x86/kvm: Use separate percpu variable to track the enabling of asyncpf Refer to commit fd10cde9294f ("KVM paravirt: Add async PF initialization to PV guest") and commit 344d9588a9df ("KVM: Add PV MSR to enable asynchronous page faults delivery"). It turns out that at the time when asyncpf was introduced, the purpose was defining the shared PV data 'struct kvm_vcpu_pv_apf_data' with the size of 64 bytes. However, it made a mistake and defined the size to 68 bytes, which failed to make fit in a cache line and made the code inconsistent with the documentation. Below justification quoted from Sean[*] KVM (the host side) has *never* read kvm_vcpu_pv_apf_data.enabled, and the documentation clearly states that enabling is based solely on the bit in the synthetic MSR. So rather than update the documentation, fix the goof by removing the enabled filed and use the separate percpu variable instread. KVM-as-a-host obviously doesn't enforce anything or consume the size, and changing the header will only affect guests that are rebuilt against the new header, so there's no chance of ABI breakage between KVM and its guests. The only possible breakage is if some other hypervisor is emulating KVM's async #PF (LOL) and relies on the guest to set kvm_vcpu_pv_apf_data.enabled. But (a) I highly doubt such a hypervisor exists, (b) that would arguably be a violation of KVM's "spec", and (c) the worst case scenario is that the guest would simply lose async #PF functionality. KVM: x86: Make sure KVM_CPUID_FEATURES really are KVM_CPUID_FEATURES Currently when kvm_update_cpuid_runtime() runs, it assumes that the KVM_CPUID_FEATURES leaf is located at 0x40000001. This is not true, however, if Hyper-V support is enabled. In this case the KVM leaves will be offset. This patch introdues as new 'kvm_cpuid_base' field into struct kvm_vcpu_arch to track the location of the KVM leaves and function kvm_update_kvm_cpuid_base() (called from kvm_set_cpuid()) to locate the leaves using the 'KVMKVMKVM\0\0\0' signature (which is now given a definition in kvm_para.h). Introduce paravirtual versions of flush_tlb_multi() for KVM, Xen and hyper-v (Xen and hyper-v are only compile-tested). While the updated smp infrastructure is capable of running a function on a single local core, it is not optimized for this case. The multiple function calls and the indirect branch introduce some overhead, and might make local TLB flushes slower than they were before the recent changes. Before calling the SMP infrastructure, check if only a local TLB flush is needed to restore the lost performance in this common case. This requires to check mm_cpumask() one more time, but unless this mask is updated very frequently, this should impact performance negatively. Revert "KVM: Check the allocation of pv cpu mask" The commit 0f990222108d ("KVM: Check the allocation of pv cpu mask") we have in 5.9-rc5 has two issue: 1) Compilation fails for !CONFIG_SMP, see: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=209285 2) This commit completely disables PV TLB flush, see https://lore.kernel.org/kvm/87y2lrnnyf.fsf@vitty.brq.redhat.com/ The allocation problem is likely a theoretical one, if we don't have memory that early in boot process we're likely doomed anyway. x86/kvm: don't forget to ACK async PF IRQ Merge commit 26d05b368a5c0 ("Merge branch 'kvm-async-pf-int' into HEAD") tried to adapt the new interrupt based async PF mechanism to the newly introduced IDTENTRY magic but unfortunately it missed the fact that DEFINE_IDTENTRY_SYSVEC() doesn't call ack_APIC_irq() on its own and all DEFINE_IDTENTRY_SYSVEC() users have to call it manually. As the result all multi-CPU KVM guest hang on boot when KVM_FEATURE_ASYNC_PF_INT is present. The breakage went unnoticed because no KVM userspace (e.g. QEMU) currently set it (and thus async PF mechanism is currently disabled) but we're about to change that. This doesn't change the semantics as we only have reasons '1' and '2' and these can be treated as bit flags but KVM_PV_REASON_PAGE_READY is going away with interrupt based delivery making 'reason' name misleading. The newly introduced apf_put_user_ready() temporary puts both flags and token information, this will be changed to put token only when we switch to interrupt based notifications. x86/kvm: Restrict ASYNC_PF to user space The async page fault injection into kernel space creates more problems than it solves. The host has absolutely no knowledge about the state of the guest if the fault happens in CPL0. The only restriction for the host is interrupt disabled state. If interrupts are enabled in the guest then the exception can hit arbitrary code. The HALT based wait in non-preemotible code is a hacky replacement for a proper hypercall. For the ongoing work to restrict instrumentation and make the RCU idle interaction well defined the required extra work for supporting async pagefault in CPL0 is just not justified and creates complexity for a dubious benefit. The CPL3 injection is well defined and does not cause any issues as it is more or less the same as a regular page fault from CPL3. x86/kvm: Sanitize kvm_async_pf_task_wait() While working on the entry consolidation I stumbled over the KVM async page fault handler and kvm_async_pf_task_wait() in particular. It took me a while to realize that the randomly sprinkled around rcu_irq_enter()/exit() invocations are just cargo cult programming. Several patches "fixed" RCU splats by curing the symptoms without noticing that the code is flawed from a design perspective. The main problem is that this async injection is not based on a proper handshake mechanism and only respects the minimal requirement, i.e. the guest is not in a state where it has interrupts disabled. Aside of that the actual code is a convoluted one fits it all swiss army knife. It is invoked from different places with different RCU constraints: 1) Host side: vcpu_enter_guest() kvm_x86_ops->handle_exit() kvm_handle_page_fault() kvm_async_pf_task_wait() The invocation happens from fully preemptible context. 2) Guest side: The async page fault interrupted: a) user space b) preemptible kernel code which is not in a RCU read side critical section c) non-preemtible kernel code or a RCU read side critical section or kernel code with CONFIG_PREEMPTION=n which allows not to differentiate between #2b and #2c. RCU is watching for: #1 The vCPU exited and current is definitely not the idle task #2a The #PF entry code on the guest went through enter_from_user_mode() which reactivates RCU #2b There is no preemptible, interrupts enabled code in the kernel which can run with RCU looking away. (The idle task is always non preemptible). I.e. all schedulable states (#1, #2a, #2b) do not need any of this RCU voodoo at all. In #2c RCU is eventually not watching, but as that state cannot schedule anyway there is no point to worry about it so it has to invoke rcu_irq_enter() before running that code. This can be optimized, but this will be done as an extra step in course of the entry code consolidation work. So the proper solution for this is to: - Split kvm_async_pf_task_wait() into schedule and halt based waiting interfaces which share the enqueueing code. - Add comments (condensed form of this changelog) to spare others the time waste and pain of reverse engineering all of this with the help of uncomprehensible changelogs and code history. - Invoke kvm_async_pf_task_wait_schedule() from kvm_handle_page_fault(), user mode and schedulable kernel side async page faults (#1, #2a, #2b) - Invoke kvm_async_pf_task_wait_halt() for the non schedulable kernel case (#2c). For this case also remove the rcu_irq_exit()/enter() pair around the halt as it is just a pointless exercise: - vCPUs can VMEXIT at any random point and can be scheduled out for an arbitrary amount of time by the host and this is not any different except that it voluntary triggers the exit via halt. - The interrupted context could have RCU watching already. So the rcu_irq_exit() before the halt is not gaining anything aside of confusing the reader. Claiming that this might prevent RCU stalls is just an illusion. x86/kvm: Handle async page faults directly through do_page_fault() KVM overloads #PF to indicate two types of not-actually-page-fault events. Right now, the KVM guest code intercepts them by modifying the IDT and hooking the #PF vector. This makes the already fragile fault code even harder to understand, and it also pollutes call traces with async_page_fault and do_async_page_fault for normal page faults. Clean it up by moving the logic into do_page_fault() using a static branch. This gets rid of the platform trap_init override mechanism completely. x86/kvmclock: Remove memblock dependency KVM clock is initialized later compared to other hypervisor clocks because it has a dependency on the memblock allocator. Bring it in line with other hypervisors by using memory from the BSS instead of allocating it. kvm: rename KVM_HINTS_DEDICATED to KVM_HINTS_REALTIME KVM_HINTS_DEDICATED seems to be somewhat confusing: Guest doesn't really care whether it's the only task running on a host CPU as long as it's not preempted. And there are more reasons for Guest to be preempted than host CPU sharing, for example, with memory overcommit it can get preempted on a memory access, post copy migration can cause preemption, etc. Let's call it KVM_HINTS_REALTIME which seems to better match what guests expect. Also, the flag most be set on all vCPUs - current guests assume this. Note so in the documentation. Signed-off-by: Michael S. KVM: Introduce paravirtualization hints and KVM_HINTS_DEDICATED This patch introduces kvm_para_has_hint() to query for hints about the configuration of the guests. KVM: X86: use paravirtualized TLB Shootdown Remote TLB flush does a busy wait which is fine in bare-metal scenario. But with-in the guest, the vcpus might have been pre-empted or blocked. In this scenario, the initator vcpu would end up busy-waiting for a long amount of time; it also consumes CPU unnecessarily to wake up the target of the shootdown. This patch set adds support for KVM's new paravirtualized TLB flush; remote TLB flush does not wait for vcpus that are sleeping, instead KVM will flush the TLB as soon as the vCPU starts running again. The improvement is clearly visible when the host is overcommitted; in this case, the PV TLB flush (in addition to avoiding the wait on the main CPU) prevents preempted vCPUs from stealing precious execution time from the running ones. Testing on a Xeon Gold 6142 2.6GHz 2 sockets, 32 cores, 64 threads, so 64 pCPUs, and each VM is 64 vCPUs. ebizzy -M vanilla optimized boost 1VM 46799 48670 4% 2VM 23962 42691 78% 3VM 16152 37539 132% Cc: Paolo Bonzini <pbonzini@redhat.com> Cc: Radim Krčmář <rkrcmar@redhat.com> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Signed-off-by: Wanpeng Li <wanpeng.li@hotmail.com> Signed-off-by: Paolo Bonzini <pbonzini@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Radim Krčmář <rkrcmar@redhat.com>

kvm/x86: Avoid async PF preempting the kernel incorrectly Currently, in PREEMPT_COUNT=n kernel, kvm_async_pf_task_wait() could call schedule() to reschedule in some cases. This could result in accidentally ending the current RCU read-side critical section early, causing random memory corruption in the guest, or otherwise preempting the currently running task inside between preempt_disable and preempt_enable. The difficulty to handle this well is because we don't know whether an async PF delivered in a preemptible section or RCU read-side critical section for PREEMPT_COUNT=n, since preempt_disable()/enable() and rcu_read_lock/unlock() are both no-ops in that case. To cure this, we treat any async PF interrupting a kernel context as one that cannot be preempted, preventing kvm_async_pf_task_wait() from choosing the schedule() path in that case. To do so, a second parameter for kvm_async_pf_task_wait() is introduced, so that we know whether it's called from a context interrupting the kernel, and the parameter is set properly in all the callsites. Commit 9b132fbe5419 (Add rcu user eqs exception hooks for async page fault) adds rcu_irq_enter/exit() to kvm_async_pf_task_wait() to exit cpu idle eqs when needed, to protect the code that needs use rcu. However, we need to call the pair even if the function calls schedule(), as seen from the above backtrace. This patch fixes it by informing the RCU subsystem exit/enter the irq towards/away from idle for both n.halted and !n.halted. KVM: async_pf: Let guest support delivery of async_pf from guest mode Adds another flag bit (bit 2) to MSR_KVM_ASYNC_PF_EN. If bit 2 is 1, async page faults are delivered to L1 as #PF vmexits; if bit 2 is 0, kvm_can_do_async_pf returns 0 if in guest mode. This is similar to what svm.c wanted to do all along, but it is only enabled for Linux as L1 hypervisor. Foreign hypervisors must never receive async page faults as vmexits, because they'd probably be very confused about that. x86/kvm: Provide optimized version of vcpu_is_preempted() for x86-64 It was found when running fio sequential write test with a XFS ramdisk on a KVM guest running on a 2-socket x86-64 system, the %CPU times as reported by perf were as follows: 69.75% 0.59% fio [k] down_write 69.15% 0.01% fio [k] call_rwsem_down_write_failed 67.12% 1.12% fio [k] rwsem_down_write_failed 63.48% 52.77% fio [k] osq_lock 9.46% 7.88% fio [k] __raw_callee_save___kvm_vcpu_is_preempt 3.93% 3.93% fio [k] __kvm_vcpu_is_preempted Making vcpu_is_preempted() a callee-save function has a relatively high cost on x86-64 primarily due to at least one more cacheline of data access from the saving and restoring of registers (8 of them) to and from stack as well as one more level of function call. To reduce this performance overhead, an optimized assembly version of the the __raw_callee_save___kvm_vcpu_is_preempt() function is provided for x86-64. With this patch applied on a KVM guest on a 2-socket 16-core 32-thread system with 16 parallel jobs (8 on each socket), the aggregrate bandwidth of the fio test on an XFS ramdisk were as follows: I/O Type w/o patch with patch -------- --------- ---------- random read 8141.2 MB/s 8497.1 MB/s seq read 8229.4 MB/s 8304.2 MB/s random write 1675.5 MB/s 1701.5 MB/s seq write 1681.3 MB/s 1699.9 MB/s There are some increases in the aggregated bandwidth because of the patch. The perf data now became: 70.78% 0.58% fio [k] down_write 70.20% 0.01% fio [k] call_rwsem_down_write_failed 69.70% 1.17% fio [k] rwsem_down_write_failed 59.91% 55.42% fio [k] osq_lock 10.14% 10.14% fio [k] __kvm_vcpu_is_preempted The assembly code was verified by using a test kernel module to compare the output of C __kvm_vcpu_is_preempted() and that of assembly __raw_callee_save___kvm_vcpu_is_preempt() to verify that they matched. x86/kernel: Audit and remove any unnecessary uses of module.h Historically a lot of these existed because we did not have a distinction between what was modular code and what was providing support to modules via EXPORT_SYMBOL and friends. That changed when we forked out support for the latter into the export.h file. This means we should be able to reduce the usage of module.h in code that is obj-y Makefile or bool Kconfig. The advantage in doing so is that module.h itself sources about 15 other headers; adding significantly to what we feed cpp, and it can obscure what headers we are effectively using. Since module.h was the source for init.h (for __init) and for export.h (for EXPORT_SYMBOL) we consider each obj-y/bool instance for the presence of either and replace as needed. Build testing revealed some implicit header usage that was fixed up accordingly. Note that some bool/obj-y instances remain since module.h is the header for some exception table entry stuff, and for things like __init_or_module (code that is tossed when MODULES=n). KVM: Fix steal clock warp during guest CPU hotplug Sometimes, after CPU hotplug you can observe a spike in stolen time (100%) followed by the CPU being marked as 100% idle when it's actually busy with a CPU hog task. The trace looks like the following: cpuhp/1-12 [001] d.h1 167.461657: account_process_tick: steal = 1291385514, prev_steal_time = 0 cpuhp/1-12 [001] d.h1 167.461659: account_process_tick: steal_jiffies = 1291 <idle>-0 [001] d.h1 167.462663: account_process_tick: steal = 18732255, prev_steal_time = 1291000000 <idle>-0 [001] d.h1 167.462664: account_process_tick: steal_jiffies = 18446744072437 The sudden decrease of "steal" causes steal_jiffies to underflow. The root cause is kvm_steal_time being reset to 0 after hot-plugging back in a CPU. Instead, the preexisting value can be used, which is what the core scheduler code expects. locking/pvqspinlock: Rename QUEUED_SPINLOCK to QUEUED_SPINLOCKS Valentin Rothberg reported that we use CONFIG_QUEUED_SPINLOCKS in arch/x86/kernel/paravirt_patch_32.c, while the symbol is called CONFIG_QUEUED_SPINLOCK. (Note the extra 'S') But the typo was natural: the proper English term for such a generic object would be 'queued spinlocks' - so rename this and related symbols accordingly to the plural form. x86/spinlocks/paravirt: Fix memory corruption on unlock Paravirt spinlock clears slowpath flag after doing unlock. As explained by Linus currently it does: prev = *lock; add_smp(&lock->tickets.head, TICKET_LOCK_INC); /* add_smp() is a full mb() */ if (unlikely(lock->tickets.tail & TICKET_SLOWPATH_FLAG)) __ticket_unlock_slowpath(lock, prev); which is *exactly* the kind of things you cannot do with spinlocks, because after you've done the "add_smp()" and released the spinlock for the fast-path, you can't access the spinlock any more. Exactly because a fast-path lock might come in, and release the whole data structure. Linus suggested that we should not do any writes to lock after unlock(), and we can move slowpath clearing to fastpath lock. So this patch implements the fix with: 1. Moving slowpath flag to head (Oleg): Unlocked locks don't care about the slowpath flag; therefore we can keep it set after the last unlock, and clear it again on the first (try)lock. -- this removes the write after unlock. note that keeping slowpath flag would result in unnecessary kicks. By moving the slowpath flag from the tail to the head ticket we also avoid the need to access both the head and tail tickets on unlock. 2. use xadd to avoid read/write after unlock that checks the need for unlock_kick (Linus): We further avoid the need for a read-after-release by using xadd; the prev head value will include the slowpath flag and indicate if we need to do PV kicking of suspended spinners -- on modern chips xadd isn't (much) more expensive than an add + load. x86, kvm: Clear paravirt_enabled on KVM guests for espfix32's benefit paravirt_enabled has the following effects: - Disables the F00F bug workaround warning. There is no F00F bug workaround any more because Linux's standard IDT handling already works around the F00F bug, but the warning still exists. This is only cosmetic, and, in any event, there is no such thing as KVM on a CPU with the F00F bug. - Disables 32-bit APM BIOS detection. On a KVM paravirt system, there should be no APM BIOS anyway. - Disables tboot. I think that the tboot code should check the CPUID hypervisor bit directly if it matters. - paravirt_enabled disables espfix32. espfix32 should *not* be disabled under KVM paravirt. The last point is the purpose of this patch. It fixes a leak of the high 16 bits of the kernel stack address on 32-bit KVM paravirt guests. Fixes CVE-2014-8134. x86: Replace __get_cpu_var uses __get_cpu_var() is used for multiple purposes in the kernel source. One of them is address calculation via the form &__get_cpu_var(x). This calculates the address for the instance of the percpu variable of the current processor based on an offset. Other use cases are for storing and retrieving data from the current processors percpu area. __get_cpu_var() can be used as an lvalue when writing data or on the right side of an assignment. __get_cpu_var() is defined as : #define __get_cpu_var(var) (*this_cpu_ptr(&(var))) __get_cpu_var() always only does an address determination. However, store and retrieve operations could use a segment prefix (or global register on other platforms) to avoid the address calculation. this_cpu_write() and this_cpu_read() can directly take an offset into a percpu area and use optimized assembly code to read and write per cpu variables. This patch converts __get_cpu_var into either an explicit address calculation using this_cpu_ptr() or into a use of this_cpu operations that use the offset. Thereby address calculations are avoided and less registers are used when code is generated. Transformations done to __get_cpu_var() 1. Determine the address of the percpu instance of the current processor. DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y); int *x = &__get_cpu_var(y); Converts to int *x = this_cpu_ptr(&y); 2. Same as #1 but this time an array structure is involved. DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y[20]); int *x = __get_cpu_var(y); Converts to int *x = this_cpu_ptr(y); 3. Retrieve the content of the current processors instance of a per cpu variable. DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y); int x = __get_cpu_var(y) Converts to int x = __this_cpu_read(y); 4. Retrieve the content of a percpu struct DEFINE_PER_CPU(struct mystruct, y); struct mystruct x = __get_cpu_var(y); Converts to memcpy(&x, this_cpu_ptr(&y), sizeof(x)); 5. Assignment to a per cpu variable DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y) __get_cpu_var(y) = x; Converts to __this_cpu_write(y, x); 6. x86: fix page fault tracing when KVM guest support enabled I noticed on some of my systems that page fault tracing doesn't work: cd /sys/kernel/debug/tracing echo 1 > events/exceptions/enable cat trace; # nothing shows up I eventually traced it down to CONFIG_KVM_GUEST. At least in a KVM VM, enabling that option breaks page fault tracing, and disabling fixes it. I tried on some old kernels and this does not appear to be a regression: it never worked. There are two page-fault entry functions today. One when tracing is on and another when it is off. The KVM code calls do_page_fault() directly instead of calling the traced version: > dotraplinkage void __kprobes > do_async_page_fault(struct pt_regs *regs, unsigned long > error_code) > { > enum ctx_state prev_state; > > switch (kvm_read_and_reset_pf_reason()) { > default: > do_page_fault(regs, error_code); > break; > case KVM_PV_REASON_PAGE_NOT_PRESENT: I'm also having problems with the page fault tracing on bare metal (same symptom of no trace output). I'm unsure if it's related. Steven had an alternative to this which has zero overhead when tracing is off where this includes the standard noops even when tracing is disabled. I'm unconvinced that the extra complexity of his apporach: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20140508194508.561ed220@gandalf.local.home is worth it, expecially considering that the KVM code is already making page fault entry slower here. x86, kvm: correctly access the KVM_CPUID_FEATURES leaf at 0x40000101 When Hyper-V hypervisor leaves are present, KVM must relocate its own leaves at 0x40000100, because Windows does not look for Hyper-V leaves at indices other than 0x40000000. In this case, the KVM features are at 0x40000101, but the old code would always look at 0x40000001. Fix by using kvm_cpuid_base(). x86: Correctly detect hypervisor We try to handle the hypervisor compatibility mode by detecting hypervisor through a specific order. This is not robust, since hypervisors may implement each others features. This patch tries to handle this situation by always choosing the last one in the CPUID leaves. This is done by letting .detect() return a priority instead of true/false and just re-using the CPUID leaf where the signature were found as the priority (or 1 if it was found by DMI). Then we can just pick hypervisor who has the highest priority. Other sophisticated detection method could also be implemented on top. Suggested by H. Peter Anvin and Paolo Bonzini. Acked-by: K. Y. x86: delete __cpuinit usage from all x86 files The __cpuinit type of throwaway sections might have made sense some time ago when RAM was more constrained, but now the savings do not offset the cost and complications. For example, the fix in commit 5e427ec2d0 ("x86: Fix bit corruption at CPU resume time") is a good example of the nasty type of bugs that can be created with improper use of the various __init prefixes. After a discussion on LKML[1] it was decided that cpuinit should go the way of devinit and be phased out. Once all the users are gone, we can then finally remove the macros themselves from linux/init.h. Note that some harmless section mismatch warnings may result, since notify_cpu_starting() and cpu_up() are arch independent (kernel/cpu.c) are flagged as __cpuinit -- so if we remove the __cpuinit from arch specific callers, we will also get section mismatch warnings. As an intermediate step, we intend to turn the linux/init.h cpuinit content into no-ops as early as possible, since that will get rid of these warnings. In any case, they are temporary and harmless. This removes all the arch/x86 uses of the __cpuinit macros from all C files. x86 only had the one __CPUINIT used in assembly files, and it wasn't paired off with a .previous or a __FINIT, so we can delete it directly w/o any corresponding additional change there. context_tracking: Restore correct previous context state on exception exit On exception exit, we restore the previous context tracking state based on the regs of the interrupted frame. Iff that frame is in user mode as stated by user_mode() helper, we restore the context tracking user mode. However there is a tiny chunck of low level arch code after we pass through user_enter() and until the CPU eventually resumes userspace. If an exception happens in this tiny area, exception_enter() correctly exits the context tracking user mode but exception_exit() won't restore it because of the value returned by user_mode(regs). As a result we may return to userspace with the wrong context tracking state. To fix this, change exception_enter() to return the context tracking state prior to its call and pass this saved state to exception_exit(). This restores the real context tracking state of the interrupted frame. (May be this patch was suggested to me, I don't recall exactly. If so, sorry for the missing credit). x86, kvm: Fix kvm's use of __pa() on percpu areas In short, it is illegal to call __pa() on an address holding a percpu variable. This replaces those __pa() calls with slow_virt_to_phys(). All of the cases in this patch are in boot time (or CPU hotplug time at worst) code, so the slow pagetable walking in slow_virt_to_phys() is not expected to have a performance impact. The times when this actually matters are pretty obscure (certain 32-bit NUMA systems), but it _does_ happen. It is important to keep KVM guests working on these systems because the real hardware is getting harder and harder to find. This bug manifested first by me seeing a plain hang at boot after this message: CPU 0 irqstacks, hard=f3018000 soft=f301a000 or, sometimes, it would actually make it out to the console: [ 0.000000] BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at ffffffff I eventually traced it down to the KVM async pagefault code. This can be worked around by disabling that code either at compile-time, or on the kernel command-line. The kvm async pagefault code was injecting page faults in to the guest which the guest misinterpreted because its "reason" was not being properly sent from the host. The guest passes a physical address of an per-cpu async page fault structure via an MSR to the host. Since __pa() is broken on percpu data, the physical address it sent was bascially bogus and the host went scribbling on random data. The guest never saw the real reason for the page fault (it was injected by the host), assumed that the kernel had taken a _real_ page fault, and panic()'d. The behavior varied, though, depending on what got corrupted by the bad write. x86/apic: Allow x2apic without IR on VMware platform This patch updates x2apic initializaition code to allow x2apic on VMware platform even without interrupt remapping support. The hypervisor_x2apic_available hook was added in x2apic initialization code and used by KVM and XEN, before this. I have also cleaned up that code to export this hook through the hypervisor_x86 structure. Compile tested for KVM and XEN configs, this patch doesn't have any functional effect on those two platforms. Add rcu user eqs exception hooks for async page fault This patch adds user eqs exception hooks for async page fault page not present code path, to exit the user eqs and re-enter it as necessary. Async page fault is different from other exceptions that it may be triggered from idle process, so we still need rcu_irq_enter() and rcu_irq_exit() to exit cpu idle eqs when needed, to protect the code that needs use rcu. As Frederic pointed out it would be safest and simplest to protect the whole kvm_async_pf_task_wait(). Otherwise, "we need to check all the code there deeply for potential RCU uses and ensure it will never be extended later to use RCU.". However, We'd better re-enter the cpu idle eqs if we get the exception in cpu idle eqs, by calling rcu_irq_exit() before native_safe_halt(). So the patch does what Frederic suggested for rcu_irq_*() API usage here, except that I moved the rcu_irq_*() pair originally in do_async_page_fault() into kvm_async_pf_task_wait(). That's because, I think it's better to have rcu_irq_*() pairs to be in one function ( rcu_irq_exit() after rcu_irq_enter() ), especially here, kvm_async_pf_task_wait() has other callers, which might cause rcu_irq_exit() be called without a matching rcu_irq_enter() before it, which is illegal if the cpu happens to be in rcu idle state. static keys: Introduce 'struct static_key', static_key_true()/false() and static_key_slow_[inc|dec]() So here's a boot tested patch on top of Jason's series that does all the cleanups I talked about and turns jump labels into a more intuitive to use facility. It should also address the various misconceptions and confusions that surround jump labels. Typical usage scenarios: #include <linux/static_key.h> struct static_key key = STATIC_KEY_INIT_TRUE; if (static_key_false(&key)) do unlikely code else do likely code Or: if (static_key_true(&key)) do likely code else do unlikely code The static key is modified via: static_key_slow_inc(&key); ... static_key_slow_dec(&key); The 'slow' prefix makes it abundantly clear that this is an expensive operation. I've updated all in-kernel code to use this everywhere. Note that I (intentionally) have not pushed through the rename blindly through to the lowest levels: the actual jump-label patching arch facility should be named like that, so we want to decouple jump labels from the static-key facility a bit. On non-jump-label enabled architectures static keys default to likely()/unlikely() branches. KVM: Handle async PF in a guest. When async PF capability is detected hook up special page fault handler that will handle async page fault events and bypass other page faults to regular page fault handler. Also add async PF handling to nested SVM emulation. Async PF always generates exit to L1 where vcpu thread will be scheduled out until page is available. KVM guest: do not batch pte updates from interrupt context Commit b8bcfe997e4 made paravirt pte updates synchronous in interrupt context. Unfortunately the KVM pv mmu code caches the lazy/nonlazy mode internally, so a pte update from interrupt context during a lazy mmu operation can be batched while it should be performed synchronously. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=518022 Drop the internal mode variable and use paravirt_get_lazy_mode(), which returns the correct state. x86, kvm: Fix section mismatches in kvm.c The function paravirt_ops_setup() has been refering the variable no_timer_check, which is a __initdata. Thus generates the following warning. paravirt_ops_setup() function is called from kvm_guest_init() which is a __init function. So to fix this we mark paravirt_ops_setup as __init. The sections-check output that warned us about this was: LD arch/x86/built-in.o WARNING: arch/x86/built-in.o(.text+0x166ce): Section mismatch in reference from the function paravirt_ops_setup() to the variable .init.data:no_timer_check The function paravirt_ops_setup() references the variable __initdata no_timer_check. x86/paravirt: flush pending mmu updates on context switch Impact: allow preemption during lazy mmu updates If we're in lazy mmu mode when context switching, leave lazy mmu mode, but remember the task's state in TIF_LAZY_MMU_UPDATES. When we resume the task, check this flag and re-enter lazy mmu mode if its set. This sets things up for allowing lazy mmu mode while preemptible, though that won't actually be active until the next change. x86, paravirt_ops: use unsigned long instead of u32 for alloc_p*() pfn args This patch changes the pfn args from 'u32' to 'unsigned long' on alloc_p*() functions on paravirt_ops, and the corresponding implementations for Xen and VMI. The prototypes for CONFIG_PARAVIRT=n are already using unsigned long, so paravirt.h now matches the prototypes on asm-x86/pgalloc.h. It shouldn't result in any changes on generated code on 32-bit, with or without CONFIG_PARAVIRT. On both cases, 'codiff -f' didn't show any change after applying this patch. On 64-bit, there are (expected) binary changes only when CONFIG_PARAVIRT is enabled, as the patch is really supposed to change the size of the pfn args.
