net: ethernet: cadence: Convert to platform remove callback returning void The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is ignored (apart from emitting a warning) and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns void. Eventually after all drivers are converted, .remove_new() is renamed to .remove(). Trivially convert this driver from always returning zero in the remove callback to the void returning variant. This seems safe as rx and tx are both disabled anyway at this point. It is however not entirely clear what the spinlock shall protect. It could be the read-modify-write access to the NCFGR register, but this is accessed in macb_set_rx_mode() and macb_set_rxcsum_feature() as well without holding the spinlock. It could also be the register accesses done in mog_init_rings() or macb_init_buffers(), but again these functions are called without holding the spinlock in macb_hresp_error_task(). The locking seems fishy in this driver and it might deserve another look before this patch is applied. net: Explicitly include correct DT includes The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate of_platform_bus_type before it as merged into the regular platform bus. As part of that merge prepping Arm DT support 13 years ago, they "temporarily" include each other. They also include platform_device.h and of.h. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include files used throughout the tree. In order to detangle these headers and replace the implicit includes with struct declarations, users need to explicitly include the correct includes. This leads to xilinx-psgtr "PLL lock timeout" on interface bringup, as the power management controller power down the entire FPD (including SERDES) if none of the FPD devices are in use and serdes is not initialized on resume. $ sudo rtcwake -m no -s 120 -v $ sudo systemctl suspend <this does ifconfig eth1 down> $ ifconfig eth1 up xilinx-psgtr fd400000.phy: lane 0 (type 10, protocol 5): PLL lock timeout phy phy-fd400000.phy.0: phy poweron failed --> -110 macb driver is called in this way: 1. macb_close: Stop network interface. In this function, it reset MACB IP and disables PHY and network interface. 2. macb_suspend: It is called in kernel suspend flow. But because network interface has been disabled(netif_running(ndev) is false), it does nothing and returns directly; 3. System goes into suspend state. Some time later, system is waken up by RTC wakeup device; 4. macb_resume: It does nothing because network interface has been disabled; 5. macb_open: It is called to enable network interface again. ethernet interface is initialized in this API but serdes which is power-off by PMUFW during FPD-off suspend is not initialized again and so we hit GT PLL lock issue on open. The macb driver didn't mask this bit while getting an address and it eventually caused a memory corruption and a dma failure. net: macb: fix PTP TX timestamp failure due to packet padding PTP TX timestamp handling was observed to be broken with this driver when using the raw Layer 2 PTP encapsulation. ptp4l was not receiving the expected TX timestamp after transmitting a packet, causing it to enter a failure state. The problem appears to be due to the way that the driver pads packets which are smaller than the Ethernet minimum of 60 bytes. If headroom space was available in the SKB, this caused the driver to move the data back to utilize it. However, this appears to cause other data references in the SKB to become inconsistent. In particular, this caused the ptp_one_step_sync function to later (in the TX completion path) falsely detect the packet as a one-step SYNC packet, even when it was not, which caused the TX timestamp to not be processed when it should be. Using the headroom for this purpose seems like an unnecessary complexity as this is not a hot path in the driver, and in most cases it appears that there is sufficient tailroom to not require using the headroom anyway. Remove this usage of headroom to prevent this inconsistency from occurring and causing other problems. net: macb: use NAPI for TX completion path This driver was using the TX IRQ handler to perform all TX completion tasks. Under heavy TX network load, this can cause significant irqs-off latencies (found to be in the hundreds of microseconds using ftrace). This can cause other issues, such as overrunning serial UART FIFOs when using high baud rates with limited UART FIFO sizes. Switch to using a NAPI poll handler to perform the TX completion work to get this out of hard IRQ context and avoid the IRQ latency impact. A separate NAPI instance is used for TX and RX to avoid checking the other ring's state unnecessarily when doing the poll, and so that the NAPI budget handling can work for both TX and RX packets. A new per-queue tx_ptr_lock spinlock has been added to avoid using the main device lock (with IRQs needing to be disabled) across the entire TX mapping operation, and also to protect the TX queue pointers from concurrent access between the TX start and TX poll operations. The TX Used Bit Read interrupt (TXUBR) handling also needs to be moved into the TX NAPI poll handler to maintain the proper order of operations. A flag is used to notify the poll handler that a UBR condition needs to be handled. The macb_tx_restart handler has had some locking added for global register access, since this could now potentially happen concurrently on different queues. net: macb: simplify/cleanup NAPI reschedule checking Previously the macb_poll method was checking the RSR register after completing its RX receive work to see if additional packets had been received since IRQs were disabled, since this controller does not maintain the pending IRQ status across IRQ disable. It also had to double-check the register after re-enabling IRQs to detect if packets were received after the first check but before IRQs were enabled. Using the RSR register for this purpose is problematic since it reflects the global device state rather than the per-queue state, so if packets are being received on multiple queues it may end up retriggering receive on a queue where the packets did not actually arrive and not on the one where they did arrive. This will also cause problems with an upcoming change to use NAPI for the TX path where use of multiple queues is more likely. Add a macb_rx_pending function to check the RX ring to see if more packets have arrived in the queue, and use that to check if NAPI should be rescheduled rather than the RSR register. By doing this, we can just ignore the global RSR register entirely, and thus save some extra device register accesses at the same time. This also makes the previous first check for pending packets rather redundant, since it would be checking the RX ring state which was just checked in the receive work function. Therefore we can get rid of it and just check after enabling interrupts whether packets are already pending. net: macb: Restart tx only if queue pointer is lagging commit 4298388574da ("net: macb: restart tx after tx used bit read") added support for restarting transmission. Restarting tx does not work in case controller asserts TXUBR interrupt and TQBP is already at the end of the tx queue. In that situation, restarting tx will immediately cause assertion of another TXUBR interrupt. The driver will end up in an infinite interrupt loop which it cannot break out of. For cases where TQBP is at the end of the tx queue, instead only clear TX_USED interrupt. As more data gets pushed to the queue, transmission will resume. This issue was observed on a Xilinx Zynq-7000 based board. During stress test of the network interface, driver would get stuck on interrupt loop within seconds or minutes causing CPU to stall. net: macb: Fix lost RX packet wakeup race in NAPI receive There is an oddity in the way the RSR register flags propagate to the ISR register (and the actual interrupt output) on this hardware: it appears that RSR register bits only result in ISR being asserted if the interrupt was actually enabled at the time, so enabling interrupts with RSR bits already set doesn't trigger an interrupt to be raised. There was already a partial fix for this race in the macb_poll function where it checked for RSR bits being set and re-triggered NAPI receive. However, there was a still a race window between checking RSR and actually enabling interrupts, where a lost wakeup could happen. It's necessary to check again after enabling interrupts to see if RSR was set just prior to the interrupt being enabled, and re-trigger receive in that case. This issue was noticed in a point-to-point UDP request-response protocol which periodically saw timeouts or abnormally high response times due to received packets not being processed in a timely fashion. In many applications, more packets arriving, including TCP retransmissions, would cause the original packet to be processed, thus masking the issue. net: macb: Fix several edge cases in validate There were several cases where validate() would return bogus supported modes with unusual combinations of interfaces and capabilities. For example, if state->interface was 10GBASER and the macb had HIGH_SPEED and PCS but not GIGABIT MODE, then 10/100 modes would be set anyway. In another case, SGMII could be enabled even if the mac was not a GEM (despite this being checked for later on in mac_config()). These inconsistencies make it difficult to refactor this function cleanly. There is still the open question of what exactly the requirements for SGMII and 10GBASER are, and what SGMII actually supports. If someone from Cadence (or anyone else with access to the GEM/MACB datasheet) could comment on this, it would be greatly appreciated. In particular, what is supported by Cadence vs. vendor extension/limitation? To address this, the current logic is split into three parts. First, we determine what we support, then we eliminate unsupported interfaces, and finally we set the appropriate link modes. There is still some cruft related to NA, but this can be removed in a future patch. of: net: pass the dst buffer to of_get_mac_address() of_get_mac_address() returns a "const void*" pointer to a MAC address. Lately, support to fetch the MAC address by an NVMEM provider was added. But this will only work with platform devices. It will not work with PCI devices (e.g. of an integrated root complex) and esp. not with DSA ports. There is an of_* variant of the nvmem binding which works without devices. The returned data of a nvmem_cell_read() has to be freed after use. On the other hand the return of_get_mac_address() points to some static data without a lifetime. The trick for now, was to allocate a device resource managed buffer which is then returned. This will only work if we have an actual device. Change it, so that the caller of of_get_mac_address() has to supply a buffer where the MAC address is written to. Unfortunately, this will touch all drivers which use the of_get_mac_address(). Usually the code looks like: const char *addr; addr = of_get_mac_address(np); if (!IS_ERR(addr)) ether_addr_copy(ndev->dev_addr, addr); This can then be simply rewritten as: of_get_mac_address(np, ndev->dev_addr); Sometimes is_valid_ether_addr() is used to test the MAC address. of_get_mac_address() already makes sure, it just returns a valid MAC address. Thus we can just test its return code. But we have to be careful if there are still other sources for the MAC address before the of_get_mac_address(). In this case we have to keep the is_valid_ether_addr() call. The following coccinelle patch was used to convert common cases to the new style. Afterwards, I've manually gone over the drivers and fixed the return code variable: either used a new one or if one was already available use that. Mansour Moufid, thanks for that coccinelle patch! <spml> @a@ identifier x; expression y, z; @@ - x = of_get_mac_address(y); + x = of_get_mac_address(y, z); <... - ether_addr_copy(z, x); ...> @@ identifier a.x; @@ - if (<+... x ...+>) {} @@ identifier a.x; @@ if (<+... x ...+>) { ... } - else {} @@ identifier a.x; expression e; @@ - if (<+... x ...+>@e) - {} - else + if (!(e)) {...} @@ expression x, y, z; @@ - x = of_get_mac_address(y, z); + of_get_mac_address(y, z); ... when != x </spml> All drivers, except drivers/net/ethernet/aeroflex/greth.c, were compile-time tested. Revert "macb: support the two tx descriptors on at91rm9200" This reverts commit 0a4e9ce17ba77847e5a9f87eed3c0ba46e3f82eb. The code was developed and tested on an MSC313E SoC, which seems to be half-way between the AT91RM9200 and the AT91SAM9260 in that it supports both the 2-descriptors mode and a Tx ring. It turns out that after the code was merged I could notice that the controller would sometimes lock up, and only when dealing with sustained bidirectional transfers, in which case it would report a Tx overrun condition right after having reported being ready, and will stop sending even after the status is cleared (a down/up cycle fixes it though). After adding lots of traces I couldn't spot a sequence pattern allowing to predict that this situation would happen. The chip comes with no documentation and other bits are often reported with no conclusive pattern either. It is possible that my change is wrong just like it is possible that the controller on the chip is bogus or at least unpredictable based on existing docs from other chips. I do not have an RM9200 at hand to test at the moment and a few tests run on a more recent 9G20 indicate that this code path cannot be used there to test the code on a 3rd platform. Since the MSC313E works fine in the single-descriptor mode, and that people using the old RM9200 very likely favor stability over performance, better revert this patch until we can test it on the original platform this part of the driver was written for. Note that the reverted patch was actually tested on MSC313E. net: macb: add support for high speed interface This patch adds support for 10GBASE-R interface to the linux driver for Cadence's ethernet controller. This controller has separate MAC's and PCS'es for low and high speed paths. High speed PCS supports 100M, 1G, 2.5G, 5G and 10G through rate adaptation implementation. However, since it doesn't support auto negotiation, linux driver is modified to support 10GBASE-R instead of USXGMII. macb: support the two tx descriptors on at91rm9200 The at91rm9200 variant used by a few chips including the MSC313 supports two Tx descriptors (one frame being serialized and another one queued). However the driver only implemented a single one, which adds a dead time after each transfer to receive and process the interrupt and wake the queue up, preventing from reaching line rate. This patch implements a very basic 2-deep queue to address this limitation. The tests run on a Breadbee board equipped with an MSC313E show that at 1 GHz, HTTP traffic on medium-sized objects (45kB) was limited to exactly 50 Mbps before this patch, and jumped to 76 Mbps with this patch. And tests on a single TCP stream with an MTU of 576 jump from 10kpps to 15kpps. With 1500 byte packets it's now possible to reach line rate versus 75 Mbps before. macb: prepare at91 to use a 2-frame TX queue The RM9200 supports one frame being sent while another one is waiting in queue. This avoids the dead time that follows the emission of a frame and which prevents one from reaching line speed. Right now the driver supports only a single skb, so we'll first replace the rm9200-specific skb info with an array of two macb_tx_skb (already used by other drivers). This patch only moves the skb_length to txq[0].size and skb_physaddr to skb[0].mapping but doesn't perform any other change. It already uses [desc] in order to minimize future changes. drivers/net/ethernet: clean up mis-targeted comments As part of the W=1 cleanups for ethernet, a million [*] driver comments had to be cleaned up to get the W=1 compilation to succeed. This change finally makes the drivers/net/ethernet tree compile with W=1 set on the command line. net: macb: WoL support for GEM type of Ethernet controller Adapt the Wake-on-Lan feature to the Cadence GEM Ethernet controller. This controller has different register layout and cannot be handled by previous code. We disable completely interrupts on all the queues but the queue 0. Handling of WoL interrupt is done in another interrupt handler positioned depending on the controller version used, just between suspend() and resume() calls. It allows to lower pressure on the generic interrupt hot path by removing the need to handle 2 tests for each IRQ: the first figuring out the controller revision, the second for actually knowing if the WoL bit is set. net: macb: mark device wake capable when "magic-packet" property present Change the way the "magic-packet" DT property is handled in the macb_probe() function, matching DT binding documentation. Now we mark the device as "wakeup capable" instead of calling the device_init_wakeup() function that would enable the wakeup source. For Ethernet WoL, enabling the wakeup_source is done by using ethtool and associated macb_set_wol() function that already calls device_set_wakeup_enable() for this purpose. That would reduce power consumption by cutting more clocks if "magic-packet" property is set but WoL is not configured by ethtool. net: macb: Limit maximum GEM TX length in TSO GEM_MAX_TX_LEN currently resolves to 0x3FF8 for any IP version supporting TSO with full 14bits of length field in payload descriptor. But an IP errata causes false amba_error (bit 6 of ISR) when length in payload descriptors is specified above 16387. The error occurs because the DMA falsely concludes that there is not enough space in SRAM for incoming payload. These errors were observed continuously under stress of large packets using iperf on a version where SRAM was 16K for each queue. macb: Don't unregister clks unconditionally The only clk init function in this driver that register a clk is fu540_c000_clk_init(), and thus we need to unregister the clk when this driver is removed on that platform. Other init functions, for example macb_clk_init(), don't register clks and therefore we shouldn't unregister the clks when this driver is removed. Convert this registration path to devm so it gets auto-unregistered when this driver is removed and drop the clk_unregister() calls in driver remove (and error paths) so that we don't erroneously remove a clk from the system that isn't registered by this driver. Otherwise we get strange crashes with a use-after-free when the devm_clk_get() call in macb_clk_init() calls clk_put() on a clk pointer that has become invalid because it is freed in clk_unregister(). net: macb: fix probing of PHY not described in the dt This patch fixes the case where the PHY isn't described in the device tree. This is due to the way the MDIO bus is registered in the driver: whether the PHY is described in the device tree or not, the bus is registered through of_mdiobus_register. The function masks all the PHYs and only allow probing the ones described in the device tree. Prior to the Phylink conversion this was also done but later on in the driver the MDIO bus was manually scanned to circumvent the fact that the PHY wasn't described. This patch fixes it in a proper way, by registering the MDIO bus based on if the PHY attached to a given interface is described in the device tree or not. In these cases, the driver would probe successfully but will never be able to adjust the clocks, because the clocks were not available during probe, but became available later. For example, the clock controller for the ZynqMP is implemented in the PMU firmware and the clocks are only available after the firmware driver has been probed. Use devm_clk_get_optional() in instead of devm_clk_get() to get the optional clock and propagate all errors to the calling function. net: macb: add missing barriers when reading descriptors When reading buffer descriptors on RX or on TX completion, an RX_USED/TX_USED bit is checked first to ensure that the descriptors have been populated, i.e. the ownership has been transferred. However, there are no memory barriers to ensure that the data protected by the RX_USED/TX_USED bit is up-to-date with respect to that bit. Specifically: - TX timestamp descriptors may be loaded before ctrl is loaded for the TX_USED check, which is racy as the descriptors may be updated between the loads, causing old timestamp descriptor data to be used. - RX ctrl may be loaded before addr is loaded for the RX_USED check, which is racy as a new frame may be written between the loads, causing old ctrl descriptor data to be used. This issue exists for both macb_rx() and gem_rx() variants. Fix the races by adding DMA read memory barriers on those paths and reordering the reads in macb_rx(). I have not observed any actual problems in practice caused by these being missing, though. Tested on a ZynqMP based system. net: macb: fix random memory corruption on RX with 64-bit DMA 64-bit DMA addresses are split in upper and lower halves that are written in separate fields on GEM. For RX, bit 0 of the address is used as the ownership bit (RX_USED). When the RX_USED bit is unset the controller is allowed to write data to the buffer. The driver does not guarantee that the controller already sees the upper half when the RX_USED bit is cleared, possibly resulting in the controller writing an incoming frame to an address with an incorrect upper half and therefore possibly corrupting unrelated system memory. Fix that by adding the necessary DMA memory barrier between the writes. This corruption was observed on a ZynqMP based system. net: macb: do not disable MDIO bus at open/close time macb_reset_hw() is called from macb_close() and indirectly from macb_open(). macb_reset_hw() zeroes the NCR register, including the MPE (Management Port Enable) bit. This will prevent accessing any other PHYs for other Ethernet MACs on the MDIO bus, which remains registered at macb_reset_hw() time, until macb_init_hw() is called from macb_open() which sets the MPE bit again. I.e. currently the MDIO bus has a short disruption at open time and is disabled at close time until the interface is opened again. net: macb: Allocate valid memory for TX and RX BD prefetch GEM version in ZynqMP and most versions greater than r1p07 supports TX and RX BD prefetch. The number of BDs that can be prefetched is a HW configurable parameter. For ZynqMP, this parameter is 4. When GEM DMA is accessing the last BD in the ring, even before the BD is processed and the WRAP bit is noticed, it will have prefetched BDs outside the BD ring. These will not be processed but it is necessary to have accessible memory after the last BD. Especially in cases where SMMU is used, memory locations immediately after the last BD may not have translation tables triggering HRESP errors. Hence always allocate extra BDs to accommodate for prefetch. The value of tx/rx bd prefetch for any given SoC version is: 2 ^ (corresponding field in design config 10 register). net: macb: reduce scope of rx_fs_lock-protected regions Commit ae8223de3df5 ("net: macb: Added support for RX filtering") introduces a lock, rx_fs_lock which is intended to protect the list of rx_flow items and synchronize access to the hardware rx filtering registers. However, the region protected by this lock is overscoped, unnecessarily including things like slab allocation. Reduce this lock scope to only include operations which must be performed atomically: list traversal, addition, and removal, and hitting the macb filtering registers. This fixes the use of kmalloc w/ GFP_KERNEL in atomic context.
