x86/unwind/orc: Add ELF section with ORC version identifier Commits ffb1b4a41016 ("x86/unwind/orc: Add 'signal' field to ORC metadata") and fb799447ae29 ("x86,objtool: Split UNWIND_HINT_EMPTY in two") changed the ORC format. Although ORC is internal to the kernel, it's the only way for external tools to get reliable kernel stack traces on x86-64. In particular, the drgn debugger [1] uses ORC for stack unwinding, and these format changes broke it [2]. As the drgn maintainer, I don't care how often or how much the kernel changes the ORC format as long as I have a way to detect the change. It suffices to store a version identifier in the vmlinux and kernel module ELF files (to use when parsing ORC sections from ELF), and in kernel memory (to use when parsing ORC from a core dump+symbol table). Rather than hard-coding a version number that needs to be manually bumped, Peterz suggested hashing the definitions from orc_types.h. If there is a format change that isn't caught by this, the hashing script can be updated. This patch adds an .orc_header allocated ELF section containing the 20-byte hash to vmlinux and kernel modules, along with the corresponding __start_orc_header and __stop_orc_header symbols in vmlinux. 1: https://github.com/osandov/drgn 2: https://github.com/osandov/drgn/issues/303 Fixes: ffb1b4a41016 ("x86/unwind/orc: Add 'signal' field to ORC metadata") Fixes: fb799447ae29 ("x86,objtool: Split UNWIND_HINT_EMPTY in two") Signed-off-by: Omar Sandoval <osandov@fb.com> Signed-off-by: Peter Zijlstra (Intel) <peterz@infradead.org> Acked-by: Josh Poimboeuf <jpoimboe@kernel.org> Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/aef9c8dc43915b886a8c48509a12ec1b006ca1ca.1686690801.git.osandov@osandov.com

asm-generic: make more kernel-space headers mandatory Change a header to mandatory-y if both of the following are met: [1] At least one architecture (except um) specifies it as generic-y in arch/*/include/asm/Kbuild [2] Every architecture (except um) either has its own implementation (arch/*/include/asm/*.h) or specifies it as generic-y in arch/*/include/asm/Kbuild This commit was generated by the following shell script. ----------------------------------->8----------------------------------- arches=$(cd arch; ls -1 | sed -e '/Kconfig/d' -e '/um/d') tmpfile=$(mktemp) grep "^mandatory-y +=" include/asm-generic/Kbuild > $tmpfile find arch -path 'arch/*/include/asm/Kbuild' | xargs sed -n 's/^generic-y += \(.*\)/\1/p' | sort -u | while read header do mandatory=yes for arch in $arches do if ! grep -q "generic-y += $header" arch/$arch/include/asm/Kbuild && ! [ -f arch/$arch/include/asm/$header ]; then mandatory=no break fi done if [ "$mandatory" = yes ]; then echo "mandatory-y += $header" >> $tmpfile for arch in $arches do sed -i "/generic-y += $header/d" arch/$arch/include/asm/Kbuild done fi done sed -i '/^mandatory-y +=/d' include/asm-generic/Kbuild LANG=C sort $tmpfile >> include/asm-generic/Kbuild ----------------------------------->8----------------------------------- One obvious benefit is the diff stat: 25 files changed, 52 insertions(+), 557 deletions(-) It is tedious to list generic-y for each arch that needs it. So, mandatory-y works like a fallback default (by just wrapping asm-generic one) when arch does not have a specific header implementation. See the following commits: def3f7cefe4e81c296090e1722a76551142c227c a1b39bae16a62ce4aae02d958224f19316d98b24 It is tedious to convert headers one by one, so I processed by a shell script. module: use relative references for __ksymtab entries An ordinary arm64 defconfig build has ~64 KB worth of __ksymtab entries, each consisting of two 64-bit fields containing absolute references, to the symbol itself and to a char array containing its name, respectively. When we build the same configuration with KASLR enabled, we end up with an additional ~192 KB of relocations in the .init section, i.e., one 24 byte entry for each absolute reference, which all need to be processed at boot time. Given how the struct kernel_symbol that describes each entry is completely local to module.c (except for the references emitted by EXPORT_SYMBOL() itself), we can easily modify it to contain two 32-bit relative references instead. This reduces the size of the __ksymtab section by 50% for all 64-bit architectures, and gets rid of the runtime relocations entirely for architectures implementing KASLR, either via standard PIE linking (arm64) or using custom host tools (x86). Note that the binary search involving __ksymtab contents relies on each section being sorted by symbol name. This is implemented based on the input section names, not the names in the ksymtab entries, so this patch does not interfere with that. Given that the use of place-relative relocations requires support both in the toolchain and in the module loader, we cannot enable this feature for all architectures. So make it dependent on whether CONFIG_HAVE_ARCH_PREL32_RELOCATIONS is defined. x86/build: Remove three unneeded genhdr-y entries In x86's include/asm/Kbuild three entries are appended to the genhdr-y make variable: genhdr-y += unistd_32.h genhdr-y += unistd_64.h genhdr-y += unistd_x32.h The same entries are also appended to that variable in include/uapi/asm/Kbuild. So commit: 10b63956fce7 ("UAPI: Plumb the UAPI Kbuilds into the user header installation and checking") ... removed these three entries from include/asm/Kbuild. But, apparently, some merge conflict resolution re-added them. The net effect is, in short, that the genhdr-y make variable contains these file names twice and, as a consequence, that the corresponding headers get installed twice. And so the build prints: INSTALL usr/include/asm/ (65 files) ... while in reality only 62 files are installed in that directory. Nothing breaks because of all that, but it's a good idea to finally remove these unneeded entries nevertheless. sched, x86: Provide a per-cpu preempt_count implementation Convert x86 to use a per-cpu preemption count. The reason for doing so is that accessing per-cpu variables is a lot cheaper than accessing thread_info variables. We still need to save/restore the actual preemption count due to PREEMPT_ACTIVE so we place the per-cpu __preempt_count variable in the same cache-line as the other hot __switch_to() variables such as current_task. NOTE: this save/restore is required even for !PREEMPT kernels as cond_resched() also relies on preempt_count's PREEMPT_ACTIVE to ignore task_struct::state. Also rename thread_info::preempt_count to ensure nobody is 'accidentally' still poking at it. asm-generic: Add default clkdev.h Ease the deployment of clkdev by providing a default asm/clkdev.h for use if the arch does not have an include/asm/clkdev.h. Due to limitations in Kbuild we manually add clkdev.h to all architectures that don't have one rather than having the header appear by default. UAPI: Plumb the UAPI Kbuilds into the user header installation and checking Plumb the UAPI Kbuilds into the user header installation and checking system. As the headers are split the entries will be transferred across from the old Kbuild files to the UAPI Kbuild files. The changes made in this commit are: (1) Exported generated files (of which there are currently four) are moved to uapi/ directories under the appropriate generated/ directory, thus we get: include/generated/uapi/linux/version.h arch/x86/include/generated/uapi/asm/unistd_32.h arch/x86/include/generated/uapi/asm/unistd_64.h arch/x86/include/generated/uapi/asm/unistd_x32.h These paths were added to the build as -I flags in a previous patch. (2) scripts/Makefile.headersinst is now given the UAPI path to install from rather than the old path. It then determines the old path from that and includes that Kbuild also if it exists, thus permitting the headers to exist in either directory during the changeover. I also renamed the "install" variable to "installdir" as it refers to a directory not the install program. (3) scripts/headers_install.pl is altered to take a list of source file paths instead of just their names so that the makefile can tell it exactly where to find each file. For the moment, files can be obtained from one of four places for each output directory: .../include/uapi/foo/ .../include/generated/uapi/foo/ .../include/foo/ .../include/generated/foo/ The non-UAPI paths will be dropped later. x86: Generate system call tables and unistd_*.h from tables Generate system call tables and unistd_*.h automatically from the tables in arch/x86/syscalls. All other information, like NR_syscalls, is auto-generated, some of which is in asm-offsets_*.c. This allows us to keep all the system call information in one place, and allows for kernel space and user space to see different information; this is currently used for the ia32 system call numbers when building the 64-bit kernel, but will be used by the x32 ABI in the near future. This also removes some gratuitious differences between i386, x86-64 and ia32; in particular, now all system call tables are generated with the same mechanism. Cc: H. J. hw-breakpoints: Rewrite the hw-breakpoints layer on top of perf events This patch rebase the implementation of the breakpoints API on top of perf events instances. Each breakpoints are now perf events that handle the register scheduling, thread/cpu attachment, etc.. The new layering is now made as follows: ptrace kgdb ftrace perf syscall \ | / / \ | / / / Core breakpoint API / / | / | / Breakpoints perf events | | Breakpoints PMU ---- Debug Register constraints handling (Part of core breakpoint API) | | Hardware debug registers Reasons of this rewrite: - Use the centralized/optimized pmu registers scheduling, implying an easier arch integration - More powerful register handling: perf attributes (pinned/flexible events, exclusive/non-exclusive, tunable period, etc...) Impact: - New perf ABI: the hardware breakpoints counters - Ptrace breakpoints setting remains tricky and still needs some per thread breakpoints references. Todo (in the order): - Support breakpoints perf counter events for perf tools (ie: implement perf_bpcounter_event()) - Support from perf tools Changes in v2: - Follow the perf "event " rename - The ptrace regression have been fixed (ptrace breakpoint perf events weren't released when a task ended) - Drop the struct hw_breakpoint and store generic fields in perf_event_attr. - Separate core and arch specific headers, drop asm-generic/hw_breakpoint.h and create linux/hw_breakpoint.h - Use new generic len/type for breakpoint - Handle off case: when breakpoints api is not supported by an arch Changes in v3: - Fix broken CONFIG_KVM, we need to propagate the breakpoint api changes to kvm when we exit the guest and restore the bp registers to the host. Changes in v4: - Drop the hw_breakpoint_restore() stub as it is only used by KVM - EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL hw_breakpoint_restore() as KVM can be built as a module - Restore the breakpoints unconditionally on kvm guest exit: TIF_DEBUG_THREAD doesn't anymore cover every cases of running breakpoints and vcpu->arch.switch_db_regs might not always be set when the guest used debug registers. (Waiting for a reliable optimization) Changes in v5: - Split-up the asm-generic/hw-breakpoint.h moving to linux/hw_breakpoint.h into a separate patch - Optimize the breakpoints restoring while switching from kvm guest to host. We only want to restore the state if we have active breakpoints to the host, otherwise we don't care about messed-up address registers. - Add asm/hw_breakpoint.h to Kbuild - Fix bad breakpoint type in trace_selftest.c Changes in v6: - Fix wrong header inclusion in trace.h (triggered a build error with CONFIG_FTRACE_SELFTEST Signed-off-by: Frederic Weisbecker <fweisbec@gmail.com> Cc: Prasad <prasad@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Cc: Alan Stern <stern@rowland.harvard.edu> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Cc: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com> Cc: Steven Rostedt <rostedt@goodmis.org> Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu> Cc: Jan Kiszka <jan.kiszka@web.de> Cc: Jiri Slaby <jirislaby@gmail.com> Cc: Li Zefan <lizf@cn.fujitsu.com> Cc: Avi Kivity <avi@redhat.com> Cc: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org> Cc: Mike Galbraith <efault@gmx.de> Cc: Masami Hiramatsu <mhiramat@redhat.com> Cc: Paul Mundt <lethal@linux-sh.org>
