The implementation is completely done in the framebuffer console level, thus no changes to the framebuffer layer or to the drivers are needed. Console rotation is required by some Sharp-based devices where the natural orientation of the display is not at 0 degrees. Also, users that have displays that can pivot will benefit by having a console in portrait mode if they so desire. The choice to implement the code in the console layer rather than in the framebuffer layer is due to the following reasons: - it's fast - it does not require driver changes - it can coexist with devices that can rotate the display at the hardware level - it complements graphics applications that can do display rotation The changes to core fbcon are minimal-- recognition of the console rotation angle so it can swap directions, origins and axes (xres vs yres, xpanstep vs ypanstep, xoffset vs yoffset, etc) and storage of the rotation angle per display. The bulk of the code that does the actual drawing to the screen are placed in separate files. Each angle of rotation has separate methods (bmove, clear, putcs, cursor, update_start which is derived from update_var, and clear_margins). To mimimize processing time, the fontdata are pre-rotated at each console switch (only if the font or the angle has changed). The option can be compiled out (CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_ROTATION = n) if rotation is not needed. Choosing the rotation angle can be done in several ways: 1. boot option fbcon=rotate:n, where n = 0 - normal n = 1 - 90 degrees (clockwise) n = 2 - 180 degrees (upside down) n = 3 - 270 degrees (counterclockwise) 2. echo n > /sys/class/graphics/fb[num]/con_rotate where n is the same as described above. It sets the angle of rotation of the current console 3 echo n > /sys/class/graphics/fb[num]/con_rotate_all where n is the same as described above. Globally sets the angle of rotation. GOTCHAS: The option, especially at angles of 90 and 270 degrees, will exercise the least used code of drivers. Namely, at these angles, panning is done in the x-axis, so it can reveal bugs in the driver if xpanstep is set incorrectly. A workaround is to set xpanstep = 0. Secondly, at these angles, the framebuffer memory access can be unaligned if (fontheight * bpp) % 32 ~= 0 which can reveal bugs in the drivers imageblit, fillrect and copyarea functions. (I think cfbfillrect may have this buglet). A workaround is to use a standard 8x16 font. Speed: The scrolling speed difference between 0 and 180 degrees is minimal, somewhere areound 1-2%. At 90 or 270 degress, speed drops down to a vicinity of 30-40%. This is understandable because the blit direction is across the framebuffer "direction." Scrolling will be helped at these angles if xpanstep is not equal to zero, use of 8x16 fonts, and setting xres_virtual >= xres * 2. Note: The code is tested on little-endian only, so I don't know if it will work in big-endian. Please let me know, it will take only less than a minute of your time. This patch prepares fbcon for console rotation and contains the following changes: - add rotate field in struct fbcon_ops to keep fbcon's current rotation angle - add con_rotate field in struct display to store per-display rotation angle - create a private copy of the current var to fbcon. This will prevent fbcon from directly manipulating info->var, especially the fields xoffset, yoffset and vmode. - add ability to swap pertinent axes (xres, yres; xpanstep, ypanstep; etc) depending on the rotation angle - change global update_var() (function that sets the screen start address) as an fbcon method update_start. This is required because the axes, start offset, and/or direction can be reversed depending on the rotation angle. - add fbcon method rotate_font() which will rotate each character bitmap to the correct angle of rotation. - add fbcon boot option 'rotate' to select the angle of rotation at bootime. Currently does nothing until all patches are applied. Signed-off-by: Antonino Daplas <adaplas@pol.net> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

[PATCH] fbdev: fix the fb_find_nearest_mode() function Currently the fb_find_nearest_mode() function finds a mode with screen resolution closest to that described by the 'var' argument and with some arbitrary refresh rate (eg. in the following sequence of refresh rates: 70 60 53 85 75, 53 is selected). This patch fixes the function so that it looks for the closest mode as far as both resolution and refresh rate are concerned. [PATCH] fbcon/fbdev: Move softcursor out of fbdev to fbcon According to Jon Smirl, filling in the field fb_cursor with soft_cursor for drivers that do not support hardware cursors is redundant. The soft_cursor function is usable by all drivers because it is just a wrapper around fb_imageblit. And because soft_cursor is an fbcon-specific hook, the file is moved to the console directory. Thus, drivers that do not support hardware cursors can leave the fb_cursor field blank. For drivers that do, they can fill up this field with their own version. The end result is a smaller code size. And if the framebuffer console is not loaded, module/kernel size is also reduced because the soft_cursor module will also not be loaded. [PATCH] fbcon: Break up bit_putcs into its component functions The function bit_putcs() in drivers/video/console/bitblit.c is becoming large. Break it up into its component functions (bit_putcs_unaligned and bit_putcs_aligned). Incorporated fb_pad_aligned_buffer() optimization by Roman Zippel. [PATCH] fbdev: Add VESA Coordinated Video Timings (CVT) support The Coordinated Video Timings (CVT) is the latest standard approved by VESA concerning video timings generation. It addresses the limitation of GTF which is designed mainly for CRT displays. CRT's have a high blanking requirement (as much as 25% of the horizontal frame length) which artificially increases the pixelclock. Digital displays, on the other hand, needs to conserve the pixelclock as much as possible. The GTF also does not take into account the different aspect ratios in its calculation. The new function added is fb_find_mode_cvt(). It is called by fb_find_mode() if it recognizes a mode option string formatted for CVT. The format is: <xres>x<yres>[M][R][-<bpp>][<at-sign><refresh>][i][m] The 'M' tells the function to calculate using CVT. On it's own, it will compute a timing for CRT displays at 60Hz. If the 'R' is specified, 'reduced blanking' computation will be used, best for flatpanels. The 'i' and the 'm' is for 'interlaced mode' and 'with margins' respectively. To determine if CVT was used, check for dmesg for something like this: CVT Mode - <pix>M<n>[-R], ie: .480M3-R (800x600 reduced blanking) where: pix - product of xres and yres, in MB M - is a CVT mode n - the aspect ratio (3 - 4:3; 4 - 5:4; 9 - 16:9, 15:9; A - 16:10) -R - reduced blanking Signed-off-by: Antonino Daplas <adaplas@pol.net> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

[PATCH] fbdev: Fix greater than 1 bit monochrome color handling Currently, fbcon assumes that the visual FB_VISUAL_MONO* is always 1 bit. According to Geert, there are old hardware where it's possible to have monochrome at 8-bit, but has only 2 colors, black - 0x00 and white - 0xff. Fix color handlers (fb_get_color_depth, and get_color) for this special case. [PATCH] fbdev: Resurrect hooks to get EDID from firmware For the i386, code is already present in video.S that gets the EDID from the video BIOS. Make this visible so drivers can also use this data as fallback when i2c does not work. To ensure that the EDID block is returned for the primary graphics adapter only, by check if the IORESOURCE_ROM_SHADOW flag is set. [PATCH] fbdev: iomove removal Since no one is using the inbuf, outbuf of struct fb_pixmap I removed their use in the framebuffer console. The idea is instead move the pixmap functionality below the accelerated functions intead of on top as the way it is now. If there is no objection please apply. This is against Linus latestr GIT tree. [PATCH] fbdev: Batch cmap changes at driver level This patch adds to the fbdev interface a set_cmap callback that allow the driver to "batch" palette changes. This is useful for drivers like radeonfb which might require lenghtly workarounds on palette accesses, thus allowing to factor out those workarounds efficiently. Linux-2.6.12-rc2 Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
