s390: compile relocatable kernel without -fPIE On s390, currently kernel uses the '-fPIE' compiler flag for compiling vmlinux. This has a few problems: - It uses dynamic symbols (.dynsym), for which the linker refuses to allow more than 64k sections. This can break features which use '-ffunction-sections' and '-fdata-sections', including kpatch-build [1] and Function Granular KASLR. - It unnecessarily uses GOT relocations, adding an extra layer of indirection for many memory accesses. Instead of using '-fPIE', resolve all the relocations at link time and then manually adjust any absolute relocations (R_390_64) during boot. This is done by first telling the linker to preserve all relocations during the vmlinux link. (Note this is harmless: they are later stripped in the vmlinux.bin link.) Then use the 'relocs' tool to find all absolute relocations (R_390_64) which apply to allocatable sections. The offsets of those relocations are saved in a special section which is then used to adjust the relocations during boot. (Note: For some reason, Clang occasionally creates a GOT reference, even without '-fPIE'. So Clang-compiled kernels have a GOT, which needs to be adjusted.) On my mostly-defconfig kernel, this reduces kernel text size by ~1.3%. [1] https://github.com/dynup/kpatch/issues/1284 [2] https://gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/gcc-patches/2023-June/622872.html [3] https://gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/gcc-patches/2023-August/625986.html Compiler consideration: Gcc recently implemented an optimization [2] for loading symbols without explicit alignment, aligning with the IBM Z ELF ABI. This ABI mandates symbols to reside on a 2-byte boundary, enabling the use of the larl instruction. However, kernel linker scripts may still generate unaligned symbols. To address this, a new -munaligned-symbols option has been introduced [3] in recent gcc versions. This option has to be used with future gcc versions. Older Clang lacks support for handling unaligned symbols generated by kernel linker scripts when the kernel is built without -fPIE. However, future versions of Clang will include support for the -munaligned-symbols option. When the support is unavailable, compile the kernel with -fPIE to maintain the existing behavior. In addition to it: move vmlinux.relocs to safe relocation When the kernel is built with CONFIG_KERNEL_UNCOMPRESSED, the entire uncompressed vmlinux.bin is positioned in the bzImage decompressor image at the default kernel LMA of 0x100000, enabling it to be executed in-place. However, the size of .vmlinux.relocs could be large enough to cause an overlap with the uncompressed kernel at the address 0x100000. To address this issue, .vmlinux.relocs is positioned after the .rodata.compressed in the bzImage. Nevertheless, in this configuration, vmlinux.relocs will overlap with the .bss section of vmlinux.bin. To overcome that, move vmlinux.relocs to a safe location before clearing .bss and handling relocs. Compile warning fix from Sumanth Korikkar: When kernel is built with CONFIG_LD_ORPHAN_WARN and -fno-PIE, there are several warnings: ld: warning: orphan section `.rela.iplt' from `arch/s390/kernel/head64.o' being placed in section `.rela.dyn' ld: warning: orphan section `.rela.head.text' from `arch/s390/kernel/head64.o' being placed in section `.rela.dyn' ld: warning: orphan section `.rela.init.text' from `arch/s390/kernel/head64.o' being placed in section `.rela.dyn' ld: warning: orphan section `.rela.rodata.cst8' from `arch/s390/kernel/head64.o' being placed in section `.rela.dyn' Orphan sections are sections that exist in an object file but don't have a corresponding output section in the final executable. ld raises a warning when it identifies such sections. Eliminate the warning by placing all .rela orphan sections in .rela.dyn and raise an error when size of .rela.dyn is greater than zero. i.e. Dont just neglect orphan sections. This is similar to adjustment performed in x86, where kernel is built with -fno-PIE. commit 5354e84598f2 ("x86/build: Add asserts for unwanted sections") [sumanthk@linux.ibm.com: rebased Josh Poimboeuf patches and move vmlinux.relocs to safe location] [hca@linux.ibm.com: merged compile warning fix from Sumanth] Tested-by: Sumanth Korikkar <sumanthk@linux.ibm.com> Acked-by: Vasily Gorbik <gor@linux.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Josh Poimboeuf <jpoimboe@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Sumanth Korikkar <sumanthk@linux.ibm.com> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20240219132734.22881-4-sumanthk@linux.ibm.com Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20240219132734.22881-5-sumanthk@linux.ibm.com Signed-off-by: Heiko Carstens <hca@linux.ibm.com>

kbuild: unify vdso_install rules Currently, there is no standard implementation for vdso_install, leading to various issues: 1. Code duplication Many architectures duplicate similar code just for copying files to the install destination. Some architectures (arm, sparc, x86) create build-id symlinks, introducing more code duplication. 2. Unintended updates of in-tree build artifacts The vdso_install rule depends on the vdso files to install. It may update in-tree build artifacts. This can be problematic, as explained in commit 19514fc665ff ("arm, kbuild: make "make install" not depend on vmlinux"). 3. Broken code in some architectures Makefile code is often copied from one architecture to another without proper adaptation. 'make vdso_install' for parisc does not work. 'make vdso_install' for s390 installs vdso64, but not vdso32. To address these problems, this commit introduces a generic vdso_install rule. Architectures that support vdso_install need to define vdso-install-y in arch/*/Makefile. vdso-install-y lists the files to install. For example, arch/x86/Makefile looks like this: vdso-install-$(CONFIG_X86_64) += arch/x86/entry/vdso/vdso64.so.dbg vdso-install-$(CONFIG_X86_X32_ABI) += arch/x86/entry/vdso/vdsox32.so.dbg vdso-install-$(CONFIG_X86_32) += arch/x86/entry/vdso/vdso32.so.dbg vdso-install-$(CONFIG_IA32_EMULATION) += arch/x86/entry/vdso/vdso32.so.dbg These files will be installed to $(MODLIB)/vdso/ with the .dbg suffix, if exists, stripped away. vdso-install-y can optionally take the second field after the colon separator. This is needed because some architectures install a vdso file as a different base name. The following is a snippet from arch/arm64/Makefile. vdso-install-$(CONFIG_COMPAT_VDSO) += arch/arm64/kernel/vdso32/vdso.so.dbg:vdso32.so This will rename vdso.so.dbg to vdso32.so during installation. If such architectures change their implementation so that the base names match, this workaround will go away. s390: always build relocatable kernel Nathan Chancellor reported several link errors on s390 with CONFIG_RELOCATABLE disabled, after binutils commit 906f69cf65da ("IBM zSystems: Issue error for *DBL relocs on misaligned symbols"). A similar bug was recently fixed in the kernel with commit c9305b6c1f52 ("s390: fix nospec table alignments"). See https://github.com/ClangBuiltLinux/linux/issues/1747 for an analysis from Ulich Weigand. Therefore always build a relocatable kernel to avoid this problem. kbuild: remove head-y syntax Kbuild puts the objects listed in head-y at the head of vmlinux. Conventionally, we do this for head*.S, which contains the kernel entry point. A counter approach is to control the section order by the linker script. Actually, the code marked as __HEAD goes into the ".head.text" section, which is placed before the normal ".text" section. I do not know if both of them are needed. From the build system perspective, head-y is not mandatory. If you can achieve the proper code placement by the linker script only, it would be cleaner. I collected the current head-y objects into head-object-list.txt. It is a whitelist. My hope is it will be reduced in the long run. gcc-12: disable '-Warray-bounds' universally for now In commit 8b202ee21839 ("s390: disable -Warray-bounds") the s390 people disabled the '-Warray-bounds' warning for gcc-12, because the new logic in gcc would cause warnings for their use of the S390_lowcore macro, which accesses absolute pointers. It turns out gcc-12 has many other issues in this area, so this takes that s390 warning disable logic, and turns it into a kernel build config entry instead. Part of the intent is that we can make this all much more targeted, and use this conflig flag to disable it in only particular configurations that cause problems, with the s390 case as an example: select GCC12_NO_ARRAY_BOUNDS and we could do that for other configuration cases that cause issues. Or we could possibly use the CONFIG_CC_NO_ARRAY_BOUNDS thing in a more targeted way, and disable the warning only for particular uses: again the s390 case as an example: KBUILD_CFLAGS_DECOMPRESSOR += $(if $(CONFIG_CC_NO_ARRAY_BOUNDS),-Wno-array-bounds) but this ends up just doing it globally in the top-level Makefile, since the current issues are spread fairly widely all over: KBUILD_CFLAGS-$(CONFIG_CC_NO_ARRAY_BOUNDS) += -Wno-array-bounds We'll try to limit this later, since the gcc-12 problems are rare enough that *much* of the kernel can be built with it without disabling this warning. s390: disable -Warray-bounds gcc-12 shows a lot of array bound warnings on s390. This is caused by the S390_lowcore macro which uses a hardcoded address of 0. Wrapping that with absolute_pointer() works, but gcc no longer knows that a 12 bit displacement is sufficient to access lowcore. So it emits instructions like 'lghi %r1,0; l %rx,xxx(%r1)' instead of a single load/store instruction. As s390 stores variables often read/written in lowcore, this is considered problematic. Therefore disable -Warray-bounds on s390 for gcc-12 for the time being, until there is a better solution. s390: raise minimum supported machine generation to z10 Machine generations up to z9 (released in May 2006) have been officially out of service for several years now (z9 end of service - January 31, 2019). No distributions build kernels supporting those old machine generations anymore, except Debian, which seems to pick the oldest supported generation. The team supporting Debian on s390 has been notified about the change. Raising minimum supported machine generation to z10 helps to reduce maintenance cost and effectively remove code, which is not getting enough testing coverage due to lack of older hardware and distributions support. Besides that this unblocks some optimization opportunities and allows to use wider instruction set in asm files for future features implementation. Due to this change spectre mitigation and usercopy implementations could be drastically simplified and many newer instructions could be converted from ".insn" encoding to instruction names. Using -mindirect-branch=thunk-extern and -mfunction-return=thunk-extern is an alternative, which comes with a need to generate all required expoline thunks manually. Unfortunately modules area is too far away from the kernel image, and expolines from the kernel image cannon be used. But since all new distributions (except Debian) build kernels for machine generations newer than z10, where "exrl" instruction is available, that leaves only 16 expolines thunks possible. Provide an option to build the kernel with -mindirect-branch=thunk-extern and -mfunction-return=thunk-extern for z10 or newer. This also requires to postlink expoline thunks into all modules explicitly. Currently modules already contain most expolines anyhow. s390: remove WARN_DYNAMIC_STACK s390 is the only architecture which allows to set the -mwarn-dynamicstack compile option. This however will also always generate a warning with system call stack randomization, which uses alloca to generate some random sized stack frame. On the other hand Linus just enabled "-Werror" by default with commit 3fe617ccafd6 ("Enable '-Werror' by default for all kernel builds"), which means compiles will always fail by default. So instead of playing once again whack-a-mole for something which is s390 specific, simply remove this option. This is requird for moving these syscalls away from the signal frame to the vdso. Note that this patch effectively disables CONFIG_COMPAT when using clang to compile the kernel. clang doesn't support 31 bit mode. We want to redirect sigreturn and restart_syscall to the vdso. s390: remove uncompressed kernel image build Dropping support for uncompressed kernel "image" build. Having both image and bzImage makes it complicated to add new code to an early boot phase (which is part of vmlinux for uncompressed kernel and a separate arch/s390/boot/compressed/vmlinux for bzImage). e.g. sclp_early_core.o is used for both, the decompressor phase and the main kernel. The fact of having uncompressed kernel "image" forces us to have a single object file and sacrifice instrumentation flags on such files (so that we could use them early). The story gets much more complicated with the need to utilize some of the string functions. With bzImage only support, we have 2 separate boot stages each built and linked separately, which allows to reuse some shared code, but recompile with appropriate flags. s390/vdso: revise CFI annotations of vDSO functions Revise and add CFI CFA and register rule annotations to the vDSO functions for proper stack unwinding and debugging. Because glibc might call the vDSO in special ways, the vDSO code does not rely on a stack frame created by the caller. The TOD clock value can be therefore not stored in the pre-allocated stack area and additional stack space is required. To correctly annotate these situations with CFI, the .cfi_val_offset directive is required to create relative offsets on the value of the stack register %r15. Because the .cfi_val_offset directive is available with recent GNU assembler versions only, additional checks are necessary. Note that if the vDSO is assembled with an older assembler version, stack unwinding and debugging from within the vDSO code might not be possible. s390/kernel: emit CFI data in .debug_frame and discard .eh_frame sections Using perf probe and libdw on kernel modules failed to find CFI data for symbols. The CFI data is stored in the .eh_frame section. The elfutils libdw is not able to extract the CFI data correctly, because the .eh_frame section requires "non-simple" relocations for kernel modules. The suggestion is to avoid these "non-simple" relocations by emitting the CFI data in the .debug_frame section. Let gcc emit respective directives by specifying the -fno-asynchronous-unwind-tables option. Using the .debug_frame section for CFI data, the .eh_frame section becomes unused and, thus, discard it for kernel and modules builds The vDSO requires the .eh_frame section and, hence, emit the CFI data in both, the .eh_frame and .debug_frame sections. s390/disassembler: generate opcode tables from text file The current way of adding new instructions to the opcode tables is painful and error prone. Therefore add, similar to binutils, a text file which contains all opcodes and the corresponding mnemonics and instruction formats. A small gen_opcode_table tool then generates a header file with the required enums and opcode table initializers at the prepare step of the kernel build. This way only a simple text file has to be maintained, which can be rather easily extended. Unlike before where there were plenty of opcode tables and a large switch statement to find the correct opcode table, there is now only one opcode table left which contains all instructions. A second opcode offset table now contains offsets within the opcode table to find instructions which have the same opcode prefix. In order to save space all 1-byte opcode instructions are grouped together at the end of the opcode table. This is also quite similar to like it was before. In addition also move and change code and definitions within the disassembler. As a side effect this reduces the size required for the code and opcode tables by ~1.5k. s390/facilities: add helper tool to generate facility lists Modifying the architecture level set facility lists was always very error prone. Given the numbering of the facility bits within the Principles of Operation, where the most significant bit number is 0, it happened a lot of times that wrong bits were set or cleared. Therefore this patch adds a tool "gen_facilities" which generates include/generated/facilites.h. The definition of the bits to be set is contained within arch/s390/include/asm/facilities_src.h and can be easily extended to e.g. also generate such lists for the KVM module. The generated file looks like this: #define FACILITIES_ALS _AC(0xc1006450f0040000,UL) #define FACILITIES_ALS_DWORDS 1 The facility bits defined in this patch match 1:1 to the current masks that can be found in head.S. kbuild: allow assignment to {A,C,LD}FLAGS_MODULE on the command line It is now possible to assign options to AS, CC and LD on the command line - which is only used when building modules. {A,C,LD}FLAGS_MODULE was all used both in the top-level Makefile in the arch makefiles, thus users had no way to specify additional options to AS, CC, LD when building modules without overriding the original value. Introduce a new set of variables KBUILD_{A,C,LD}FLAGS_MODULE that is used by arch specific files and free up {A,C,LD}FLAGS_MODULE so they can be assigned on the command line. All arch Makefiles that used the old variables has been updated. Note: Previously we had a MODFLAGS variable for both AS and CC. But in favour of consistency this was dropped. So in some cases arch Makefile has one assignmnet replaced by two assignmnets. Note2: MODFLAGS was not documented and is dropped without any notice. I do not expect much/any breakage from this. KVM: s390: arch backend for the kvm kernel module This patch contains the port of Qumranet's kvm kernel module to IBM zSeries (aka s390x, mainframe) architecture. It uses the mainframe's virtualization instruction SIE to run virtual machines with up to 64 virtual CPUs each. This port is only usable on 64bit host kernels, and can only run 64bit guest kernels. However, running 31bit applications in guest userspace is possible. The following source files are introduced by this patch arch/s390/kvm/kvm-s390.c similar to arch/x86/kvm/x86.c, this implements all arch callbacks for kvm. __vcpu_run calls back into sie64a to enter the guest machine context arch/s390/kvm/sie64a.S assembler function sie64a, which enters guest context via SIE, and switches world before and after that include/asm-s390/kvm_host.h contains all vital data structures needed to run virtual machines on the mainframe include/asm-s390/kvm.h defines kvm_regs and friends for user access to guest register content arch/s390/kvm/gaccess.h functions similar to uaccess to access guest memory arch/s390/kvm/kvm-s390.h header file for kvm-s390 internals, extended by later patches Acked-by: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Christian Borntraeger <borntraeger@de.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Heiko Carstens <heiko.carstens@de.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Carsten Otte <cotte@de.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Avi Kivity <avi@qumranet.com>

[S390] zfcpdump support. s390 machines provide hardware support for creating Linux dumps on SCSI disks. For creating a dump a special purpose dump Linux is used. The first 32 MB of memory are saved by the hardware before the dump Linux is booted. Via an SCLP interface, the saved memory can be accessed from Linux. This patch exports memory and registers of the crashed Linux to userspace via a debugfs file. For more information refer to Documentation/s390/zfcpdump.txt, which is included in this patch. [PATCH] s390_hypfs filesystem On zSeries machines there exists an interface which allows the operating system to retrieve LPAR hypervisor accounting data. For example, it is possible to get usage data for physical and virtual cpus. In order to provide this information to user space programs, I implemented a new virtual Linux file system named 's390_hypfs' using the Linux 2.6 libfs framework. The name 's390_hypfs' stands for 'S390 Hypervisor Filesystem'. All the accounting information is put into different virtual files which can be accessed from user space. All data is represented as ASCII strings. When the file system is mounted the accounting information is retrieved and a file system tree is created with the attribute files containing the cpu information. The content of the files remains unchanged until a new update is made. An update can be triggered from user space through writing 'something' into a special purpose update file. We create the following directory structure: <mount-point>/ update cpus/ <cpu-id> type mgmtime <cpu-id> ... hyp/ type systems/ <lpar-name> cpus/ <cpu-id> type mgmtime cputime onlinetime <cpu-id> ... <lpar-name> cpus/ ... - update: File to trigger update - cpus/: Directory for all physical cpus - cpus/<cpu-id>/: Directory for one physical cpu. - cpus/<cpu-id>/type: Type name of physical zSeries cpu. - cpus/<cpu-id>/mgmtime: Physical-LPAR-management time in microseconds. - hyp/: Directory for hypervisor information - hyp/type: Typ of hypervisor (currently only 'LPAR Hypervisor') - systems/: Directory for all LPARs - systems/<lpar-name>/: Directory for one LPAR. - systems/<lpar-name>/cpus/<cpu-id>/: Directory for the virtual cpus - systems/<lpar-name>/cpus/<cpu-id>/type: Typ of cpu. - systems/<lpar-name>/cpus/<cpu-id>/mgmtime: Accumulated number of microseconds during which a physical CPU was assigned to the logical cpu and the cpu time was consumed by the hypervisor and was not provided to the LPAR (LPAR overhead). - systems/<lpar-name>/cpus/<cpu-id>/cputime: Accumulated number of microseconds during which a physical CPU was assigned to the logical cpu and the cpu time was consumed by the LPAR. - systems/<lpar-name>/cpus/<cpu-id>/onlinetime: Accumulated number of microseconds during which the logical CPU has been online. As mount point for the filesystem /sys/hypervisor/s390 is created. The update process is triggered when writing 'something' into the 'update' file at the top level hypfs directory. You can do this e.g. with 'echo 1 > update'. During the update the whole directory structure is deleted and built up again. Linux-2.6.12-rc2 Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
