drm/i915: Wrap all access to i915_vma.node.start|size We already wrap i915_vma.node.start for use with the GGTT, as there we can perform additional sanity checks that the node belongs to the GGTT and fits within the 32b registers. In the next couple of patches, we will introduce guard pages around the objects _inside_ the drm_mm_node allocation. That is we will offset the vma->pages so that the first page is at drm_mm_node.start + vma->guard (not 0 as is currently the case). All users must then not use i915_vma.node.start directly, but compute the guard offset, thus all users are converted to use a i915_vma_offset() wrapper. The notable exceptions are the selftests that are testing exact behaviour of i915_vma_pin/i915_vma_insert. drm/i915/selftests: Stop using kthread_stop() Since a7c01fa93aeb ("signal: break out of wait loops on kthread_stop()") kthread_stop() started asserting a pending signal which wreaks havoc with a few of our selftests. Mainly because they are not fully expecting to handle signals, but also cutting the intended test runtimes short due signal_pending() now returning true (via __igt_timeout), which therefore breaks both the patterns of: kthread_run() ..sleep for igt_timeout_ms to allow test to exercise stuff.. kthread_stop() And check for errors recorded in the thread. And also: Main thread | Test thread ---------------+------------------------------ kthread_run() | kthread_stop() | do stuff until __igt_timeout | -- exits early due signal -- Where this kthread_stop() was assume would have a "join" semantics, which it would have had if not the new signal assertion issue. To recap, threads are now likely to catch a previously impossible ERESTARTSYS or EINTR, marking the test as failed, or have a pointlessly short run time. To work around this start using kthread_work(er) API which provides an explicit way of waiting for threads to exit. And for cases where parent controls the test duration we add explicit signaling which threads will now use instead of relying on kthread_should_stop(). drm/i915/selftests: Use clear_and_wake_up_bit() for the per-engine reset bitlocks Some selftests assume that nothing will attempt to grab these bitlocks while they are held by the selftests. With GuC, for example, that is not true because the hanging workloads may cause the GuC code to attempt to grab them for a global reset, and that may cause it to end up sleeping on the bit never waking up. Regardless whether that will be the final solution for GuC, use clear_and_wake_up_bit() pending a more thorough investigation on how this should be handled moving forward. To be clear this needs to be a temporary solution. If we can't find an in-kernel locking primitive to use here, we should at the very least add lockdep annotation to these bitlocks with a thorough explanation as to why we need to use bits. v3: - Use GEM_BUG_ON(test_and_set_bit()) rather than set_bit() to verify the assumption that nothing is holding the reset locks when we attempt to grab them. Restore objects without this flag with the gpu blitter and only objects carrying the flag using TTM memcpy. Initially mark the migrate, gt, gtt and vgpu vms to use this flag, and defer for a later audit which vms actually need it. Most importantly, user- allocated vms with pinned page-table objects can be restored using the blitter. Performance-wise memcpy restore is probably as fast as gpu restore if not faster, but using gpu restore will help tackling future restrictions in mappable LMEM size. v4: - Don't mark the aliasing ppgtt page table flags for early resume, but rather the ggtt page table flags as intended. drm/i915/selftest: Bump selftest timeouts for hangcheck Some testing environments and some heavier tests are slower than previous limits allowed for. For example, it can take multiple seconds for the 'context has been reset' notification handler to reach the 'kill the requests' code in the 'active' version of the 'reset engines' test. During which time the selftest gets bored, gives up waiting and fails the test. There is also an async thread that the selftest uses to pump work through the hardware in parallel to the context that is marked for reset. That also could get bored waiting for completions and kill the test off. Lastly, the flush at the of various test sections can also see timeouts due to the large amount of work backed up. This is also true of the live_hwsp_read test. drm/i915/selftest: Fix hangcheck self test for GuC submission When GuC submission is enabled, the GuC controls engine resets. Rather than explicitly triggering a reset, the driver must submit a hanging context to GuC and wait for the reset to occur. Conversely, one of the tests specifically sends hanging batches to the engines but wants them to sit around until a manual reset of the full GT (including GuC itself). That means disabling GuC based engine resets to prevent those from killing the hanging batch too soon. So, add support to the scheduling policy helper for disabling resets as well as making them quicker! In GuC submission mode, the 'is engine idle' test basically turns into 'is engine PM wakelock held'. Independently, there is a heartbeat disable helper function that the tests use. For unexplained reasons, this acquires the engine wakelock before disabling the heartbeat and only releases it when re-enabling the heartbeat. As one of the tests tries to do a wait for idle in the middle of a heartbeat disabled section, it is therefore guaranteed to always fail. Added a 'no_pm' variant of the heartbeat helper that allows the engine to be asleep while also having heartbeats disabled. drm/i915/gt: Replace direct submit with direct call to tasklet Rather than having special case code for opportunistically calling process_csb() and performing a direct submit while holding the engine spinlock for submitting the request, simply call the tasklet directly. This allows us to retain the direct submission path, including the CS draining to allow fast/immediate submissions, without requiring any duplicated code paths, and most importantly greatly simplifying the control flow by removing reentrancy. This will enable us to close a few races in the virtual engines in the next few patches. The trickiest part here is to ensure that paired operations (such as schedule_in/schedule_out) remain under consistent locking domains, e.g. when pulled outside of the engine->active.lock v2: Use bh kicking, see commit 3c53776e29f8 ("Mark HI and TASKLET softirq synchronous"). v3: Update engine-reset to be tasklet aware Signed-off-by: Chris Wilson <chris@chris-wilson.co.uk> Reviewed-by: Mika Kuoppala <mika.kuoppala@linux.intel.com> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20201224135544.1713-1-chris@chris-wilson.co.uk

Note that the vm->mutex is tainted by the shrinker (we require unbinding from inside fs-reclaim) and so we cannot allocate while holding that mutex. Instead we have to preallocate workers to do allocate and apply the PTE updates after we have we reserved their slot in the drm_mm (using fences to order the PTE writes with the GPU work and with later unbind). In adding the asynchronous vma binding, one subtle requirement is to avoid coupling the binding fence into the backing object->resv. That is the asynchronous binding only applies to the vma timeline itself and not to the pages as that is a more global timeline (the binding of one vma does not need to be ordered with another vma, nor does the implicit GEM fencing depend on a vma, only on writes to the backing store). Keeping the vma binding distinct from the backing store timelines is verified by a number of async gem_exec_fence and gem_exec_schedule tests. The way we do this is quite simple, we keep the fence for the vma binding separate and only wait on it as required, and never add it to the obj->resv itself. Another consequence in reducing the locking around the vma is the destruction of the vma is no longer globally serialised by struct_mutex. A natural solution would be to add a kref to i915_vma, but that requires decoupling the reference cycles, possibly by introducing a new i915_mm_pages object that is own by both obj->mm and vma->pages. However, we have not taken that route due to the overshadowing lmem/ttm discussions, and instead play a series of complicated games with trylocks to (hopefully) ensure that only one destruction path is called! v2: Add some commentary, and some helpers to reduce patch churn. drm/i915: Throw away the active object retirement complexity Remove the accumulated optimisations that we have for i915_vma_retire and reduce it to the bare essential of tracking the active object reference. This allows us to only use atomic operations, and so will be able to avoid the struct_mutex requirement. The principal loss here is the shrinker MRU bumping, so now if we have to shrink, we will do so in much more random order and more likely to try and shrink recently used objects. That is a nuisance, but shrinking active objects is a second step we try to avoid and will always be a system-wide performance issue. The other loss is here is in the automatic pruning of the reservation_object when idling. This is not as large an issue as upon reservation_object introduction as now adding new fences into the object replaces already signaled fences, keeping the array compact. But we do lose the auto-expiration of stale fences and unused arrays. That may be a noticeable problem for which we need to re-implement autopruning. drm/i915: Invert the GEM wakeref hierarchy In the current scheme, on submitting a request we take a single global GEM wakeref, which trickles down to wake up all GT power domains. This is undesirable as we would like to be able to localise our power management to the available power domains and to remove the global GEM operations from the heart of the driver. (The intent there is to push global GEM decisions to the boundary as used by the GEM user interface.) Now during request construction, each request is responsible via its logical context to acquire a wakeref on each power domain it intends to utilize. Currently, each request takes a wakeref on the engine(s) and the engines themselves take a chipset wakeref. This gives us a transition on each engine which we can extend if we want to insert more powermangement control (such as soft rc6). The global GEM operations that currently require a struct_mutex are reduced to listening to pm events from the chipset GT wakeref. As we reduce the struct_mutex requirement, these listeners should evaporate. Perhaps the biggest immediate change is that this removes the struct_mutex requirement around GT power management, allowing us greater flexibility in request construction. Another important knock-on effect, is that by tracking engine usage, we can insert a switch back to the kernel context on that engine immediately, avoiding any extra delay or inserting global synchronisation barriers. This makes tracking when an engine and its associated contexts are idle much easier -- important for when we forgo our assumed execution ordering and need idle barriers to unpin used contexts. In the process, it means we remove a large chunk of code whose only purpose was to switch back to the kernel context.
