xfs: clean up the xfs_reserve_blocks interface xfs_reserve_blocks has a very odd interface that can only be explained by it directly deriving from the IRIX fcntl handler back in the day. Split reporting out the reserved blocks out of xfs_reserve_blocks into the only caller that cares. This means that the value reported from XFS_IOC_SET_RESBLKS isn't atomically sampled in the same critical section as when it was set anymore, but as the values could change right after setting them anyway that does not matter. It does provide atomic sampling of both values for XFS_IOC_GET_RESBLKS now, though. Also pass a normal scalar integer value for the requested value instead of the pointless pointer. Especially for non-vfs developers without detailed knowledge in this area this can be a potential source for bugs. Once the conversion to struct mnt_idmap is done all helpers down to the really low-level helpers will take a struct mnt_idmap argument instead of two namespace arguments. xfs: separate out initial attr_set states We current use XFS_DAS_UNINIT for several steps in the attr_set state machine. We use it for setting shortform xattrs, converting from shortform to leaf, leaf add, leaf-to-node and leaf add. All of these things are essentially known before we start the state machine iterating, so we really should separate them out: XFS_DAS_SF_ADD: - tries to do a shortform add - on success -> done - on ENOSPC converts to leaf, -> XFS_DAS_LEAF_ADD - on error, dies. XFS_DAS_LEAF_ADD: - tries to do leaf add - on success: - inline attr -> done - remote xattr || REPLACE -> XFS_DAS_FOUND_LBLK - on ENOSPC converts to node, -> XFS_DAS_NODE_ADD - on error, dies XFS_DAS_NODE_ADD: - tries to do node add - on success: - inline attr -> done - remote xattr || REPLACE -> XFS_DAS_FOUND_NBLK - on error, dies This makes it easier to understand how the state machine starts up and sets us up on the path to further state machine simplifications. This also converts the DAS state tracepoints to use strings rather than numbers, as converting between enums and numbers requires manual counting rather than just reading the name. This also introduces a XFS_DAS_DONE state so that we can trace successful operation completions easily. xfs: kill the XFS_IOC_{ALLOC,FREE}SP* ioctls According to the glibc compat header for Irix 4, these ioctls originated in April 1991 as a (somewhat clunky) way to preallocate space at the end of a file on an EFS filesystem. XFS, which was released in Irix 5.3 in December 1993, picked up these ioctls to maintain compatibility and they were ported to Linux in the early 2000s. Recently it was pointed out to me they still lurk in the kernel, even though the Linux fallocate syscall supplanted the functionality a long time ago. fstests doesn't seem to include any real functional or stress tests for these ioctls, which means that the code quality is ... very questionable. Most notably, it was a stale disk block exposure vector for 21 years and nobody noticed or complained. As mature programmers say, "If you're not testing it, it's broken." Given all that, let's withdraw these ioctls from the XFS userspace API. Normally we'd set a long deprecation process, but I estimate that there aren't any real users, so let's trigger a warning in dmesg and return -ENOTTY. xfs: don't expose misaligned extszinherit hints to userspace Commit 603f000b15f2 changed xfs_ioctl_setattr_check_extsize to reject an attempt to set an EXTSZINHERIT extent size hint on a directory with RTINHERIT set if the hint isn't a multiple of the realtime extent size. However, I have recently discovered that it is possible to change the realtime extent size when adding a rt device to a filesystem, which means that the existence of directories with misaligned inherited hints is not an accident. As a result, it's possible that someone could have set a valid hint and added an rt volume with a different rt extent size, which invalidates the ondisk hints. After such a sequence, FSGETXATTR will report a misaligned hint, which FSSETXATTR will trip over, causing confusion if the user was doing the usual GET/SET sequence to change some other attribute. Change xfs_fill_fsxattr to omit the hint if it isn't aligned properly. Fixes: 603f000b15f2 ("xfs: validate extsz hints against rt extent size when rtinherit is set") Signed-off-by: Darrick J. xfs: correct the narrative around misaligned rtinherit/extszinherit dirs While auditing the realtime growfs code, I realized that the GROWFSRT ioctl (and by extension xfs_growfs) has always allowed sysadmins to change the realtime extent size when adding a realtime section to the filesystem. Since we also have always allowed sysadmins to set RTINHERIT and EXTSZINHERIT on directories even if there is no realtime device, this invalidates the premise laid out in the comments added in commit 603f000b15f2. In other words, this is not a case of inadequate metadata validation. This is a case of nearly forgotten (and apparently untested) but supported functionality. Update the comments to reflect what we've learned, and remove the log message about correcting the misalignment. xfs: validate extsz hints against rt extent size when rtinherit is set The RTINHERIT bit can be set on a directory so that newly created regular files will have the REALTIME bit set to store their data on the realtime volume. If an extent size hint (and EXTSZINHERIT) are set on the directory, the hint will also be copied into the new file. As pointed out in previous patches, for realtime files we require the extent size hint be an integer multiple of the realtime extent, but we don't perform the same validation on a directory with both RTINHERIT and EXTSZINHERIT set, even though the only use-case of that combination is to propagate extent size hints into new realtime files. This leads to inode corruption errors when the bad values are propagated. Because there may be existing filesystems with such a configuration, we cannot simply amend the inode verifier to trip on these directories and call it a day because that will cause previously "working" filesystems to start throwing errors abruptly. Note that it's valid to have directories with rtinherit set even if there is no realtime volume, in which case the problem does not manifest because rtinherit is ignored if there's no realtime device; and it's possible that someone set the flag, crashed, repaired the filesystem (which clears the hint on the realtime file) and continued. Therefore, mitigate this issue in several ways: First, if we try to write out an inode with both rtinherit/extszinherit set and an unaligned extent size hint, turn off the hint to correct the error. Second, if someone tries to misconfigure a directory via the fssetxattr ioctl, fail the ioctl. Third, reverify both extent size hint values when we propagate heritable inode attributes from parent to child, to prevent misconfigurations from spreading. Signed-off-by: Darrick J. xfs: standardize extent size hint validation While chasing a bug involving invalid extent size hints being propagated into newly created realtime files, I noticed that the xfs_ioctl_setattr checks for the extent size hints weren't the same as the ones now encoded in libxfs and used for validation in repair and mkfs. Because the checks in libxfs are more stringent than the ones in the ioctl, it's possible for a live system to set inode flags that immediately result in corruption warnings. Specifically, it's possible to set an extent size hint on an rtinherit directory without checking if the hint is aligned to the realtime extent size, which makes no sense since that combination is used only to seed new realtime files. Replace the open-coded and inadequate checks with the libxfs verifier versions and update the code comments a bit. Signed-off-by: Darrick J. When the sysadmin runs scrub in repair mode, the scrub code allocates real transactions (with reservations) to change things, but doesn't increment the superblock writers count to block a readonly remount attempt while it is running. We don't require the userspace caller to have a writable file descriptor to run repairs, so we have to call mnt_want_write_file to obtain freeze protection and increment the writers count. It's ok to remove the call to sb_start_write for the dry-run case because commit 8321ddb2fa29 removed the behavior where scrub and fsfreeze fight over the buffer LRU. Signed-off-by: Darrick J. xfs: fix deadlock and streamline xfs_getfsmap performance Refactor xfs_getfsmap to improve its performance: instead of indirectly calling a function that copies one record to userspace at a time, create a shadow buffer in the kernel and copy the whole array once at the end. On the author's computer, this reduces the runtime on his /home by ~20%. This also eliminates a deadlock when running GETFSMAP against the realtime device. The current code locks the rtbitmap to create fsmappings and copies them into userspace, having not released the rtbitmap lock. If the userspace buffer is an mmap of a sparse file that itself resides on the realtime device, the write page fault will recurse into the fs for allocation, which will deadlock on the rtbitmap lock. Combining them can be done with a flag which indicates if this is the initial setup to allow the DAX flag to be properly set only at init time. So remove xfs_diflags_to_linux() and call the modified xfs_diflags_to_iflags() directly. While we are here simplify xfs_diflags_to_iflags() to take struct xfs_inode and use xfs_ip2xflags() to ensure future diflags are included correctly. xfs: acquire superblock freeze protection on eofblocks scans The filesystem freeze sequence in XFS waits on any background eofblocks or cowblocks scans to complete before the filesystem is quiesced. At this point, the freezer has already stopped the transaction subsystem, however, which means a truncate or cowblock cancellation in progress is likely blocked in transaction allocation. This results in a deadlock between freeze and the associated scanner. Fix this problem by holding superblock write protection across calls into the block reapers. Since protection for background scans is acquired from the workqueue task context, trylock to avoid a similar deadlock between freeze and blocking on the write lock. xfs: properly serialise fallocate against AIO+DIO AIO+DIO can extend the file size on IO completion, and it holds no inode locks while the IO is in flight. Therefore, a race condition exists in file size updates if we do something like this: aio-thread fallocate-thread lock inode submit IO beyond inode->i_size unlock inode ..... lock inode break layouts if (off + len > inode->i_size) new_size = off + len ..... inode_dio_wait() <blocks> ..... completes inode->i_size updated inode_dio_done() .... <wakes> <does stuff no long beyond EOF> if (new_size) xfs_vn_setattr(inode, new_size) Yup, that attempt to extend the file size in the fallocate code turns into a truncate - it removes the whatever the aio write allocated and put to disk, and reduced the inode size back down to where the fallocate operation ends. Fundamentally, xfs_file_fallocate() not compatible with racing AIO+DIO completions, so we need to move the inode_dio_wait() call up to where the lock the inode and break the layouts. Secondly, storing the inode size and then using it unchecked without holding the ILOCK is not safe; we can only do such a thing if we've locked out and drained all IO and other modification operations, which we don't do initially in xfs_file_fallocate. It should be noted that some of the fallocate operations are compound operations - they are made up of multiple manipulations that may zero data, and so we may need to flush and invalidate the file multiple times during an operation. However, we only need to lock out IO and other space manipulation operations once, as that lockout is maintained until the entire fallocate operation has been completed. xfs: allocate xattr buffer on demand When doing file lookups and checking for permissions, we end up in xfs_get_acl() to see if there are any ACLs on the inode. This requires and xattr lookup, and to do that we have to supply a buffer large enough to hold an maximum sized xattr. On workloads were we are accessing a wide range of cache cold files under memory pressure (e.g. NFS fileservers) we end up spending a lot of time allocating the buffer. The buffer is 64k in length, so is a contiguous multi-page allocation, and if that then fails we fall back to vmalloc(). Hence the allocation here is /expensive/ when we are looking up hundreds of thousands of files a second. Initial numbers from a bpf trace show average time in xfs_get_acl() is ~32us, with ~19us of that in the memory allocation. Note these are average times, so there are going to be affected by the worst case allocations more than the common fast case... To avoid this, we could just do a "null" lookup to see if the ACL xattr exists and then only do the allocation if it exists. This, however, optimises the path for the "no ACL present" case at the expense of the "acl present" case. i.e. we can halve the time in xfs_get_acl() for the no acl case (i.e down to ~10-15us), but that then increases the ACL case by 30% (i.e. up to 40-45us). To solve this and speed up both cases, drive the xattr buffer allocation into the attribute code once we know what the actual xattr length is. For the no-xattr case, we avoid the allocation completely, speeding up that case. For the common ACL case, we'll end up with a fast heap allocation (because it'll be smaller than a page), and only for the rarer "we have a remote xattr" will we have a multi-page allocation occur. Hence the common ACL case will be much faster, too. Signed-off-by: Dave Chinner <dchinner@redhat.com> Reviewed-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Reviewed-by: Darrick J. xfs: don't update lastino for FSBULKSTAT_SINGLE The kernel test robot found a regression of xfs/054 in the conversion of bulkstat to use the new iwalk infrastructure -- if a caller set *lastip = 128 and invoked FSBULKSTAT_SINGLE, the bstat info would be for inode 128, but *lastip would be increased by the kernel to 129. xfs: allow single bulkstat of special inodes Create a new bulk ireq flag that enables userspace to ask us for a special inode number instead of interpreting @ino as a literal inode number. This enables us to query the root inode easily. The reason for adding the ability to query specifically the root directory inode is that certain programs (xfsdump and xfsrestore) want to confirm when they've been pointed to the root directory. The userspace code assumes the root directory is always the first result from calling bulkstat with lastino == 0, but this isn't true if the (initial btree roots + initial AGFL + inode alignment padding) is itself long enough to be allocated to new inodes if all of those blocks should happen to be free at the same time. Rather than make userspace guess at internal filesystem state, we provide a direct query. Signed-off-by: Darrick J. In the first one case, we also get an odd warning about sizeof-pointer-memaccess, which doesn't seem right (the sizeof is for an array that happens to be the same as the second strncpy argument). To work around the bogus warning, I use a plain 'XFSLABEL_MAX' for the strncpy() length when copying the label in getlabel. For setlabel(), using memcpy() with the correct length that is already known avoids the second warning and is slightly simpler. In a related issue, it appears that we accidentally skip the trailing \0 when copying a 12-character label back to user space in getlabel(). xfs: prepare xfs_break_layouts() for another layout type When xfs is operating as the back-end of a pNFS block server, it prevents collisions between local and remote operations by requiring a lease to be held for remotely accessed blocks. Local filesystem operations break those leases before writing or mutating the extent map of the file. A similar mechanism is needed to prevent operations on pinned dax mappings, like device-DMA, from colliding with extent unmap operations. BREAK_WRITE and BREAK_UNMAP are introduced as two distinct levels of layout breaking. Layouts are broken in the BREAK_WRITE case to ensure that layout-holders do not collide with local writes. Additionally, layouts are broken in the BREAK_UNMAP case to make sure the layout-holder has a consistent view of the file's extent map. While BREAK_WRITE breaks can be satisfied be recalling FL_LAYOUT leases, BREAK_UNMAP breaks additionally require waiting for busy dax-pages to go idle while holding XFS_MMAPLOCK_EXCL. After this refactoring xfs_break_layouts() becomes the entry point for coordinating both types of breaks. Finally, xfs_break_leased_layouts() becomes just the BREAK_WRITE handler. Note that the unlock tracking is needed in a follow on change. That will coordinate retrying either break handler until both successfully test for a lease break while maintaining the lock state. xfs: implement online get/set fs label The GET ioctl is trivial, just return the current label. The SET ioctl is more involved: It transactionally modifies the superblock to write a new filesystem label to the primary super. A new variant of xfs_sync_sb then writes the superblock buffer immediately to disk so that the change is visible from userspace. It then invalidates any page cache that userspace might have previously read on the block device so that i.e. blkid can see the change immediately, and updates all secondary superblocks as userspace relable does. xfs: validate bdev support for DAX inode flag Currently only the blocksize is checked, but we should really be calling bdev_dax_supported() which also tests to make sure we can get a struct dax_device and that the dax_direct_access() path is working. This does not fix the race issues that caused the XFS DAX inode option to be disabled, so that option will still be disabled. xfs: fix getfsmap userspace memory corruption while setting OF_LAST At the end of a getfsmap call, we will set FMR_OF_LAST in the last struct fsmap that was handed in by userspace if we've truly run out of space mapping record (as opposed to simply running out of space in the user array). Unfortunately, fmh_entries is the wrong check for whether or not we've filled out anything in the user array because the ioctl provides that fmh_count==0 sets fmh_entries without filling out the user array. Therefore we end up writing things into user memory areas that we weren't given, and kaboom. Since Christoph amended the getfsmap structure to track the number of fsmap entries we've actually filled out, use that as part of deciding if we have to set the OF_LAST flag. xfs: introduce per-inode DAX enablement Rather than just being able to turn DAX on and off via a mount option, some applications may only want to enable DAX for certain performance critical files in a filesystem. This patch introduces a new inode flag to enable DAX in the v3 inode di_flags2 field. It adds support for setting and clearing flags in the di_flags2 field via the XFS_IOC_FSSETXATTR ioctl, and sets the S_DAX inode flag appropriately when it is seen. When this flag is set on a directory, it acts as an "inherit flag". That is, inodes created in the directory will automatically inherit the on-disk inode DAX flag, enabling administrators to set up directory heirarchies that automatically use DAX. Setting this flag on an empty root directory will make the entire filesystem use DAX by default. Signed-off-by: Dave Chinner <dchinner@redhat.com>

xfs: remove the flags argument to xfs_trans_cancel xfs_trans_cancel takes two flags arguments: XFS_TRANS_RELEASE_LOG_RES and XFS_TRANS_ABORT. Both of them are a direct product of the transaction state, and can be deducted: - any dirty transaction needs XFS_TRANS_ABORT to be properly canceled, and XFS_TRANS_ABORT is a noop for a transaction that is not dirty. - any transaction with a permanent log reservation needs XFS_TRANS_RELEASE_LOG_RES to be properly canceled, and passing XFS_TRANS_RELEASE_LOG_RES for a transaction without a permanent log reservation is invalid. xfs: take i_mmap_lock on extent manipulation operations Now we have the i_mmap_lock being held across the page fault IO path, we now add extent manipulation operation exclusion by adding the lock to the paths that directly modify extent maps. This includes truncate, hole punching and other fallocate based operations. The operations will now take both the i_iolock and the i_mmaplock in exclusive mode, thereby ensuring that all IO and page faults block without holding any page locks while the extent manipulation is in progress. This gives us the lock order during truncate of i_iolock -> i_mmaplock -> page_lock -> i_lock, hence providing the same lock order as the iolock provides the normal IO path without involving the mmap_sem. VFS: (Scripted) Convert S_ISLNK/DIR/REG(dentry->d_inode) to d_is_*(dentry) Convert the following where appropriate: (1) S_ISLNK(dentry->d_inode) to d_is_symlink(dentry). (2) S_ISREG(dentry->d_inode) to d_is_reg(dentry). (3) S_ISDIR(dentry->d_inode) to d_is_dir(dentry). This is actually more complicated than it appears as some calls should be converted to d_can_lookup() instead. The difference is whether the directory in question is a real dir with a ->lookup op or whether it's a fake dir with a ->d_automount op. In some circumstances, we can subsume checks for dentry->d_inode not being NULL into this, provided we the code isn't in a filesystem that expects d_inode to be NULL if the dirent really *is* negative (ie. if we're going to use d_inode() rather than d_backing_inode() to get the inode pointer). Note that the dentry type field may be set to something other than DCACHE_MISS_TYPE when d_inode is NULL in the case of unionmount, where the VFS manages the fall-through from a negative dentry to a lower layer. In such a case, the dentry type of the negative union dentry is set to the same as the type of the lower dentry. However, if you know d_inode is not NULL at the call site, then you can use the d_is_xxx() functions even in a filesystem. There is one further complication: a 0,0 chardev dentry may be labelled DCACHE_WHITEOUT_TYPE rather than DCACHE_SPECIAL_TYPE. Strictly, this was intended for special directory entry types that don't have attached inodes. The following perl+coccinelle script was used: use strict; my @callers; open($fd, 'git grep -l \'S_IS[A-Z].*->d_inode\' |') || die "Can't grep for S_ISDIR and co. callers"; @callers = <$fd>; close($fd); unless (@callers) { print "No matches\n"; exit(0); } my @cocci = ( '@@', 'expression E;', '@@', '', '- S_ISLNK(E->d_inode->i_mode)', '+ d_is_symlink(E)', '', '@@', 'expression E;', '@@', '', '- S_ISDIR(E->d_inode->i_mode)', '+ d_is_dir(E)', '', '@@', 'expression E;', '@@', '', '- S_ISREG(E->d_inode->i_mode)', '+ d_is_reg(E)' ); my $coccifile = "tmp.sp.cocci"; open($fd, ">$coccifile") || die $coccifile; print($fd "$_\n") || die $coccifile foreach (@cocci); close($fd); foreach my $file (@callers) { chomp $file; print "Processing ", $file, "\n"; system("spatch", "--sp-file", $coccifile, $file, "--in-place", "--no-show-diff") == 0 || die "spatch failed"; } [AV: overlayfs parts skipped] Signed-off-by: David Howells <dhowells@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>

xfs: allow logical-sector sized O_DIRECT Some time ago, mkfs.xfs started picking the storage physical sector size as the default filesystem "sector size" in order to avoid RMW costs incurred by doing IOs at logical sector size alignments. However, this means that for a filesystem made with i.e. a 4k sector size on an "advanced format" 4k/512 disk, 512-byte direct IOs are no longer allowed. This means that XFS has essentially turned this AF drive into a hard 4K device, from the filesystem on up. XFS's mkfs-specified "sector size" is really just controlling the minimum size & alignment of filesystem metadata. There is no real need to tightly couple XFS's minimal metadata size to the minimum allowed direct IO size; XFS can continue doing metadata in optimal sizes, but still allow smaller DIOs for apps which issue them, for whatever reason. This patch adds a new field to the xfs_buftarg, so that we now track 2 sizes: 1) The metadata sector size, which is the minimum unit and alignment of IO which will be performed by metadata operations. 2) The device logical sector size The first is used internally by the file system for metadata alignment and IOs. The second is used for the minimum allowed direct IO alignment. xfs: decouple inode and bmap btree header files Currently the xfs_inode.h header has a dependency on the definition of the BMAP btree records as the inode fork includes an array of xfs_bmbt_rec_host_t objects in it's definition. Move all the btree format definitions from xfs_btree.h, xfs_bmap_btree.h, xfs_alloc_btree.h and xfs_ialloc_btree.h to xfs_format.h to continue the process of centralising the on-disk format definitions. With this done, the xfs inode definitions are no longer dependent on btree header files. The enables a massive culling of unnecessary includes, with close to 200 #include directives removed from the XFS kernel code base. xfs: decouple log and transaction headers xfs_trans.h has a dependency on xfs_log.h for a couple of structures. Most code that does transactions doesn't need to know anything about the log, but this dependency means that they have to include xfs_log.h. Decouple the xfs_trans.h and xfs_log.h header files and clean up the includes to be in dependency order. In doing this, remove the direct include of xfs_trans_reserve.h from xfs_trans.h so that we remove the dependency between xfs_trans.h and xfs_mount.h. Hence the xfs_trans.h include can be moved to the indicate the actual dependencies other header files have on it. Note that these are kernel only header files, so this does not translate to any userspace changes at all. xfs: create a shared header file for format-related information All of the buffer operations structures are needed to be exported for xfs_db, so move them all to a common location rather than spreading them all over the place. They are verifying the on-disk format, so while xfs_format.h might be a good place, it is not part of the on disk format. Hence we need to create a new header file that we centralise these related definitions. Start by moving the bffer operations structures, and then also move all the other definitions that have crept into xfs_log_format.h and xfs_format.h as there was no other shared header file to put them in. Essentially this move consolidates the inode locking functions and a bunch of XFS inode operations into the one file. Eventually the high level functions will be merged into the VFS interface functions in xfs_iops.c. This leaves only internal preallocation, EOF block manipulation and hole punching functions in vnodeops.c. xfs: create xfs_bmap_util.[ch] There is a bunch of code in xfs_bmap.c that is kernel specific and not shared with userspace. To minimise the difference between the kernel and userspace code, shift this unshared code to xfs_bmap_util.c, and the declarations to xfs_bmap_util.h. The biggest issue here is xfs_bmap_finish() - userspace has it's own definition of this function, and so we need to move it out of xfs_bmap.[ch]. This means several other files need to include xfs_bmap_util.h as well. It also introduces and interesting dance for the stack switching code in xfs_bmapi_allocate(). The stack switching/workqueue code is actually moved to xfs_bmap_util.c, so that userspace can simply use a #define in a header file to connect the dots without needing to know about the stack switch code at all. xfs: use get_unused_fd_flags(0) instead of get_unused_fd() Macro get_unused_fd() is used to allocate a file descriptor with default flags. Those default flags (0) can be "unsafe": O_CLOEXEC must be used by default to not leak file descriptor across exec(). Instead of macro get_unused_fd(), functions anon_inode_getfd() or get_unused_fd_flags() should be used with flags given by userspace. If not possible, flags should be set to O_CLOEXEC to provide userspace with a default safe behavor. In a further patch, get_unused_fd() will be removed so that new code start using anon_inode_getfd() or get_unused_fd_flags() with correct flags. This patch replaces calls to get_unused_fd() with equivalent call to get_unused_fd_flags(0) to preserve current behavor for existing code.
