dm mpath: provide high-resolution timer to HST for bio-based The precision loss of reading IO start_time with jiffies_to_nsecs instead of using a high resolution timer degrades HST path prediction for BIO-based mpath on high load workloads. Below, I show the utilization percentage of a 10 disk multipath with asymmetrical disk access cost, while being exercised by a randwrite FIO benchmark with high submission queue depth (depth=64). It is possible to see that the HST path selection degrades heavily for high-iops in BIO-mpath, underutilizing the slower paths way beyond expected. This seems to be caused by the start_time truncation, which makes some IO to seem much slower than it actually is. In this scenario ST outperforms HST for bio-mpath, but not for mq-mpath, which already uses ktime_get_ns(). The third column shows utilization with this patch applied. Regarding the implementation, as suggested by Mike in that mail thread, in order to avoid the overhead of ktime_get_ns for other selectors, this patch adds a flag for the selector code to request the high-resolution timer. I tested this using the same benchmark used in the original HST submission. dm ima: update dm target attributes for ima measurements Certain DM targets ('integrity', 'multipath', 'verity') need to update the way their attributes are recorded in the ima log, so that the attestation servers can interpret the data correctly and decide if the devices meet the attestation requirements. For instance, the "mode=%c" attribute in the 'integrity' target is measured twice, the 'verity' target is missing the attribute "root_hash_sig_key_desc=%s", and the 'multipath' target needs to index the attributes properly. Update 'integrity' target to remove the duplicate measurement of the attribute "mode=%c". Add "root_hash_sig_key_desc=%s" attribute for the 'verity' target. Index various attributes in 'multipath' target. Also, add "nr_priority_groups=%u" attribute to 'multipath' target to record the number of priority groups. dm: update target status functions to support IMA measurement For device mapper targets to take advantage of IMA's measurement capabilities, the status functions for the individual targets need to be updated to handle the status_type_t case for value STATUSTYPE_IMA. Update status functions for the following target types, to log their respective attributes to be measured using IMA. 01. cache 02. crypt 03. integrity 04. linear 05. mirror 06. multipath 07. raid 08. snapshot 09. striped 10. verity For rest of the targets, handle the STATUSTYPE_IMA case by setting the measurement buffer to NULL. For IMA to measure the data on a given system, the IMA policy on the system needs to be updated to have the following line, and the system needs to be restarted for the measurements to take effect. /etc/ima/ima-policy measure func=CRITICAL_DATA label=device-mapper template=ima-buf The measurements will be reflected in the IMA logs, which are located at: /sys/kernel/security/integrity/ima/ascii_runtime_measurements /sys/kernel/security/integrity/ima/binary_runtime_measurements These IMA logs can later be consumed by various attestation clients running on the system, and send them to external services for attesting the system. The DM target data measured by IMA subsystem can alternatively be queried from userspace by setting DM_IMA_MEASUREMENT_FLAG with DM_TABLE_STATUS_CMD. dm mpath: fix racey management of PG initialization Commit 935fcc56abc3 ("dm mpath: only flush workqueue when needed") changed flush_multipath_work() to avoid needless workqueue flushing (of a multipath global workqueue). But that change didn't realize the surrounding flush_multipath_work() code should also only run if 'pg_init_in_progress' is set. Fix this by only doing all of flush_multipath_work()'s PG init related work if 'pg_init_in_progress' is set. Otherwise multipath_wait_for_pg_init_completion() will run unconditionally but the preceeding flush_workqueue(kmpath_handlerd) may not. This could lead to deadlock (though only if kmpath_handlerd never runs a corresponding work to decrement 'pg_init_in_progress'). It could also be, though highly unlikely, that the kmpath_handlerd work that does PG init completes before 'pg_init_in_progress' is set, and then an intervening DM table reload's multipath_postsuspend() triggers flush_multipath_work(). dm mpath: restrict queue_if_no_path state machine Do not allow saving disabled queue_if_no_path if already saved as enabled; implies multiple suspends (which shouldn't ever happen). Log if this unlikely scenario is ever triggered. Also, only write MPATHF_SAVED_QUEUE_IF_NO_PATH during presuspend or if "fail_if_no_path" message. MPATHF_SAVED_QUEUE_IF_NO_PATH is no longer always modified, e.g.: even if queue_if_no_path()'s save_old_value argument wasn't set. This just implies a bit tighter control over the management of MPATHF_SAVED_QUEUE_IF_NO_PATH. Side-effect is multipath_resume() doesn't reset MPATHF_QUEUE_IF_NO_PATH unless MPATHF_SAVED_QUEUE_IF_NO_PATH was set (during presuspend); and at that time the MPATHF_SAVED_QUEUE_IF_NO_PATH bit gets cleared. So MPATHF_SAVED_QUEUE_IF_NO_PATH's use is much more narrow in scope. Last, but not least, do _not_ disable queue_if_no_path during noflush suspend. There is no need/benefit to saving off queue_if_no_path via MPATHF_SAVED_QUEUE_IF_NO_PATH and clearing MPATHF_QUEUE_IF_NO_PATH for noflush suspend -- by avoiding this needless queue_if_no_path flag churn there is less potential for MPATHF_QUEUE_IF_NO_PATH to get lost. Which avoids potential for IOs to be errored back up to userspace during DM multipath's handling of path failures. That said, this last change papers over a reported issue concerning request-based dm-multipath's interaction with blk-mq, relative to suspend and resume: multipath_endio is being called _before_ multipath_resume. This should never happen if DM suspend's blk_mq_quiesce_queue() + dm_wait_for_completion() is genuinely waiting for all inflight blk-mq requests to complete. Similarly: drivers/md/dm.c:__dm_resume() clearly calls dm_table_resume_targets() _before_ dm_start_queue()'s blk_mq_unquiesce_queue() is called. If the queue isn't even restarted until after multipath_resume(); the BIG question that still needs answering is: how can multipath_end_io beat multipath_resume in a race!? dm mpath: switch paths in dm_blk_ioctl() code path SCSI LUN passthrough code such as qemu's "scsi-block" device model pass every IO to the host via SG_IO ioctls. Currently, dm-multipath calls choose_pgpath() only in the block IO code path, not in the ioctl code path (unless current_pgpath is NULL). This has the effect that no path switching and thus no load balancing is done for SCSI-passthrough IO, unless the active path fails. Fix this by using the same logic in multipath_prepare_ioctl() as in multipath_clone_and_map(). Note: The allegedly best path selection algorithm, service-time, still wouldn't work perfectly, because the io size of the current request is always set to 0. Changing that for the IO passthrough case would require the ioctl cmd and arg to be passed to dm's prepare_ioctl() method. dm multipath: use updated MPATHF_QUEUE_IO on mapping for bio-based mpath When adding devices that don't have a scsi_dh on a BIO based multipath, I was able to consistently hit the warning below and lock-up the system. The problem is that __map_bio reads the flag before it potentially being modified by choose_pgpath, and ends up using the older value. The WARN_ON below is not trivially linked to the issue. It goes like this: The activate_path delayed_work is not initialized for non-scsi_dh devices, but we always set MPATHF_QUEUE_IO, asking for initialization. That is fine, since MPATHF_QUEUE_IO would be cleared in choose_pgpath. Nevertheless, only for BIO-based mpath, we cache the flag before calling choose_pgpath, and use the older version when deciding if we should initialize the path. Therefore, we end up trying to initialize the paths, and calling the non-initialized activate_path work. dm mpath: Add timeout mechanism for queue_if_no_path Add a configurable timeout mechanism to disable queue_if_no_path without assistance from userspace multipathd. This reimplements multipathd's no_path_retry mechanism in kernel space. This is motivated by the desire to prevent processes from hanging indefinitely waiting for IO in cases where multipathd might be unable to respond (after a failure or for whatever reason). Despite replicating userspace multipathd's policy configuration in kernel space, it is important to prevent IOs from hanging forever, waiting for userspace that may be incapable of behaving correctly. Use of the provided "queue_if_no_path_timeout_secs" dm-multipath module parameter is optional. This timeout mechanism is disabled by default (by being set to 0). dm mpath: remove harmful bio-based optimization Removes the branching for edge-case where no SCSI device handler exists. The __map_bio_fast() method was far too limited, by only selecting a new pathgroup or path IFF there was a path failure, fix this be eliminating it in favor of __map_bio(). __map_bio()'s extra SCSI device handler specific MPATHF_PG_INIT_REQUIRED test is not in the fast path anyway. This change restores full path selector functionality for bio-based configurations that don't haave a SCSI device handler. But it should be noted that the path selectors do have an impact on performance for certain networks that are extremely fast (and don't require frequent switching). dm mpath: fix missing call of path selector type->end_io After commit 396eaf21ee17 ("blk-mq: improve DM's blk-mq IO merging via blk_insert_cloned_request feedback"), map_request() will requeue the tio when issued clone request return BLK_STS_RESOURCE or BLK_STS_DEV_RESOURCE. Thus, if device driver status is error, a tio may be requeued multiple times until the return value is not DM_MAPIO_REQUEUE. That means type->start_io may be called multiple times, while type->end_io is only called when IO complete. In fact, even without commit 396eaf21ee17, setup_clone() failure can also cause tio requeue and associated missed call to type->end_io. The service-time path selector selects path based on in_flight_size, which is increased by st_start_io() and decreased by st_end_io(). Missed calls to st_end_io() can lead to in_flight_size count error and will cause the selector to make the wrong choice. In addition, queue-length path selector will also be affected. To fix the problem, call type->end_io in ->release_clone_rq before tio requeue. map_info is passed to ->release_clone_rq() for map_request() error path that result in requeue. dm mpath: remove unnecessary NVMe branching in favor of scsi_dh checks This eliminates the "queue_mode" configuration's "nvme" mode. There wasn't anything NVMe-specific about that mode. It was named "nvme" because it was a short name for the mode. But the entire point of the mode was to optimize the multipath target for underlying devices that are _not_ SCSI-based. Devices that aren't SCSI have no need for the various SCSI device handler (scsi_dh) specific code in DM multipath. But rather than narrowly define this scsi_dh vs not branching in terms of "nvme": invert the logic so that we're just checking whether a multipath device is layered on SCSI devices with scsi_dh attached. This allows any future storage technology to avoid scsi_dh specific code in the multipath target too. Restoring the logic that existed prior to commit ca5beb76 fixes this bio-based DM-multipath regression. Also verified all mptest tests pass with request-based DM-multipath. This commit effectively reverts commit ca5beb76 -- but it does so without reintroducing the need to take the m->lock spinlock in must_push_back_{rq,bio}. dm mpath: remove annoying message of 'blk_get_request() returned -11' It is very normal to see allocation failure, especially with blk-mq request_queues, so it's unnecessary to report this error and annoy people. In practice this 'blk_get_request() returned -11' error gets logged quite frequently when a blk-mq DM multipath device sees heavy IO. block: replace bi_bdev with a gendisk pointer and partitions index This way we don't need a block_device structure to submit I/O. The block_device has different life time rules from the gendisk and request_queue and is usually only available when the block device node is open. Other callers need to explicitly create one (e.g. the lightnvm passthrough code, or the new nvme multipathing code). For the actual I/O path all that we need is the gendisk, which exists once per block device. But given that the block layer also does partition remapping we additionally need a partition index, which is used for said remapping in generic_make_request. Note that all the block drivers generally want request_queue or sometimes the gendisk, so this removes a layer of indirection all over the stack. block: introduce new block status code type Currently we use nornal Linux errno values in the block layer, and while we accept any error a few have overloaded magic meanings. This patch instead introduces a new blk_status_t value that holds block layer specific status codes and explicitly explains their meaning. Helpers to convert from and to the previous special meanings are provided for now, but I suspect we want to get rid of them in the long run - those drivers that have a errno input (e.g. networking) usually get errnos that don't know about the special block layer overloads, and similarly returning them to userspace will usually return somethings that strictly speaking isn't correct for file system operations, but that's left as an exercise for later. For now the set of errors is a very limited set that closely corresponds to the previous overloaded errno values, but there is some low hanging fruite to improve it. blk_status_t (ab)uses the sparse __bitwise annotations to allow for sparse typechecking, so that we can easily catch places passing the wrong values. dm: always defer request allocation to the owner of the request_queue DM already calls blk_mq_alloc_request on the request_queue of the underlying device if it is a blk-mq device. But now that we allow drivers to allocate additional data and initialize it ahead of time we need to do the same for all drivers. Doing so and using the new cmd_size infrastructure in the block layer greatly simplifies the dm-rq and mpath code, and should also make arbitrary combinations of SQ and MQ devices with SQ or MQ device mapper tables easily possible as a further step. dm mpath: always return reservation conflict without failing over If dm-mpath encounters an reservation conflict it should not fail the path (as communication with the target is not affected) but should rather retry on another path. However, in doing so we might be inducing a ping-pong between paths, with no guarantee of any forward progress. And arguably a reservation conflict is an unexpected error, so we should be passing it upwards to allow the application to take appropriate steps. This change resolves a show-stopper problem seen with the pNFS SCSI layout because it is trivial to hit reservation conflict based failover loops without it. Doubts were raised about the implications of this change relative to products like IBM's SVC. But there is little point withholding a fix for Linux because a proprietary product may or may not have some issues in its implementation of how it interfaces with Linux. In the future, if there is glaring evidence that this change is certainly problematic we can revisit it. Also, return false from .busy, if all paths are down, so that blk-mq requests get mapped via .clone_and_map_rq -- which results in DM_MAPIO_DELAY_REQUEUE being returned to dm-rq. block: rename bio bi_rw to bi_opf Since commit 63a4cc24867d, bio->bi_rw contains flags in the lower portion and the op code in the higher portions. This means that old code that relies on manually setting bi_rw is most likely going to be broken. Instead of letting that brokeness linger, rename the member, to force old and out-of-tree code to break at compile time instead of at runtime. No intended functional changes in this commit. dm mpath: add optional "queue_mode" feature Allow a user to specify an optional feature 'queue_mode <mode>' where <mode> may be "bio", "rq" or "mq" -- which corresponds to bio-based, request_fn rq-based, and blk-mq rq-based respectively. If the queue_mode feature isn't specified the default for the "multipath" target is still "rq" but if dm_mod.use_blk_mq is set to Y it'll default to mode "mq". This new queue_mode feature introduces the ability for each multipath device to have its own queue_mode (whereas before this feature all multipath devices effectively had to have the same queue_mode). This commit also goes a long way to eliminate the awkward (ab)use of DM_TYPE_*, the associated filter_md_type() and other relatively fragile and difficult to maintain code. dm mpath: reinstate bio-based support Add "multipath-bio" target that offers a bio-based multipath target as an alternative to the request-based "multipath" target -- but in a following commit "multipath-bio" will immediately be replaced by a new "queue_mode" feature for the "multipath" target which will allow bio-based mode to be selected. When DM multipath was originally converted from bio-based to request-based the motivation for the change was better dynamic load balancing (by leveraging block core's request-based IO schedulers, for merging and sorting, _before_ DM multipath would make the decision on where to steer the IO -- based on path load and/or availability). More background is available in this "Request-based Device-mapper multipath and Dynamic load balancing" paper: https://www.kernel.org/doc/ols/2007/ols2007v2-pages-235-244.pdf But we've now come full circle where significantly faster storage devices no longer need IOs to be made larger to drive optimal IO performance. And even if they do there have been changes to the block and filesystem layers that help ensure upper layers are constructing larger IOs. In addition, SCSI's differentiated IO errors will propagate through to bio-based IO completion hooks -- so that eliminates another historic justiciation for request-based DM multipath. Lastly, the block layer's immutable biovec changes have made bio cloning cheaper than it has ever been; whereas request cloning is still relatively expensive (both on a CPU usage and memory footprint level). dm mpath: eliminate use of spinlock in IO fast-paths The primary motivation of this commit is to improve the scalability of DM multipath on large NUMA systems where m->lock spinlock contention has been proven to be a serious bottleneck on really fast storage. The ability to atomically read a pointer, using lockless_dereference(), is leveraged in this commit. But all pointer writes are still protected by the m->lock spinlock (which is fine since these all now occur in the slow-path). The following functions no longer require the m->lock spinlock in their fast-path: multipath_busy(), __multipath_map(), and do_end_io() And choose_pgpath() is modified to _not_ update m->current_pgpath unless it also switches the path-group. This is done to avoid needing to take the m->lock everytime __multipath_map() calls choose_pgpath(). But m->current_pgpath will be reset if it is failed via fail_path(). There is really no need for it anymore now that DM multipath is request-based. As such, repeat_count > 1 is no longer honored and a warning is displayed if the user attempts to use a value > 1. Leverage this fact in dm_mq_queue_rq() by using the 'immutable_target' stored in the mapped_device when the table was made active. This saves the need to even take the read-side of the SRCU via dm_{get,put}_live_table. If the active DM table does not have an immutable target (e.g. "error" target was swapped in) then fallback to the slow-path where the target is looked up from the live table. dm: fix ioctl retry termination with signal dm-mpath retries ioctl, when no path is readily available and the device is configured to queue I/O in such a case. If you want to stop the retry before multipathd decides to turn off queueing mode, you could send signal for the process to exit from the loop. However the check of fatal signal has not carried along when commit 6c182cd88d17 ("dm mpath: fix ioctl deadlock when no paths") moved the loop from dm-mpath to dm core. As a result, we can't terminate such a process in the retry loop. Easy reproducer of the situation is: # dmsetup create mp --table '0 1024 multipath 0 0 0 0' # dmsetup message mp 0 'queue_if_no_path' # sg_inq /dev/mapper/mp then you should be able to terminate sg_inq by pressing Ctrl+C. Revert "dm mpath: fix stalls when handling invalid ioctls" This reverts commit a1989b330093578ea5470bea0a00f940c444c466. That commit introduced a regression at least for the case of the SG_IO ioctl() running without CAP_SYS_RAWIO capability (e.g., unprivileged users) when there are no active paths: the ioctl() fails with the ENOTTY errno immediately rather than blocking due to queue_if_no_path until a path becomes active, for example. That case happens to be exercised by QEMU KVM guests with 'scsi-block' devices (qemu "-device scsi-block" [1], libvirt "<disk type='block' device='lun'>" [2]) from multipath devices; which leads to SCSI/filesystem errors in such a guest. More general scenarios can hit that regression too. The following demonstration employs a SG_IO ioctl() with a standard SCSI INQUIRY command for this objective (some output & user changes omitted for brevity and comments added for clarity). dm-mpath, scsi_dh: don't let dm detach device handlers While allowing dm-mpath to attach device handlers is a functionality we need for backwards compatibility reason there is no reason to reference count them and detach them if dm-mpath stops using the device for some reason. dm: optimize dm_mq_queue_rq to _not_ use kthread if using pure blk-mq dm_mq_queue_rq() is in atomic context so care must be taken to not sleep -- as such GFP_ATOMIC is used for the md->bs bioset allocations and dm-mpath's call to blk_get_request(). In the future the bioset allocations will hopefully go away (by removing support for partial completions of bios in a cloned request). Also prepare for supporting DM blk-mq ontop of old-style request_fn device(s) if a new dm-mod 'use_blk_mq' parameter is set. dm: add full blk-mq support to request-based DM Commit e5863d9ad ("dm: allocate requests in target when stacking on blk-mq devices") served as the first step toward fully utilizing blk-mq in request-based DM -- it enabled stacking an old-style (request_fn) request_queue ontop of the underlying blk-mq device(s). That first step didn't improve performance of DM multipath ontop of fast blk-mq devices (e.g. NVMe) because the top-level old-style request_queue was severely limited by the queue_lock. The second step offered here enables stacking a blk-mq request_queue ontop of the underlying blk-mq device(s). This unlocks significant performance gains on fast blk-mq devices, Keith Busch tested on his NVMe testbed and offered this really positive news: "Just providing a performance update. All my fio tests are getting roughly equal performance whether accessed through the raw block device or the multipath device mapper (~470k IOPS). I could only push ~20% of the raw iops through dm before this conversion, so this latest tree is looking really solid from a performance standpoint." dm: allocate requests in target when stacking on blk-mq devices For blk-mq request-based DM the responsibility of allocating a cloned request is transfered from DM core to the target type. Doing so enables the cloned request to be allocated from the appropriate blk-mq request_queue's pool (only the DM target, e.g. multipath, can know which block device to send a given cloned request to). Care was taken to preserve compatibility with old-style block request completion that requires request-based DM _not_ acquire the clone request's queue lock in the completion path. As such, there are now 2 different request-based DM target_type interfaces: 1) the original .map_rq() interface will continue to be used for non-blk-mq devices -- the preallocated clone request is passed in from DM core. 2) a new .clone_and_map_rq() and .release_clone_rq() will be used for blk-mq devices -- blk_get_request() and blk_put_request() are used respectively from these hooks. dm_table_set_type() was updated to detect if the request-based target is being stacked on blk-mq devices, if so DM_TYPE_MQ_REQUEST_BASED is set. DM core disallows switching the DM table's type after it is set. This means that there is no mixing of non-blk-mq and blk-mq devices within the same request-based DM table. This allows request-based DM to invoke block APIs that assume interrupt enabled context (e.g. blk_get_request) and is a prerequisite for adding blk-mq support to request-based DM. dm mpath: fix IO hang due to logic bug in multipath_busy Commit e80991773 ("dm mpath: push back requests instead of queueing") modified multipath_busy() to return true if !pg_ready(). pg_ready() checks the current state of the multipath device and may return false even if a new IO is needed to change the state. Bart Van Assche reported that he had multipath IO lockup when he was performing cable pull tests. Analysis showed that the multipath device had a single path group with both paths active, but that the path group itself was not active. During the multipath device state transitions 'queue_io' got set but nothing could clear it. Clearing 'queue_io' only happens in __choose_pgpath(), but it won't be called if multipath_busy() returns true due to pg_ready() returning false when 'queue_io' is set. As such the !pg_ready() check in multipath_busy() is wrong because new IO will not be sent to multipath target and the multipath state change won't happen. That results in multipath IO lockup. The intent of multipath_busy() is to avoid unnecessary cycles of dequeue + request_fn + requeue if it is known that the multipath device will requeue. Such "busy" situations would be: - path group is being activated - there is no path and the multipath is setup to requeue if no path Fix multipath_busy() to return "busy" early only for these specific situations. dm: disable WRITE SAME if it fails Add DM core support for disabling WRITE SAME on first failure to both request-based and bio-based targets. The need to disable WRITE SAME stems from SCSI enabling it by default but then disabling it when it fails. When SCSI does this it returns "permanent target failure, do not retry" using -EREMOTEIO. Update DM core to only disable WRITE SAME on failure if the returned error is -EREMOTEIO. Commit f84cb8a4 ("dm mpath: disable WRITE SAME if it fails") implemented multipath specific disabling of WRITE SAME if it fails. However, as that commit detailed, the multipath-only solution doesn't go far enough if bio-based DM targets are stacked ontop of the request-based dm-multipath target (as is commonly done using dm-linear to support partitions on multipath devices, via kpartx). Exception is when !pg_ready() (which means either pg_init is running or requested), then multipath_busy() prevents map_io() being called from request_fn. If pg_init is running, it should be ok as long as pg_init_done() does the right thing when pg_init is completed, I.e.: restart pg_init if !pg_ready() or call dm_table_run_md_queue_async() to kick map_io(). If pg_init is requested, we have to make sure the request is detected and pg_init will be started. pg_init is requested in 3 places: a) __choose_pgpath() in map_io() b) __choose_pgpath() in multipath_ioctl() c) pg_init retry in pg_init_done() a) is ok because map_io() calls __pg_init_all_paths(), which does 2). b) needs a call to __pg_init_all_paths(), which does 2). c) needs a call to __pg_init_all_paths(), which does 2). So this patch removes process_queued_ios() and ensures that __pg_init_all_paths() is called at the appropriate locations. And while we're at it we can simplify the conditional statement in map_io() to make it easier to read. dm mpath: requeue I/O during pg_init When pg_init is running no I/O can be submitted to the underlying devices, as the path priority etc might change. When using queue_io for this, requests will be piling up within multipath as the block I/O scheduler just sees a _very fast_ device. All of this queued I/O has to be resubmitted from within multipathing once pg_init is done. This approach has the problem that it's virtually impossible to abort I/O when pg_init is running, and we're adding heavy load to the devices after pg_init since all of the queued I/O needs to be resubmitted _before_ any requests can be pulled off of the request queue and normal operation continues. This patch will requeue the I/O that triggers the pg_init call, and return 'busy' when pg_init is in progress. With these changes the block I/O scheduler will stop submitting I/O during pg_init, resulting in a quicker path switch and less I/O pressure (and memory consumption) after pg_init. dm mpath: fix race condition between multipath_dtr and pg_init_done Whenever multipath_dtr() is happening we must prevent queueing any further path activation work. Implement this by adding a new 'pg_init_disabled' flag to the multipath structure that denotes future path activation work should be skipped if it is set. By disabling pg_init and then re-enabling in flush_multipath_work() we also avoid the potential for pg_init to be initiated while suspending an mpath device. dm mpath: disable WRITE SAME if it fails Workaround the SCSI layer's problematic WRITE SAME heuristics by disabling WRITE SAME in the DM multipath device's queue_limits if an underlying device disabled it. The WRITE SAME heuristics, with both the original commit 5db44863b6eb ("[SCSI] sd: Implement support for WRITE SAME") and the updated commit 66c28f971 ("[SCSI] sd: Update WRITE SAME heuristics"), default to enabling WRITE SAME(10) even without successfully determining it is supported. After the first failed WRITE SAME the SCSI layer will disable WRITE SAME for the device (by setting sdkp->device->no_write_same which results in 'max_write_same_sectors' in device's queue_limits to be set to 0). When a device is stacked ontop of such a SCSI device any changes to that SCSI device's queue_limits do not automatically propagate up the stack. As such, a DM multipath device will not have its WRITE SAME support disabled. This causes the block layer to continue to issue WRITE SAME requests to the mpath device which causes paths to fail and (if mpath IO isn't configured to queue when no paths are available) it will result in actual IO errors to the upper layers. This fix doesn't help configurations that have additional devices stacked ontop of the mpath device (e.g. LVM created linear DM devices ontop). A proper fix that restacks all the queue_limits from the bottom of the device stack up will need to be explored if SCSI will continue to use this model of optimistically allowing op codes and then disabling them after they fail for the first time. Otherwise a deadlock occurs when all paths are down: - dm_blk_ioctl takes a reference to the current table and spins in multipath_ioctl(). - A new table is being loaded, but upon resume the process hangs in dm_table_destroy() waiting for references to drop to zero. With this patch the reference to the old table is dropped prior to retry, thereby avoiding the deadlock. dm: fix truncated status strings Avoid returning a truncated table or status string instead of setting the DM_BUFFER_FULL_FLAG when the last target of a table fills the buffer. When processing a table or status request, the function retrieve_status calls ti->type->status. If ti->type->status returns non-zero, retrieve_status assumes that the buffer overflowed and sets DM_BUFFER_FULL_FLAG. However, targets don't return non-zero values from their status method on overflow. Most targets returns always zero. If a buffer overflow happens in a target that is not the last in the table, it gets noticed during the next iteration of the loop in retrieve_status; but if a buffer overflow happens in the last target, it goes unnoticed and erroneously truncated data is returned. In the current code, the targets behave in the following way: * dm-crypt returns -ENOMEM if there is not enough space to store the key, but it returns 0 on all other overflows. * dm-thin returns errors from the status method if a disk error happened. This is incorrect because retrieve_status doesn't check the error code, it assumes that all non-zero values mean buffer overflow. * all the other targets always return 0. This patch changes the ti->type->status function to return void (because most targets don't use the return code). Overflow is detected in retrieve_status: if the status method fills up the remaining space completely, it is assumed that buffer overflow happened. dm mpath: add retain_attached_hw_handler feature A SCSI device handler might get attached to a device during the initial device scan. We do not necessarily want to override this when loading a multipath table, so this patch adds a new multipath feature argument "retain_attached_hw_handler". During SCSI device scan all loaded SCSI device handlers will be consulted for a match (via scsi_dh's provided .match). If a match is found that device handler will be attached. We need a way to have userspace multipathd's provided 'hw_handler' not override the already attached hardware handler. When specifying the new feature 'retain_attached_hw_handler' multipath will use the currently attached hardware handler instead of trying to attach the one specified during table load. If no hardware handler is attached the specified hardware handler will still be used. Leverages scsi_dh_attach's ability to increment the scsi_dh's reference count if the same scsi_dh name is provided when attaching - currently attached scsi_dh name is determined with scsi_dh_attached_handler_name. dm mpath: allow ioctls to trigger pg init After the failure of a group of paths, any alternative paths that need initialising do not become available until further I/O is sent to the device. Until this has happened, ioctls return -EAGAIN. With this patch, new paths are made available in response to an ioctl too. The processing of the ioctl gets delayed until this has happened. Instead of returning an error, we submit a work item to kmultipathd (that will potentially activate the new path) and retry in ten milliseconds. Note that the patch doesn't retry an ioctl if the ioctl itself fails due to a path failure. Such retries should be handled intelligently by the code that generated the ioctl in the first place, noting that some SCSI commands should not be retried because they are not idempotent (XOR write commands). For commands that could be retried, there is a danger that if the device rejected the SCSI command, the path could be errorneously marked as failed, and the request would be retried on another path which might fail too. It can be determined if the failure happens on the device or on the SCSI controller, but there is no guarantee that all SCSI drivers set these flags correctly. dm: reject trailing characters in sccanf input Device mapper uses sscanf to convert arguments to numbers. The problem is that the way we use it ignores additional unmatched characters in the scanned string. For example, this `if (sscanf(string, "%d", &number) == 1)' will match a number, but also it will match number with some garbage appended, like "123abc". As a result, device mapper accepts garbage after some numbers. For example the command `dmsetup create vg1-new --table "0 16384 linear 254:1bla 34816bla"' will pass without an error. This patch fixes all sscanf uses in device mapper. It appends "%c" with a pointer to a dummy character variable to every sscanf statement. The construct `if (sscanf(string, "%d%c", &number, &dummy) == 1)' succeeds only if string is a null-terminated number (optionally preceded by some whitespace characters). If there is some character appended after the number, sscanf matches "%c", writes the character to the dummy variable and returns 2. We check the return value for 1 and consequently reject numbers with some garbage appended. dm mpath: allow table load with no priority groups This patch adjusts the multipath target to allow a table with both 0 priority groups and 0 for the initial priority group number. If any mpath device is held open when all paths in the last priority group have failed, userspace multipathd will attempt to reload the associated DM table to reflect the fact that the device no longer has any priority groups. But the reload attempt always failed because the multipath target did not allow 0 priority groups. All multipath target messages related to priority group (enable_group, disable_group, switch_group) will handle a priority group of 0 (will cause error). When reloading a multipath table with 0 priority groups, userspace multipathd must be updated to specify an initial priority group number of 0 (rather than 1). [SCSI] dm mpath: propagate target errors immediately DM now has more information about the nature of the underlying storage failure. Path failure is avoided if a request failed due to a target error. Instead the target error is immediately passed up the stack. Discard requests that fail due to non-target errors may now be retried. dm mpath: delay activate_path retry on SCSI_DH_RETRY This patch adds a user-configurable 'pg_init_delay_msecs' feature. Use this feature to specify the number of milliseconds to delay before retrying scsi_dh_activate, when SCSI_DH_RETRY is returned. SCSI Device Handlers return SCSI_DH_IMM_RETRY if we could retry activation immediately and SCSI_DH_RETRY in cases where it is better to retry after some delay. Currently we immediately retry scsi_dh_activate irrespective of SCSI_DH_IMM_RETRY and SCSI_DH_RETRY. The 'pg_init_delay_msecs' feature may be provided during table create or load, e.g.: dmsetup create --table "0 20971520 multipath 3 queue_if_no_path \ pg_init_delay_msecs 2500 ..." mpatha The default for 'pg_init_delay_msecs' is 2000 milliseconds. Maximum configurable delay is 60000 milliseconds. Specifying a 'pg_init_delay_msecs' of 0 will cause immediate retry. dm mpath: support discard Enable discard support in the DM multipath target. This discard support depends on a few discard-specific fixes to the block layer's request stacking driver methods. Discard requests are optional so don't allow a failed discard to trigger path failures. If there is a real problem with a given path the barriers associated with the discard (either before or after the discard) will cause path failure. That said, unconditionally passing discard failures up the stack is not ideal. This must be fixed once DM has more information about the nature of the underlying storage failure. dm mpath: hold io until all pg_inits completed m->queue_io is set to block processing I/Os, and it needs to be kept while pg-init, which issues multiple path activations, is in progress. But m->queue is cleared when a path activation completes without error in pg_init_done(), even while other path activations are in progress. That may cause undesired -EIO on paths which are not complete activation. This patch fixes that by not clearing m->queue_io until all path activations complete. dm mpath: change to be request based This patch converts dm-multipath target to request-based from bio-based. Basically, the patch just converts the I/O unit from struct bio to struct request. In the course of the conversion, it also changes the I/O queueing mechanism. The change in the I/O queueing is described in details as follows. I/O queueing mechanism change ----------------------------- In I/O submission, map_io(), there is no mechanism change from bio-based, since the clone request is ready for retry as it is. However, in I/O complition, do_end_io(), there is a mechanism change from bio-based, since the clone request is not ready for retry. In do_end_io() of bio-based, the clone bio has all needed memory for resubmission. So the target driver can queue it and resubmit it later without memory allocations. The mechanism has almost no overhead. On the other hand, in do_end_io() of request-based, the clone request doesn't have clone bios, so the target driver can't resubmit it as it is. To resubmit the clone request, memory allocation for clone bios is needed, and it takes some overheads. To avoid the overheads just for queueing, the target driver doesn't queue the clone request inside itself. Instead, the target driver asks dm core for queueing and remapping the original request of the clone request, since the overhead for queueing is just a freeing memory for the clone request. As a result, the target driver doesn't need to record/restore the information of the original request for resubmitting the clone request. So dm_bio_details in dm_mpath_io is removed. multipath_busy() --------------------- The target driver returns "busy", only when the following case: o The target driver will map I/Os, if map() function is called and o The mapped I/Os will wait on underlying device's queue due to their congestions, if map() function is called now. In other cases, the target driver doesn't return "busy". Otherwise, dm core will keep the I/Os and the target driver can't do what it wants. (e.g. the target driver can't map I/Os now, so wants to kill I/Os.) Path selectors can use it to start accounting of the I/O. (e.g. counting the number of in-flight I/Os.) There is a possibility of race condition because kevent queue is not flushed in the multipath destructor. The scenario is: - some event happens and is queued to keventd - keventd thread is delayed due to scheuling latency or some other work - multipath device is destroyed - keventd now attempts to process work_struct that is residing in already released memory. The patch flushes the keventd queue in multipath constructor. I've already fixed similar bug in dm-raid1. dm mpath: call activate fn for each path in pg_init Fixed a problem affecting reinstatement of passive paths. Before we moved the hardware handler from dm to SCSI, it performed a pg_init for a path group and didn't maintain any state about each path in hardware handler code. But in SCSI dh, such state is now maintained, as we want to fail I/O early on a path if it is not the active path. All the hardware handlers have a state now and set to active or some form of inactive. They have prep_fn() which uses this state to fail the I/O without it ever being sent to the device. So in effect when dm-multipath calls scsi_dh_activate(), activate is sent to only one path and the "state" of that path is changed appropriately to "active" while other paths in the same path group are never changed as they never got an "activate". In order make sure all the paths in a path group gets their state set properly when a pg_init happens, we need to call scsi_dh_activate() on all paths in a path group. Doing this at the hardware handler layer is not a good option as we want the multipath layer to define the relationship between path and path groups and not the hardware handler. Attached patch sends an "activate" on each path in a path group when a path group is switched. It also sends an activate when a path is reinstated. The problem here is the hardware table from scsi_dh is compiled in and cannot be changed from userland. The multipath.conf OTOH is purely user-defined and, what's more, the user might have a valid reason for modifying it. (EG EMC Clariion can well be run in PNR mode even though ALUA is active, or the user might want to try ALUA on any as-of-yet unknown devices) So _not_ allowing multipath to override the device handler setting will just add to the confusion and makes error tracking even more difficult. It can't fail because of user's behavior or disk errors. This patch removes code duplication (testing of error codes in all dm targets) and reports bugs in just one place, in dm_unregister_target. [SCSI] block: separate failfast into multiple bits. Multipath is best at handling transport errors. If it gets a device error then there is not much the multipath layer can do. It will just access the same device but from a different path. This patch breaks up failfast into device, transport and driver errors. The multipath layers (md and dm mutlipath) only ask the lower levels to fast fail transport errors. The user of failfast, read ahead, will ask to fast fail on all errors. Note that blk_noretry_request will return true if any failfast bit is set. This allows drivers that do not support the multipath failfast bits to continue to fail on any failfast error like before. Drivers like scsi that are able to fail fast specific errors can check for the specific fail fast type. In the next patch I will convert scsi. It is due to the fact that the current_pgpath (in the multipath data structure) can be modified if changes happen in any of the paths leading to the lun. [SCSI] scsi_dh: Add a single threaded workqueue for initializing paths Before this patch set (SCSI hardware handlers), initialization of a path was done asynchronously. Doing that requires a workqueue in each device/hardware handler module and leads to unneccessary complication in the device handler code, making it difficult to read the code and follow the state diagram. Moving that workqueue to this level makes the device handler code simpler. Hence, the workqueue is moved to dm level. A new workqueue is added instead of adding it to the existing workqueue (kmpathd) for the following reasons: 1. Device activation has to happen faster, stacking them along with the other workqueue might lead to unnecessary delay in the activation of the path. 2. The effect could be felt the other way too. i.e the current events that are handled by the existing workqueue might get a delayed response. [SCSI] scsi_dh: Use SCSI device handler in dm-multipath This patch converts dm-mpath to use scsi device handlers instead of dm's hardware handlers. This patch does not add any new functionality. Old behaviors remain and userspace tools work as is except that arguments supplied with hardware handler are ignored. One behavioral exception is: Activation of a path is synchronous in this patch, opposed to the older behavior of being asynchronous (changed in patch 07: scsi_dh: Add a single threaded workqueue for initializing a path) Note: There is no need to get a reference for the device handler module (as it was done in the dm hardware handler case) here as the reference is held when the device was first found. Instead we check and make sure that support for the specified device is present at table load time. dm mpath: add retry pg init This patch allows a failed path group initialisation command to be retried. It adds a generic MP_RETRY flag and a "pg_init_retries" feature to device-mapper multipath which limits the number of retries. 1. A hw handler sends a path initialization command to the storage and the command completes with an error code indicating the command should be retried. 2. The hardware handler calls dm_pg_init_complete() with MP_RETRY set in err_flags to ask the dm multipath core to retry. 3. If the retry limit has not been exceeded, pg_init() is retried. Otherwise fail_path() is called. If you are using the userspace multipath-tools or device-mapper-multipath package, you can set pg_init_retries in the 'device' section of your /etc/multipath.conf file. For example: features "2 pg_init_retries 7" The number of PG retries attempted is reported in the 'dmsetup status' output. The pushback request is used when: 1) there are no valid paths; 2) queue_if_no_path was set; 3) a suspend is being issued with the DMF_NOFLUSH_SUSPENDING flag. Otherwise bios are returned to applications with -EIO. To check whether queue_if_no_path is specified or not, you need to check both queue_if_no_path and saved_queue_if_no_path, because presuspend saves the original queue_if_no_path value to saved_queue_if_no_path. [PATCH] dm: support ioctls on mapped devices: fix with fake file The new ioctl code passes the wrong file pointer to the underlying device. No file pointer is available so make a temporary fake one. ioctl_by_bdev() does set_fs(KERNEL_DS) so it's for ioctls originating within the kernel and unsuitable here. We are processing ioctls that originated in userspace and mapping them to different devices. Fixing the existing callers that pass a NULL file struct and consolidating the fake_file users are separate matters to solve in later patches. [PATCH] device-mapper: Fix queue_if_no_path initialisation When creating a multipath device, if the queue_if_no_path parameter is specified it gets ignored. While the queue_if_no_path variable is correctly set to 1, the saved_queue_if_no_path gets set to 0. When the device is subsequently made live (resumed), the saved value (0) always overwrites the live value (1) so the option *always* gets turned off. The fix adds a parameter to the queue_if_no_path() function to indicate whether the previous value should be preserved or not - if not, as when the device is being set up, the saved value is set to the new value (1). [PATCH] device-mapper multipath: Fix pg initialisation races Prevent more than one priority group initialisation function from being outstanding at once. Otherwise the completion functions interfere with each other. Also, reloading the table could reference a freed pointer. Only reset queue_io in pg_init_complete if another pg_init isn't required. Skip process_queued_ios if the queue is empty so that we only trigger a pg_init if there's I/O. [PATCH] device-mapper multipath: Avoid possible suspension deadlock To avoid deadlock when suspending a multipath device after all its paths have failed, stop queueing any I/O that is about to fail *before* calling freeze_bdev instead of after. Instead of setting a multipath 'suspended' flag which would have to be reset if an error occurs during the process, save the previous queueing state and leave userspace to restore if it wishes. Linux-2.6.12-rc2 Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
