Unfortunately, some systems clear that bit 232 when a file is modified. Sendmail compensates by resetting the file mode 233 back to it's original settings. Unfortunately, there's still a 234 permission failure race as sendmail checks the permissions before locking 235 the file. This is unavoidable as sendmail must verify the file is safe 236 to open before opening it.
