sched/preempt: Add PREEMPT_DYNAMIC using static keys Where an architecture selects HAVE_STATIC_CALL but not HAVE_STATIC_CALL_INLINE, each static call has an out-of-line trampoline which will either branch to a callee or return to the caller. On such architectures, a number of constraints can conspire to make those trampolines more complicated and potentially less useful than we'd like. For example: * Hardware and software control flow integrity schemes can require the addition of "landing pad" instructions (e.g. `BTI` for arm64), which will also be present at the "real" callee. * Limited branch ranges can require that trampolines generate or load an address into a register and perform an indirect branch (or at least have a slow path that does so). This loses some of the benefits of having a direct branch. * Interaction with SW CFI schemes can be complicated and fragile, e.g. requiring that we can recognise idiomatic codegen and remove indirections understand, at least until clang proves more helpful mechanisms for dealing with this. For PREEMPT_DYNAMIC, we don't need the full power of static calls, as we really only need to enable/disable specific preemption functions. We can achieve the same effect without a number of the pain points above by using static keys to fold early returns into the preemption functions themselves rather than in an out-of-line trampoline, effectively inlining the trampoline into the start of the function. For arm64, this results in good code generation. For example, the dynamic_cond_resched() wrapper looks as follows when enabled. When disabled, the first `B` is replaced with a `NOP`, resulting in an early return. | <dynamic_cond_resched>: | bti c | b <dynamic_cond_resched+0x10> // or `nop` | mov w0, #0x0 | ret | mrs x0, sp_el0 | ldr x0, [x0, #8] | cbnz x0, <dynamic_cond_resched+0x8> | paciasp | stp x29, x30, [sp, #-16]! | mov x29, sp | bl <preempt_schedule_common> | mov w0, #0x1 | ldp x29, x30, [sp], #16 | autiasp | ret ... compared to the regular form of the function: | <__cond_resched>: | bti c | mrs x0, sp_el0 | ldr x1, [x0, #8] | cbz x1, <__cond_resched+0x18> | mov w0, #0x0 | ret | paciasp | stp x29, x30, [sp, #-16]! | mov x29, sp | bl <preempt_schedule_common> | mov w0, #0x1 | ldp x29, x30, [sp], #16 | autiasp | ret Any architecture which implements static keys should be able to use this to implement PREEMPT_DYNAMIC with similar cost to non-inlined static calls. Since this is likely to have greater overhead than (inlined) static calls, PREEMPT_DYNAMIC is only defaulted to enabled when HAVE_PREEMPT_DYNAMIC_CALL is selected. sched/preempt: Simplify irqentry_exit_cond_resched() callers Currently callers of irqentry_exit_cond_resched() need to be aware of whether the function should be indirected via a static call, leading to ugly ifdeffery in callers. Save them the hassle with a static inline wrapper that does the right thing. The raw_irqentry_exit_cond_resched() will also be useful in subsequent patches which will add conditional wrappers for preemption functions. Note: in arch/x86/entry/common.c, xen_pv_evtchn_do_upcall() always calls irqentry_exit_cond_resched() directly, even when PREEMPT_DYNAMIC is in use. I believe this is a latent bug (which this patch corrects), but I'm not entirely certain this wasn't deliberate. sched/preempt: Refactor sched_dynamic_update() Currently sched_dynamic_update needs to open-code the enabled/disabled function names for each preemption model it supports, when in practice this is a boolean enabled/disabled state for each function. Make this clearer and avoid repetition by defining the enabled/disabled states at the function definition, and using helper macros to perform the static_call_update(). Where x86 currently overrides the enabled function, it is made to provide both the enabled and disabled states for consistency, with defaults provided by the core code otherwise. In subsequent patches this will allow us to support PREEMPT_DYNAMIC without static calls. There should be no functional change as a result of this patch. entry: Ensure trap after single-step on system call return Commit 299155244770 ("entry: Drop usage of TIF flags in the generic syscall code") introduced a bug on architectures using the generic syscall entry code, in which processes stopped by PTRACE_SYSCALL do not trap on syscall return after receiving a TIF_SINGLESTEP. The reason is that the meaning of TIF_SINGLESTEP flag is overloaded to cause the trap after a system call is executed, but since the above commit, the syscall call handler only checks for the SYSCALL_WORK flags on the exit work. Split the meaning of TIF_SINGLESTEP such that it only means single-step mode, and create a new type of SYSCALL_WORK to request a trap immediately after a syscall in single-step mode. In the current implementation, the SYSCALL_WORK flag shadows the TIF_SINGLESTEP flag for simplicity. Update x86 to flip this bit when a tracer enables single stepping. [ Ira: Make exit_rcu and lockdep a union as they are mutually exclusive between the IRQ and NMI exceptions, and add kernel documentation for struct irqentry_state_t ] Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de> Signed-off-by: Ira Weiny <ira.weiny@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20201102205320.1458656-7-ira.weiny@intel.com

entry: Add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL Add TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL handling in the generic entry code, which if set, will return true if signal_pending() is used in a wait loop. That causes an exit of the loop so that notify_signal tracehooks can be run. If the wait loop is currently inside a system call, the system call is restarted once task_work has been processed. In preparation for only having arch_do_signal() handle syscall restarts if _TIF_SIGPENDING isn't set, rename it to arch_do_signal_or_restart(). Pass in a boolean that tells the architecture specific signal handler if it should attempt to get a signal, or just process a potential syscall restart. For !CONFIG_GENERIC_ENTRY archs, add the TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL handling to get_signal(). This is done to minimize the needed architecture changes to support this feature. x86/entry: Unbreak 32bit fast syscall Andy reported that the syscall treacing for 32bit fast syscall fails: # ./tools/testing/selftests/x86/ptrace_syscall_32 ... [RUN] SYSEMU [FAIL] Initial args are wrong (nr=224, args=10 11 12 13 14 4289172732) ... [RUN] SYSCALL [FAIL] Initial args are wrong (nr=29, args=0 0 0 0 0 4289172732) The eason is that the conversion to generic entry code moved the retrieval of the sixth argument (EBP) after the point where the syscall entry work runs, i.e. ptrace, seccomp, audit... Unbreak it by providing a split up version of syscall_enter_from_user_mode(). - syscall_enter_from_user_mode_prepare() establishes state and enables interrupts - syscall_enter_from_user_mode_work() runs the entry work Replace the call to syscall_enter_from_user_mode() in the 32bit fast syscall C-entry with the split functions and stick the EBP retrieval between them. entry: Provide generic interrupt entry/exit code Like the syscall entry/exit code interrupt/exception entry after the real low level ASM bits should not be different accross architectures. Provide a generic version based on the x86 code. irqentry_enter() is called after the low level entry code and irqentry_exit() must be invoked right before returning to the low level code which just contains the actual return logic. The code before irqentry_enter() and irqentry_exit() must not be instrumented. Code after irqentry_enter() and before irqentry_exit() can be instrumented. irqentry_enter() invokes irqentry_enter_from_user_mode() if the interrupt/exception came from user mode. If if entered from kernel mode it handles the kernel mode variant of establishing state for lockdep, RCU and tracing depending on the kernel context it interrupted (idle, non-idle). entry: Provide generic syscall exit function Like syscall entry all architectures have similar and pointlessly different code to handle pending work before returning from a syscall to user space. 1) One-time syscall exit work: - rseq syscall exit - audit - syscall tracing - tracehook (single stepping) 2) Preparatory work - Exit to user mode loop (common TIF handling). - Architecture specific one time work arch_exit_to_user_mode_prepare() - Address limit and lockdep checks 3) Final transition (lockdep, tracing, context tracking, RCU). Invokes arch_exit_to_user_mode() to handle e.g. speculation mitigations Provide a generic version based on the x86 code which has all the RCU and instrumentation protections right. Provide a variant for interrupt return to user mode as well which shares the above #2 and #3 work items. After syscall_exit_to_user_mode() and irqentry_exit_to_user_mode() the architecture code just has to return to user space. The code after returning from these functions must not be instrumented. entry: Provide generic syscall entry functionality On syscall entry certain work needs to be done: - Establish state (lockdep, context tracking, tracing) - Conditional work (ptrace, seccomp, audit...) This code is needlessly duplicated and different in all architectures. Provide a generic version based on the x86 implementation which has all the RCU and instrumentation bits right. As interrupt/exception entry from user space needs parts of the same functionality, provide a function for this as well. syscall_enter_from_user_mode() and irqentry_enter_from_user_mode() must be called right after the low level ASM entry. The calling code must be non-instrumentable. After the functions returns state is correct and the subsequent functions can be instrumented.
