s390/cpum_cf: rework PER_CPU_DEFINE of struct cpu_cf_events Struct cpu_cf_events is a large data structure and is statically defined for each possible CPU. Rework this and replace it by dynamically allocated data structures created when a perf_event_open() system call is invoked or an access via character device /dev/hwctr takes place. It is replaced by an array of pointers to all possible CPUs and reference counting. The array of pointers is allocated when the first event is created. For each online CPU an event is installed on, a struct cpu_cf_events is allocated and a pointer to struct cpu_cf_events is stored in the array: CPU 0 1 2 3 ... N +---+---+---+---+---+---+ cpu_cf_root::cpucf--> | * | | | |...| | +-|-+---+---+---+---+---+ | | \|/ +-------------+ |cpu_cf_events| | | +-------------+ With this approach the large data structure is only allocated when an event is actually installed and used. Also implement proper reference counting for allocation and removal. During interrupt processing make sure the pointer to cpu_cf_events is valid. The interrupt handler is shared and might be called when no event is active. This requires checking for a valid pointer to struct cpu_cf_events. When the pointer to the per-cpu cpu_cf_events is NULL, simply return. s390/cpum_cf: open access to hwctr device for CAP_PERFMON privileged process The device /dev/hwctr was introduced to access complete CPU Measurement facility counter sets via an ioctl system call. The access the to device is limited to privileged processes running as root or superuser. The capability CAP_SYS_ADMIN is required. The device permissions are read/write for the device owner root. There is no need for this restriction. Make the device access permission read/write for all and reduce the capabilities to CAP_PERFMON. Any user space program with the CAP_PERFMON capability assigned to it can now read and display the CPU Measurement facility counter sets. s390/cpum_cf: introduce static CPU counter facility information The CPU measurement facility counter information instruction qctri() retrieves information about the available counter sets. The information varies between machine generations, but is constant when running on a particular machine. For example the CPU measurement facility counter first and second version numbers determine the amount of counters in a counter set. This information never changes. The counter sets are identical for all CPUs in the system. It does not matter which CPU performs the instruction. Authorization control of the CPU Measurement facility can only be changed in the activation profile while the LPAR is not running. Retrieve the CPU measurement counter information at device driver initialization time and use its constant values. Function validate_ctr_version() verifies if a user provided CPU Measurement counter facility counter is valid and defined. It now uses the newly introduced static CPU counter facility information. To avoid repeated recalculation of the counter set sizes (numbers of counters per set), which never changes on a running machine, calculate the counter set size once at device driver initialization and store the result in an array. Functions cpum_cf_make_setsize() and cpum_cf_read_setsize() are introduced. Finally remove cpu_cf_events::info member and use the static CPU counter facility information instead. s390: raise minimum supported machine generation to z10 Machine generations up to z9 (released in May 2006) have been officially out of service for several years now (z9 end of service - January 31, 2019). No distributions build kernels supporting those old machine generations anymore, except Debian, which seems to pick the oldest supported generation. The team supporting Debian on s390 has been notified about the change. Raising minimum supported machine generation to z10 helps to reduce maintenance cost and effectively remove code, which is not getting enough testing coverage due to lack of older hardware and distributions support. Besides that this unblocks some optimization opportunities and allows to use wider instruction set in asm files for future features implementation. Due to this change spectre mitigation and usercopy implementations could be drastically simplified and many newer instructions could be converted from ".insn" encoding to instruction names. s390/cpumf: Allow concurrent access for CPU Measurement Counter Facility Commit cf6acb8bdb1d ("s390/cpumf: Add support for complete counter set extraction") allows access to the CPU Measurement Counter Facility via character device /dev/hwctr. The access was exclusive via this device or via perf_event_open() system call. Only one path at a time was permitted. This patch removes this restriction and allows concurrent access to the CPU Measurement Counter Facility from multiple processes at the same time via perf_event_open() SVC and via /dev/hwctr device. The access via /dev/hwctr device is still exclusive, only one process is allowed to access this device. s390/cpumf: remove counter transaction call backs The command 'perf stat -e cycles ...' triggers the following function sequence in the CPU Measurement Facility counter device driver: perf_pmu_event_init() __hw_perf_event_init() validate_ctr_auth() validate_ctr_version() During event creation, the counter number is checked in functions validate_ctr_auth() and validate_ctr_version() to verify it is a valid counter and supported by the hardware. If this is not the case, both functions return an error and the event is not created. System call perf_event_open() returns an error in this case. Later on the event is installed in the kernel event subsystem and the driver functions cpumf_pmu_add() and cpumf_pmu_commit_txn() are called to install the counter event by the hardware. Since both events have been verified at event creation, there is no need to re-evaluate the authorization state. This can not change since on * LPARs the authorization change requires a restart of the LPAR (and thus a reboot of the kernel) * DPMs can not take resources away, just add them. Also the sequence of CPU Measurement facility counter device driver calls is cpumf_pmu_start_txn cpumf_pmu_add cpumf_pmu_start cpumf_pmu_commit_txn for every single event. Which means the condition in cpumf_pmu_add() is never met and validate_ctr_auth() is never called. This leaves the counter device driver transaction functions with just one task: start_txn: Verify a transaction is not in flight and call perf_pmu_disable() cancel_txn, commit_txn: Verify a transaction is in flight and call perf_pmu_enable() The same functionality is provided by the default transaction handling functions in kernel/events/core.c. s390/cpumf: Adjust registration of s390 PMU device drivers Linux-next commit titled "perf/core: Optimize perf_init_event()" changed the semantics of PMU device driver registration. It was done to speed up the lookup/handling of PMU device driver specific events. It also enforces that only one PMU device driver will be registered of type PERF_EVENT_RAW. This change added these line in function perf_pmu_register(): ... + ret = idr_alloc(&pmu_idr, pmu, max, 0, GFP_KERNEL); + if (ret < 0) goto free_pdc; + + WARN_ON(type >= 0 && ret != type); The warn_on generates a message. We have 3 PMU device drivers, each registered as type PERF_TYPE_RAW. The cf_diag device driver (arch/s390/kernel/perf_cpumf_cf_diag.c) always hits the WARN_ON because it is the second PMU device driver (after sampling device driver arch/s390/kernel/perf_cpumf_sf.c) which is registered as type 4 (PERF_TYPE_RAW). So when the sampling device driver is registered, ret has value 4. When cf_diag device driver is registered with type 4, ret has value of 5 and WARN_ON fires. Adjust the PMU device drivers for s390 to support the new semantics required by perf_pmu_register(). s390/cpum_cf: Reject request for sampling in event initialization On s390 command perf top fails [root@s35lp76 perf] # ./perf top -F100000 --stdio Error: cycles: PMU Hardware doesn't support sampling/overflow-interrupts. Try 'perf stat' [root@s35lp76 perf] # Using event -e rb0000 works as designed. Event rb0000 is the event number of the sampling facility for basic sampling. During system start up the following PMUs are installed in the kernel's PMU list (from head to tail): cpum_cf --> s390 PMU counter facility device driver cpum_sf --> s390 PMU sampling facility device driver uprobe kprobe tracepoint task_clock cpu_clock Perf top executes following functions and calls perf_event_open(2) system call with different parameters many times: cmd_top --> __cmd_top --> perf_evlist__add_default --> __perf_evlist__add_default --> perf_evlist__new_cycles (creates event type:0 (HW) config 0 (CPU_CYCLES) --> perf_event_attr__set_max_precise_ip Uses perf_event_open(2) to detect correct precise_ip level. Fails 3 times on s390 which is ok. Then functions cmd_top --> __cmd_top --> perf_top__start_counters -->perf_evlist__config --> perf_can_comm_exec --> perf_probe_api This functions test support for the following events: "cycles:u", "instructions:u", "cpu-clock:u" using --> perf_do_probe_api --> perf_event_open_cloexec Test the close on exec flag support with perf_event_open(2). perf_do_probe_api returns true if the event is supported. The function returns true because event cpu-clock is supported by the PMU cpu_clock. This is achieved by many calls to perf_event_open(2). Function perf_top__start_counters now calls perf_evsel__open() for every event, which is the default event cpu_cycles (config:0) and type HARDWARE (type:0) which a predfined frequence of 4000. Given the above order of the PMU list, the PMU cpum_cf gets called first and returns 0, which indicates support for this sampling. The event is fully allocated in the function perf_event_open (file kernel/event/core.c near line 10521 and the following check fails: event = perf_event_alloc(&attr, cpu, task, group_leader, NULL, NULL, NULL, cgroup_fd); if (IS_ERR(event)) { err = PTR_ERR(event); goto err_cred; } if (is_sampling_event(event)) { if (event->pmu->capabilities & PERF_PMU_CAP_NO_INTERRUPT) { err = -EOPNOTSUPP; goto err_alloc; } } The check for the interrupt capabilities fails and the system call perf_event_open() returns -EOPNOTSUPP (-95). Add a check to return -ENODEV when sampling is requested in PMU cpum_cf. This allows common kernel code in the perf_event_open() system call to test the next PMU in above list. perf/core: Drop PERF_EVENT_TXN We currently use PERF_EVENT_TXN flag to determine if we are in the middle of a transaction. If in a transaction, we defer the schedulability checks from pmu->add() operation to the pmu->commit() operation. Now that we have "transaction types" (PERF_PMU_TXN_ADD, PERF_PMU_TXN_READ) we can use the type to determine if we are in a transaction and drop the PERF_EVENT_TXN flag. When PERF_EVENT_TXN is dropped, the cpuhw->group_flag on some architectures becomes unused, so drop that field as well. perf/core: Add a 'flags' parameter to the PMU transactional interfaces Currently, the PMU interface allows reading only one counter at a time. But some PMUs like the 24x7 counters in Power, support reading several counters at once. To leveage this functionality, extend the transaction interface to support a "transaction type". The first type, PERF_PMU_TXN_ADD, refers to the existing transactions, i.e. used to _schedule_ all the events on the PMU as a group. A second transaction type, PERF_PMU_TXN_READ, will be used in a follow-on patch, by the 24x7 counters to read several counters at once. Extend the transaction interfaces to the PMU to accept a 'txn_flags' parameter and use this parameter to ignore any transactions that are not of type PERF_PMU_TXN_ADD. Thanks to Peter Zijlstra for his input. s390: Replace __get_cpu_var uses __get_cpu_var() is used for multiple purposes in the kernel source. One of them is address calculation via the form &__get_cpu_var(x). This calculates the address for the instance of the percpu variable of the current processor based on an offset. Other use cases are for storing and retrieving data from the current processors percpu area. __get_cpu_var() can be used as an lvalue when writing data or on the right side of an assignment. __get_cpu_var() is defined as : #define __get_cpu_var(var) (*this_cpu_ptr(&(var))) __get_cpu_var() always only does an address determination. However, store and retrieve operations could use a segment prefix (or global register on other platforms) to avoid the address calculation. this_cpu_write() and this_cpu_read() can directly take an offset into a percpu area and use optimized assembly code to read and write per cpu variables. This patch converts __get_cpu_var into either an explicit address calculation using this_cpu_ptr() or into a use of this_cpu operations that use the offset. Thereby address calculations are avoided and less registers are used when code is generated. At the end of the patch set all uses of __get_cpu_var have been removed so the macro is removed too. The patch set includes passes over all arches as well. Once these operations are used throughout then specialized macros can be defined in non -x86 arches as well in order to optimize per cpu access by f.e. using a global register that may be set to the per cpu base. Transformations done to __get_cpu_var() 1. Determine the address of the percpu instance of the current processor. DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y); int *x = &__get_cpu_var(y); Converts to int *x = this_cpu_ptr(&y); 2. Same as #1 but this time an array structure is involved. DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y[20]); int *x = __get_cpu_var(y); Converts to int *x = this_cpu_ptr(y); 3. Retrieve the content of the current processors instance of a per cpu variable. DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y); int x = __get_cpu_var(y) Converts to int x = __this_cpu_read(y); 4. Retrieve the content of a percpu struct DEFINE_PER_CPU(struct mystruct, y); struct mystruct x = __get_cpu_var(y); Converts to memcpy(&x, this_cpu_ptr(&y), sizeof(x)); 5. Assignment to a per cpu variable DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y) __get_cpu_var(y) = x; Converts to this_cpu_write(y, x); 6. s390: delete __cpuinit usage from all s390 files The __cpuinit type of throwaway sections might have made sense some time ago when RAM was more constrained, but now the savings do not offset the cost and complications. For example, the fix in commit 5e427ec2d0 ("x86: Fix bit corruption at CPU resume time") is a good example of the nasty type of bugs that can be created with improper use of the various __init prefixes. After a discussion on LKML[1] it was decided that cpuinit should go the way of devinit and be phased out. Once all the users are gone, we can then finally remove the macros themselves from linux/init.h. Note that some harmless section mismatch warnings may result, since notify_cpu_starting() and cpu_up() are arch independent (kernel/cpu.c) are flagged as __cpuinit -- so if we remove the __cpuinit from arch specific callers, we will also get section mismatch warnings. As an intermediate step, we intend to turn the linux/init.h cpuinit content into no-ops as early as possible, since that will get rid of these warnings. In any case, they are temporary and harmless. This removes all the arch/s390 uses of the __cpuinit macros from all C files. Currently s390 does not have any __CPUINIT used in assembly files. s390/irq: remove split irq fields from /proc/stat Now that irq sum accounting for /proc/stat's "intr" line works again we have the oddity that the sum field (first field) contains only the sum of the second (external irqs) and third field (I/O interrupts). The reason for that is that these two fields are already sums of all other fields. So if we would sum up everything we would count every interrupt twice. This is broken since the split interrupt accounting was merged two years ago: 052ff461c8427629aee887ccc27478fc7373237c "[S390] irq: have detailed statistics for interrupt types". To fix this remove the split interrupt fields from /proc/stat's "intr" line again and only have them in /proc/interrupts. This restores the old behaviour, seems to be the only sane fix and mimics a behaviour from other architectures where /proc/interrupts also contains more than /proc/stat's "intr" line does. [S390] perf: add support for s390x CPU counters Add a perf PMU to access the CPU-measurement counter facility CPUM CF. CPUM CF provides multiple counter sets for measuring generic, problem-state, and crypto activaties. Also an extended counter set for the IBM System z10 and IBM z196 mainframes is available. Counters from the basic and problem-state counter set are mapped to generic perf hardware events. Other counters are accessible through raw events.
